Leatherface Reviews

Manages to bring in the extremely unpleasant, unrelenting energy of the New French Extremity horror movement into the United States mostly intact.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jun 1, 2022

For all the buildup for the big reveal, the ending of Leatherface makes little sense and isn't terribly satisfying, for hardcore fans or otherwise.

| Original Score: 4/10 | Oct 4, 2019

Most egregiously, it attempts to chart a rational evolution of an incomprehensible monster.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 20, 2019

What's best is that beneath the horror are questions of identity. The origins of the character are changed, just a touch. The core remains the same. The saw's still family.

| Original Score: 4/5 | May 1, 2019

The plot is strangely muddled. It works out in the end, but you'll definitely be questioning whether you're watching the right movie for at least 30 minutes.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 10, 2019

The blood and guts flow freely in Leatherface but it's never even remotely horrific, let alone so absurdly shocking that's it provides sick thrills.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Oct 31, 2018

Horrible horror prequel has bloody violence, gore.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Oct 3, 2018

Leatherface is one more of the bunch, it does not mark the way to anything new, but it shows us that Hollywood ran out of ideas for quite some time and is willing to recycle whatever it is. [Full Review in Spanish]

| Original Score: 6/10 | Aug 29, 2018

An ill-advised prequel to 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre...

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Apr 16, 2018

While devoted TCM fans will swallow down Leatherface out of loyalty, there's little here suggesting the radical reinvention of the series one might've had distant hopes for.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 19, 2018

The screenwriter for Leatherface, Seth M. Sherwood, has some explaining to do. After all, it doesn't seem likely that one little betrayal from an otherwise kind nurse could turn Jackson into Leatherface. It really doesn't make sense.

| Mar 2, 2018

Leatherface bares little resemblance to what inspired it and while the intention to be different was certainly there, the story was not and fans will likely forget it as soon as the credits roll.

| Original Score: 4/10 | Jan 17, 2018

It's pointless, it's tedious, it's dull, and worst of all, it's lazy.

| Oct 30, 2017

Overall, Leatherface feels fresh and different from your standard horror slashers. It's an origin story that's compelling and its own entity.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Oct 27, 2017

Leatherface ... falls squarely in the tradition of a series that's failed, movie after movie, to recapture the raw, reptilian power of its first entry.

| Original Score: D | Oct 23, 2017

... features the requisite technical grit, yet lacks enough gore for genre aficionados and series completists - likely the only folks who will bother.

| Oct 21, 2017

Seth M. Sherwood's script totally misses the point that keeps the original Massacre so bloody effective.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Oct 20, 2017

Sadly, the makers of Leatherface didn't put enough thought into a sleepy story that could easily be titled 'I Was a Teenage Leatherface.'

| Original Score: 1/4 | Oct 20, 2017

Ultimately, Leatherface can't really stand on its own, but it hardly needs to.

| Oct 20, 2017

Obviously, the lesson that will be gleaned from all this will be an origin story of Jaws.

| Original Score: 1/10 | Oct 20, 2017
