Last Man Standing Reviews
Top action movie, watched 20+ times
Story is pure copy of film a few dollars more but is has great action and modern atmosphere from begging of 20th century
A highly americanized, neo-noir version of the classic cinematic tales told by masters Akira Kurosawa in Yojimbo and Sergio Leone in A Fistful Of Dollars, this time taking place in 1920s prohibition era Texas. This movie pumps up the action and lead to a crisp, which gets comical and very out of tone in some parts. The characterization of it's protagonist is confusing, as it's the story itself: for around the 25 minute mark, the plot becomes borderline incomprehensible and i could only get back at understanding what was happening around the 60-70 minute mark on this 100 minute movie. However, for as bad as the 2nd act is, the 1st and 3rd act make it up with awesome acting by Bruce Willis as the protagonist and Christopher Walken as his rival; enjoyable, worthwhile action, alongside great effects and production design that both aged really well. And nevertheless, the 2nd act, again, for as bad as it is, still is nowhere near boring, and, as they say: "I would have bad than boring".
I actually love this movie, but I want it to qualify for our podcast by hitting 50% and then I'll change my score to the highest possible. This movie is amazing.
A copy and paste plot of a Few Dollars More and mediocre acting from a cast that I expected more from.
This is a highly watchable Western-Gangster film with a stellar cast and a gritty feel. This film is adapted from an Akira Kurosawa film, and Directed by the great Walter Hill, so you know it's filled with action and violence. Bruce Willis makes the mistake, and life altering decision, to pass through a dangerous Texas town on his way to Mexico. He immediately becomes embroiled in a gang war between two rival factions, and focuses on saving a distressed young woman looking to escape from one of the gangs. This is one of Willis's best. He is calm, cool, and deadly as Smith. This actually got better with age.
For me, an action movie needs to be believable. Many of those gun-fighting scenes were simply not believable. I don't understand why directors go to such ridiculous extremes that IMO ruin a movie.
Love this Movie!!! Personally, I'm a fan of Directors who can recycle old source material and make it feel fresh and up to date. First and Foremost, This movie wasn't made for overly critical, pretentious for no reason, Keyboard Warrior-type Wannabe Film Buffs. This is pure unadulterated, Do Unto others before they do unto You, Gritty, Masculine Entertainment. 100% Fun !!! Nothing more. Nothing less. Not to mention, We get 1990's Bruce Willis at the Highlight of his career, perfectly paired (Like Steak & Eggs) with a No Nonsense, Super Villainy, Tommy Gun wielding Christopher Walken, Gift wrapped & Hand Delivered via Lone Wolf Productions. The Last Man Standing Is a credited Adaptation of both Yojimbo & A Fist Full of Dollars with a Walter Hill twist. When are people gonna stop fronting on my boy Walter. We all know that the man almost always delivers when it comes down to cooking up Action Man Films and With The Last Man Standing we're served with a well proportioned Buffet of Prohibition Era, Gangster meets Western, Tough Talking "Lone Wolf" Gun-Slinger for Hire, Shoot Em' Up Cinema. The film is both stylish & Captivating along with Great Dialogue, A+ Acting and Double Brandishing Colt .45 1911 Slow-Mo Gunplay. In the wise words of my Cuban brother Manolo from Scarface "Que mas Carne ni mas Carne, Asi viene el Sandwich Mang!!!" In other words, What more could we ask for??? 5 out of 5. Easy!!!
Lots of unbelievable gun fights with unlimited bullets. This is an enjoyable, violent action flick to watch when you're looking to shut off your brain for a short while. Bruce Willis is in his prime, and Christopher Walken never disappoints.
I had a fun time, with decent action. It does kind of get strange at the end of the second act and feels forced, but with enough suspension of disbelief, it's fine.
Shameless ripoff that captures none of the originals charm.
If I could give it a negative star I would. The overtly political tone is so awful. You cant have a sitcom without making it divisive? Despicable. Shame on ypu
just watched this movie today, its bin over 10years since i have even thought of this movie, and you can tell that max payne did take ideas from this movie and put it into the video games
Awful film - a witless hotch potch of other film. When I was younger a gave up dreams of being an artist when I realised my hands were not skilled enough to transfer what was in my head onto canvas, Walter Hill should have done the same. It's almost as if someone had a bag of ideas; gangster flick, spaghetti western, shootem-up video game and tossed them up into the air and made the resulting confused mess as a joke. There is not a single redeeming thing about the film, except maybe Christopher Walken who appeared truly deranged .. then again so would I if I'd found myself in this garbage.
Powerful and intense. unusual setting and story line. more believable character than "die hard" roles.
As an old school action movie, it's perfect. Guns that never run dry. Monosyllabic protagonist. Big bad guy who's not as scary as his number two. All things that make up a fun soda and popcorn movie. Willis is good as the new "Man with No Name". Christopher Walken is just as villainous as you always wanted him to be. Bruce Dern adds a little flavor as the inept sheriff. And the shootouts are great. However, for those how absolutely must compare it to the original and it's original reimagining (Yojimbo and Fistful of Dollars), no it's not as good. This doesn't have any of the sweeping landscapes and beautiful cinematography as Sergio Leon's masterful Dollars Trilogy (however it also doesn't have that irritating kid crying and yelling "Mama" either). So if you want an artful masterpiece that's slower and has less action, watch Fistful of Dollars (better than Yojimbo, in my opinion). But, if you want a straight forward action story with gangsters and Tommy guns, watch this.
I love this movie! Always loved Bruce Willis, and this hard boiled western/detective/gangster movie is the perfect vehicle.
