Letters From Iwo Jima Reviews
This may be the best war movie ever made.
I know this movie gonna be sad but didn't expect it to be so sad. It's like i can feel the atmosphere in the film
This was such a great movie, I love how human the characters feel! It does a really good job of letting you see and feel the mindset of a young overwhelmed Japanese soldier just trying to survive while also keeping his pride! Would highly recommend it to anyone interested in WW2 in the Pacific!
Absolutely amazing film - depicts the horrors of war and humanist moments in it from Japanese perspective, demonstrating the evilness and futility of war.
Great movie about the Japanese perspective of Battle of Iwo Jima. A little slow paced but really shows the humanity of Japanese soldiers but also the devotion to Emperor and Country.
The companion piece to Flags Of Our Fathers, this far superior movie is a poignant and thought provoking look at the brutality of war. One of the best WWII movies to be made.

An All Time Classic. The acting is phenomenal across the board with no soldiers story ever feeling generic or repetitive. And despite hardly any English spoken you are able to connect with each of them. The music is so simple but super memorable and moving. The cinematography is excellent. The only real somewhat shotty part is the CGI with the landing otherwise everything is phenomenal. Especially the use of shadows and lighting which really drives home the effect of watching memories rather than being there in the battle. The editing is jumpy between all the different stories but it works very well and has phenomenal pacing. I was surprised how this breaks up the action with telling the stories in between and it never felt out of place but flowed beautifully and filled with meaning and showed the humanity to the Japanese in as bleak a situation as you can get. Despite being jumpy it is absolutely worth it to show the human side to an audience who has never seen that and get past the conditioning of always seeing the Allied side. Everyone should see this once.
War is hell and this film shows it :(
The first half of this movie is 5 stars. The character building, the world building, the acting, the script, shot brilliantly, the sheer amount of insight into the things surrounding war. First half of this movie is pretty much a perfect movie. The second half turns a bit more generic war movie. Still a good war movie, with occasional scenes that are reminiscent of the first half, but man did I just want more of that first half.
The quintessential Pacific War film. Clint Eastwood masterfully tells this war story from the Japanese perspective, in a way that leaves even the most stone of heart full of empathy and sadness for our protagonists.
Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Lovely story, which I especially loved how it was all taken from the japenese point of view. Great acting along with it to make it a worthwhile watch
Story was fantastic and the characters all had great emotional depth, however, the film gets very predictable at parts. "Letters From Iwo Jima" stands as one of the more unique war movies of our time, providing a look at WW2 from the perspective of the Japanese (from the lens of an American director?). Watanabe is fantastic as always, though Ninomiya and Kase also did fairly well. The entire atmosphere of the film is very grim, and it's pretty easy to notice through the colors the lens emphasizes on. The action was also done pretty entertainingly, though it could have been improved on in some areas. The film does tend to get a bit predictable at parts, however, and it tends to fall into many clich¨¦s that other war movies bring with them. Still, though, I ended up really liking this film and thought that it stood as one of Eastwood's better films to this day.
I was hoping it would entertain me as much as 'Flags of Our Fathers' had - and I'm pleased to say it did! I'd say that aforementioned release pips this companion piece, but the difference in quality is virtually indistinguishable - both are very good films. Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya and Ryo Kase all give excellent performances, I enjoyed that trio throughout 'Letters from Iwo Jima'. It's really cool to see the Japanese point of view of the Battle of Iwo Jima, having previously seen the American view last time out. It's also pleasing that the film portrays this side of the story correctly and tells the tale in Japanese, despite being an all-American production. The film reportedly did well in Japan, which I guess confirms that it did a respectable job.
I'd recommend all movies directed by Clint Eastwood. They are thought-provoking. They are a reflection of our own humanity. They are memorable. You need to see the kamikaze mentality required of Japanese soldiers in WWII.
Arguably the greatest war movie you will ever see.
