True story of the French film industry under the Nazi occupation. Long but never dull, with good dialogue and sharp characters. Also well cast and well paced. Kind of a gem. Four out of five.
One of the most overlooked foreign films of 00's, a juicy epic set during the Nazi occupation of France from the point of view of movie studios and how they operated during the war. Gripping, one of Tavernier's best.
Another of Tavernier's intrinsically detailed & fascinating studies, this time about French film-making during WWII.
J'adore les films de Tavernier, je suis une "Tavernière" convaincue !!! Gamblin est mortel dans ce rôle !!!
I liked this movie about French filmmakers during the WW2 occupation, trying to be true to their art while not getting in trouble with Nazi censors.
Tavernier and his actors reject simplification and create a beautiful collage portrait of humanity under pressure. Suspense and even action are there, but for me the main drama is found in the relationships between the characters.
