Ladies in Lavender Reviews
While a bit slow moving the basis for the story was actually quite Devine! Actual movie critics don’t give this a good rating but I believe the writing, acting, and overall storyline was Fabulous! Yes, it moves along at a slower pace but it’s the Underlying story as well as the tremendous acting history that weaves an intriguing movie. I thought it was well created, had the acting power of 2 tremendous ladies, and a story of a bygone era we must not forget. IF you’re looking for something with a good story, a bit mysterious, an era of long ago war time, and woven brilliantly, then This Is the movie for you! It’s not the Marvel universe for sure, nor the 007 action pack, but a story of love for a talented human, sisters who love each other but are nothing alike, and set in the deep coastal countryside of long along England…. This IS the right movie to watch! Relax and enjoy!
I love this movie! It's a great story and Maggie Smith and Judi Dench are absolutely amazing. It's a joy to watch them. How they tried to speak German was so funny.
I very much enjoyed this film. The beauty of nature and community life in the English countryside shines through everything. Both Judi Dench and Maggie Smith are superb and enjoyable to watch. The violin music is lovely. Altogether, an engaging and pleasant watch.
I absolutely loved this movie. There is a message in it many people nowadays need to hear. There is a natural and unnatural way of things. Trying to manipulate nature and reality to fit an unnatural outcome could have horrendous consequences. In the end all the characters fall in place as they should and natural balanced is achieved. There is pain and sorrow in the human cycle of life but it all makes sense in the end when you are able to take a step back and embrace nature.
Beautifully filmed and touching. There are plot issues, but still very much worth the watch for the acting and scenery alone.
I tried watching this ages ago, but never got very far and now that I've seen the entire movie, I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy it the first time. It could be because I'm older now and the story finally resonated with me. But whatever the reason, I'm glad I gave it another try. This is a beautiful and heartwarming movie about two elderly sisters who find a badly injured young man (Andrea) washed up on the shore. They take him in and take care of him until he becomes part of their family. They learn that he is Polish, but they teach him how to converse in English and then discover that he has a wonderful talent for playing the violin. He meets a woman who is so impressed with his talent that she wants him to use it on a bigger level. The thing I liked most about this movie was the scenery (the seaside was gorgeous), but I absolutely loved Judi Dench. She was my favorite of the two sisters, and she had a sweetness and innocence about her. *spoiler* She develops feelings for Andrea and had it been done differently, it could have taken the movie in a completely different direction. However, the way it was presented was sweet and very subtle and led to a few touching moments I really loved this movie and I'm glad I gave it another try. It was definitely worth it.
A gentle movie. Slow but absorbing. If you like Maggie Smith and Judy Dench, then it is one to watch and with a glorious classical soundtrack as well.
Beautiful cinematography, wonderful score, great acting by all.
Awesome to have Judi Dench and Maggie Smith together! Loved it....
Lovely story and characters. Tender representation from well-known actors such as Judi Dench. They enabled us to feel like we were a part of this quaint English seaside village.
WONDERFUL FILM -- despite the horrible, gag-worth title and poster. Tbis is not a saccharine or "twee" film. My HUSBAND had seen this and kept trying to get me to watch it. Said it was one of the most charming -- and affecting-- films he'd seen. We LOVE Dench and Smith (I would watch either read the a grocery list) -- and this is a truly unique and affecting story about a woman who falls in love with a wounded soldier who "washes up" on their rural English doorstep and they decide to look after while he convalesces. We see far too few stories about people over 60...it's as if we don't exist -- and this one is rich and wonderful.
Lovely simple film. Some characters' backgrounds leave some unanswered questions, but the film is still sweet and poignant.
Perhaps overly deferential to underwhelming source material, Judie Dench is not given nearly enough time to show us the deep pain and loneliness of an old maid, everything is set as if to avoid engaging our deepest emotions.
Wonderful film, engaging from the first few minutes to the end. The Dames needed little direction I'm sure but Charles Dance directed with a sure but light touch .. have just seen it for the third time and loved it even more.
Maggie Smith & Judi Dench were wonderful in this movie, as was the makeup, the costuming, the cinematography, the locale. Ultimately, though, I didn't even finish it. It was just too boring. I didn't even see much of a plot, which a story should have, IMO.
