Last Men in Aleppo Reviews

Apr 4, 2025

Awful. The movie? Oh that was pretty good. However after watching that movie you aren't thinking about the movie. You are thinking about how completely psychotic people treat each other.

Full review on my blog max4movies: De sidste mænd i Aleppo (international title: Last Men in Aleppo) is a documentary about the White Helmets, a voluntary nonprofessional organization in Syria that has been helping people after bomb attacks since the civil war started in 2013. The documentary features footage that was shot between 2013 and 2017 and mostly focuses on three young men and their dilemma whether to stay or leave Aleppo. There is few information provided and no additional material was used (like interviews or external media coverage), which is why the documentary feels authentic but also raw. The conflict in Syria is a contemporary geopolitical crisis and, thus, the documentary is topical, important, and although few scenes actually contain graphic violence or gore, the catastrophe feels personal and heart-breaking. Although there are some technical drawbacks (e.g., structure and editing), the subject matter is simply too important to disregard.

If you are like me, you went numb to the reports of tragedy and atrocity pouring out of Syria. Based on the paucity of news reports about the ongoing conflict in the western press, it appears the whole nation has gone numb. Watching Last Men in Aleppo brought back my outrage at the endured by the Syrian people as a result of indiscriminate bombing by government forces. The documentary follows the White Helmets, a beleaguered volunteer search-and-rescue organization operating in the besieged city of Aleppo, acting as a last vestige of the fire and medical services available to citizens in a functioning country. Beyond showing the organization's work, Last Men in Aleppo depicts the personal lives of some of its members as they attempt to live normal lives in an extremely tenuous situation. This is part of the genius of the documentary - were it to focus exclusively on the rescue efforts performed by these brave individuals, the film would be a parade of collapsed buildings and broken bodies, potentially having a numbing effect. But by devoting significant screen time to the volunteers' families and even depicting a few genuinely heartwarming moments, the film puts a face to the tragedy. Last Men in Aleppo is a call to action, a call to put international pressure on the Syrian government to end indiscriminate bombings and targeting of civilians, and an extremely effective one at that. While the time when that was a viable option likely already passed, it is still a fantastic documentary for putting a face to a distant war.

As a document in the traditional sense, it has its value in recording what it feels like to be in a bombarded city working essentially as a paramedic, however unqualified - beyond that it is dull and repetitive and devoid of narrative drive, leaving the viewer with far too many reservations about the purpose of the piece (one doesn't have to be a supporter of the existing regime to ponder who the main characters really support in their fight against Assad), essentially draining it of political meaning and simply giving us the tired old insight "war is a terrible thing".

It's okay to feel weak sometimes. Salute to all these heroes.

6/16/18 Netflix Interesting to read audience reviews where some look at the White Helmets as unselfish angels of mercy wiling to rescue civilians at the cost of their own life while others look at them as ruthless terrorist with this as their propaganda vehicle. What I saw were people trying to do ordinary things under extraordinary circumstances. Build a pet fish pond, play in the sunshine, attend a wedding, love and protect their children and cherish the friendships that develop under trying times. It is an amazing story of people staying and trying to live a normal life in such a hellish place.

I think this movie is a must see.

Visually stunning but we don't get to hear from the participants except when they're talking to each other, and they don't tell each other enough to give this story a point of view beyond the rubble.

It's heartbreaking. When the Syrian Civil War broke out, there was a push to have a UN no-fly zone and prosecute war crimes. But Republicans, Democrats, the world altogether didn't care because Syria didn't have oil or anything of value. Every time a Republican wags their finger about Iran or a Democrat whines about Russia or a foreign bureaucrat prattles on about the Palestinians, I roll my eyes. They all have blood on their hands.

Propaganda movie literally created by terrorists. The white helmets are a fake rescue group that only operate in terrorist held areas. There is finally peace now in Aleppo because the rebels / terrorists have left.

This is one of the worst propaganda movies of our century. Some critics call this objective but I don't know if they even remotely understand the political situation in syria today or if they just want to push their own agenda. Please research the white helmets after watching this so called documentary and form your own opinion.

I can't say I enjoyed this film and I certainly never want to see it again but watching it was necessary. It's brutal and devastating and is a very personal account of the Syrian Civil War.

This and the documentary White Helmets are excellent.

not that interesting

Lack if authenticity. As original Aleppo Citizen, i can assure that the reality is far away from this documentary. This film is a beautiful propaganda for the islamist factions that ruled Aleppo by terror for 5 years.

Early intensely moving scene and the no doubt extraordinary event and people doesn't mask the slight meandering of focus.

White Helmets are terrorists who filmed themselves beheading a 12 year old boy.

Mar 2, 2018

These inspiring, righteous men are amateurs who do not seek heroism or recognition for what it is they valiantly do. They are angels whose white helmets shine through the dense, suffocating dust and crumbling rubble of a war-torn city hoping to preserve a place they once knew for the next generation. It's repetitious, yes, but that is its reality. An unforgiving onslaught of good versus evil that may never writes its final chapter.

This one about the White Helmets in Syria reminded me of a documentary short from a few years ago... Kinda ponderous and slow.
