Last Chance Harvey Reviews

OMG this was a very bad movie. Tight lipped Dustin Hoffman trying to capture the heart of Emma Thompson's character. They had zero rapport. Lots of staring. Stupid time wasting scenes of going up and down stairs, down streets. Not one decent line in it. It was a dud.

4.0 stars; Just what you would expect when you take two excellent performances from top of the class actors (Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson), and a romantic script that was not soapy and cliche, but generated chemistry between two mismatched people. Dustin played a character who could have been a grown-up Benjamin Braddock from "The Graduate". He has nailed that character, which takes a great deal of underplaying the role. Emma is so versatile that she can play any character. In this case, she plays the most unlikely romantic opposite for Dustin.. Yet, she develops a chemistry with him that really works and makes the audience want their relationship to succeed. This was truly, Harvey's last chance in many, many ways. Dustin introduced some clever, yet subtle, comedy aspects to his role. In the end, it turned out to be a neat Romatic, Comedy, Drama.

This was really good. I'm a fan of Dustin Hoffman, and Emma Thompson, so it had some points right off the bat. There were some times when I felt like the movie didn't hit home runs where I was expecting it might. Some parts of the movie slowed, and it was hard for it to get back... I thought the scenes from the wedding reception were so good that I ended up giving this a star or two more than if those scenes hadn't been in the movie. It was pretty good... just not memorable.

Found this enjoyable love story on Kanopy. Wonderful acting and score. Once you accept the usual coincidences you can sit back and enjoy the touching moments. Work a look.

Last Chance Harvey is a terrific film. It is about a man who finds his romantic spirits lifted by a new woman in his life while in London for his daughter's wedding. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson give fantastic performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. Joel Hopkins did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama and romance. Last Chance Harvey is a must see.

Endearing romance film with two great leads and interesting characters. It was easy to root for and sympathize with them.

A very sweet feel good film.....no violence.....lots of redemption and second chances. Better this than Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.

I agree with the professional reviewers. This is not an Oscar level film but yet a story exploring the human trials and emotions with a rewarding romantic story.

Such a near-miss. For the first hour the acting of Thompson and Hoffman pretty much disguises the obviousness of the script, but eventually even they succumb to writer-director Joel Hopkins' gloopy and pedestrian twiddlings. And there's something queasy about septuagenarian Hoffman pursuing fiftyish Thompson, especially when she looks like she could pop him in her handbag.

I had never seen the movie Last Chance Harvey (2009) , starring Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman. The movie showed up on Hulu yesterday and since Emma Thompson is one of my favorites, so I decided to give it a shot . Last Chance Harvey is a very moving and charming romance between 2 lonely middle aged people thanks to the sublime performances from Mr. Hoffman and Miss Thompson, PLUS it's set in the city of London, which looks so beautiful.. if you've ever been to London, you'll want to revisit, if you haven't this film will make you want to go! And damn you Emma Thompson for making me cry!!! Check it out.. I think you'll enjoy it!

I so enjoyed this! The connection and learning to love again!

While there were elements of sweetness and sadness, I don't buy these two together at all. For two such great actors, the casting was bad. It wasn't natural at all. Frankly, I blame Dustin's weak performance. It may be the editing as well since the progression of this relationship, even in its suddenness, doesn't seem like right at all. The flow just isn't believable. As a result, it seems way over-dramatic. Even for a drama.

Hoffman and Thompson are wonderful in this charming and predictable affair.

It must be said that no-one can do soppy romantic comedy like the Brit's. They have this certain knack for injecting sarcasm into humour and almost poking fun at themselves while being serious. It is utterly confusing, but in essence quite entertaining. Well usually... Last Chance Harvey has tremendous potential with strong lead actors, great character development and intelligently targeting a new audience for the genre (the over 40's crowd). Distressingly though, it falls completely flat and wonders (literally) into the realm of mundane sentimentality. The film has a certain snore-fest, when-will-it-be-over feel to it. As a reviewer it can often get boring going to the movies alone, so I took my most chick-flick friendly mate with me and even he was begging for it to end. (Yes, I said he) Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) is an out-of-touch dinosaur nearing the end of his career composing jingles for television commercials. Unhappy with his performance, Harvey's superiors make it quite clear that if he doesn't land the big new account he will be cordially retired. Luckily for Harvey he receives this ultimatum on a Friday afternoon; the same day he is leaving for his daughter's wedding in London, and must fly from New York there and back by Monday for the meeting. No pressure. Kate Walker (Emma Thompson) is a mildly discontented airline survey manager leading a rather unremarkable life, busying her time reading trashy novels and answering incessant phone calls from her overbearingly meddlesome mother. Kate is as unlucky in love as she is in life, enduring a roundabout of bad blind dates. When Harvey arrives in London; tired and ill tempered, he is faced with even more challenges. After checking into the bridal party hotel he is informed he will be the only one there as his delightfully bitter ex-wife (Jane Lynch) has rented a house for all except him. The humiliation continues when he attends the rehearsal dinner with the electronic anti-theft tag still attached to his suit. All of this pails in comparison when bride-to-be daughter Maggie (Eileen Atkins) delivers the devastating news that she would like her step-father Brian (James Brolin) to give her away. After attending the ceremony Harvey makes a beeline for the airport in hopes of getting back to NY for his meeting. Needless to say Harvey didn't make his flight. Whilst drowning his sorrows in the airport bar, Harvey engages Kate in an argumentative competition where they compare notes on how much life can sting, he enthusiastically wins. Finding a connection in Kate's witty English banter, and having nowhere to really go, Harvey decides to follow Kate onto the tube and be her shadow for the remainder of the day. Harvey and Kate begin to soften their crusted interior and allow each other in; sharing their deep seeded issues they manage to find solace in their new friendship. In so, Kate encourages Harvey to return to the reception and becomes so preoccupied she begins to ignore the relentless ranting of her mother. Have they found their soul mate? Although the theory of two people over the age of forty falling in love under unlikely circumstances is a nice change from the Hugh Grant young and chirpy fluff pieces of the style, sadly this movie is just as ordinary and monotonous as it sounds. The film only occasionally hits the intended level of reflective insight but never captures the viewer's attention. Committing grievous offense with a ridiculous trying-on-clothes montage and the misunderstanding leading to break up and then make up clichés is entirely unforgivable. Harvey's connection to his daughter and their attempt at a heart-warming reuniting scene completely lacks emotion and integrity. Some scenes and concepts are nicely executed, Thompson is always a notable stand out and the mother's curiosity with the odd Polish neighbours BBQ habits is charming. That is about it. The verdict: There are a lot of words that could be used to describe this movie, Dull, boring, tedious, uninteresting etc. But as my movie companion so eloquently said to me when it was over, how do you spell tthhweptt (the lovely noise your mouth makes when you blow a raspberry)? I gave it one star because it was actually made into a film so I'm assuming at least, the cast and crew were paid; that's the only good reason for this piece of abysmally bad writing and lack of actor chemistry acting to have ever been made.

This was a very sweet film. I enjoyed the scenery of London. I like that it is not predictable.

Hoffman and Thompson have great chemistry and it feels like a Before Sunrise type film in terms of its long talking and walking through town shots.
