The Last Exorcism Reviews

Apr 5, 2025

Very good film. Some great creepy and gross scenes. In my opinion it fails miserably in the "found footage"/documentary style, as there is lots of editing and fake looking unfocused/zoom/shaky segments that look too odd and produced. Hate when movies have Pets being hurt tho, so it lost some points with me. The ending didn't quite make sense, not to spoil it, but I wondered how the footage was retrieved afterwards.

This movie is a complete waste of time. The plot is weak, the characters are one-dimensional, and it relies heavily on tired stereotypes. Small-town rural folks are portrayed as dim-witted caricatures, while ministers are painted as nothing more than fraudulent manipulators. It's not just offensive; it's lazy storytelling. Save your money and your time—there are better ways to spend an hour and a half

I always enjoy a good found-footage horror movie. This one was a lot of fun and had some good scares. The Evangelical angle was new and interesting, and the hoax misdirection was a unique lead. This felt reasonably original in what is a pretty narrow subgenre.

It was OK, good to see Crowe again, but a little strange and disheveled; worth seeing but not one of your great plots. The problem is its not a great story line and pretty predictable.

Solid found footage possession is no Exorcist but offers plenty of rewards for horror fans; a twisty, engrossing tale; lots of effective set pieces. Overall: recommended

Good movie I think it's really something that could be true. The entire movie seems like it could actually be real. I know I'm repeating myself but it's really good.

A pastor regrets scamming the faithful and decides to do one final "exorcism" with a film crew present to document the chicanery. This last feat will test his lack of faith. I'm not generally a fan of found footage films but this is one of the exceptions. I was reminded of Marjo Gortner, who also brought in a film crew to document how he and his family were scamming believers before he left the faith. There are some scary moments and pay attention to the early part of the film with Marcus preaching. And I'm sure it's no coincidence Cotton Marcus is so similar to Cotton Mather.

Good movie about a fake preacher who finds himself

Rating: 8/10. 80/100. | The acting in this is so realistic to me for some reason. This is one of its shinning attributes.
Also, this is in the top 10 or even top 5 Found Footage films of all time.

Maybe it's because I didn't really like The Blair Witch Project all that much meaning that this was unlikely to win me over but man, did The Last Exorcism fail to impress me. The premise is interesting enough, I suppose and I guess the acting okay but I just thought the film was boring and forgettable. That's probably the point given that the film does deal with exorcism and demonic possessions being myths but surely, the execution could've been better. I reckon that the ending is the most memorable sequence due to delivering what its alleged target audience wants but also suffers from being poorly foreshadowed and occurring rather abruptly. It doesn't help that it ends up forcing the film to take a side with the "Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane" trope. Some praise this film for trying to do something different from other films of its ilk but all I see is just another found-footage film that would not have existed without Paranormal Activity and one that I think whose scepticism-themed narrative could just as easily have been told in a traditional, third-person narrative seeing how the gimmick did nothing for me to enhance the narrative like what Cloverfield did.

Rubbish! I just watched it being number 1 in the box office.

It is well written and is scary with lots of atmosphere. The sound design is especially great. But, there are simply too many horror ‘documentaries' that came out around this time and this makes it forgettable. Plus the ending is an anticlimax.

Despite having not much in the way of special effects, this movie delivers in unusual ways. There is an unique plot, long building suspense, and a found footage genre that actually works.

Gripping and enjoyable, just nice to see a decent horror movie finally

I love cheesy horror, and man is this great! If viewed from the Proper perspective this movie is hilarious. If you're stuck in bed and you've made your way through all the awesome stuff on Shudder... and you can find it streaming free then this is definitely worth a watch. But don't go out of your way to see it.

Out of the plethora of found footage horror, The Last Exorcism is one of the better ones as it provides a solid set up with a charismatic lead in Patrick Fabian. Despite being a found footage horror film about an exorcism, the film's premise is actually quite original. Although it isn't a spoiler, I'd rather not go into what that premise is in case you want to go into the film knowing nothing which may be the best way to view it. I respect horror films, especially found footage horror films, that don't rely on jump scares and, luckily, this film kept the jump scares to a minimum. Instead the film uses the Deep South, Louisiana, small town atmosphere to provide eerie ambiance. Nathan Barr's guitar strung score was well matched with the film's setting. I really only have two major criticisms. One of them being how overly produced the film felt with the music, editing, and camera movements. If you watch the entire film then you will understand how illogical it is for the film to be as well produced and constructed as it is. That aspect definitely took me out of it a bit. Now, you can start to get into the "well, what if..." scenarios but then you're just making excuses for the film. There is also some noticeable voice dubbing at a certain point in the film where it clearly isn't the actors talking in real time; again, another aspect that took me out of the film. I understand that sometimes you have to stretch your imagination to enjoy films like this, which trust me I did, but it can only get away with so much. Other than that, I was really entertained and genuinely frightened by some of the creepy moments in this film. If you are a fan of found footage, which I consider myself to be, then I definitely recommend this film. If you aren't a fan of found footage horror then I can see some of the criticisms that I mentioned getting under your skin. However, I would still give it a shot. It is only 87 minutes and, who knows, you might actually enjoy it!
