Josie and the Pussycats Reviews

The dual performances by Alan Cumming and Parker Posey as music-industry archvillains are the comedic core of the movie.

| May 15, 2025

One of the best-written critiques of American consumerism and the commodification of nearly every aspect of daily life. It's a sweetly packaged, delightful romp through the music industry accompanied by an incredible soundtrack of original rock songs.

| Original Score: 5/5 | Jul 25, 2023

It’s They Live for the *NSYNC generation. It’s as clear-headed and sure-fired in its very, very exact critiques of how ridiculous product placement and ad over-saturation was getting at that time.

| Jun 25, 2022

Some interesting ideas and amusing moments get misplaced in a garish presentation dominated by monumentally moronic diversions.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Dec 4, 2021

It's a silly film, yes, but it also served as a critical commentary to the culture of the early aughts.

| Apr 11, 2019

Actually, it's the dialogue that's jerkin'. The script has a stilted feel, and its funny lines aren't really funny, so that the actors have to stand there and declaim them as if thereby officially designating them as funny.

Not a great movie, but it's a solid musical comedy with some guaranteed chuckles, a great cast, and an admirable wit.

| Jan 2, 2017

Movie rates itself out of an ideal audience.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 24, 2010

Ranks a 'one' next to Spinal Tap's '11'.

| Jul 16, 2010

The sour notes are all in a dumbed-down script, canned-ham performances that soon wear thin.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 7, 2008

This self-styled self-reflexive comedy asks the question, just how stupid are teenagers?

| Apr 18, 2007

This is one sharp pussycat.

Aaaaah, what a classic!

| Jun 24, 2006

Scratch this one off your must-see list.

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 1, 2004

Boasts a self-referential irreverence that gleefully attacks pop culture by using members of pop culture

| Original Score: 70/100 | Mar 11, 2004

Alan Cumming (who's picked up where Richard E. Grant left off in Spice World) seems to be doing an impression of Stewie, the megalomaniacal baby on Family Guy.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Aug 1, 2003

Once again the nostalgia of our youth has been strip-mined for a Hollywood remake . . . At least this one doesn't have any CGI talking-dog monstrosities in it

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 19, 2003

About as fresh and fun as week-old kitty litter.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Mar 13, 2003

The best praise I can offer is it could have been worse.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 8, 2003

Not necessarily the best film, those who remember the original series and have an interest in pop culture humor should find something in Josie to enjoy.
