Lonely Hearts Reviews

Dec 8, 2024

I think the film itself has to thank some superb performances by the all star cast, Salma Hayek stole the show with her menacing portrayal. John Travolta and James Gandolfini had some terrific chemistry. If you can overlook some of the holes in the script writing than this is worth a watch. I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would.

It's ok, but it's also "meh!". You know what I mean

Sets and costumes were great, but the movie wasn't. I found the directing style difficult to watch with those rapid fire camera shots, even in calm scenes. Also there was no sense of mystery or intrigue to the story... it was all on the nose. Though I may have missed something because I got bored and skipped ahead.

What a mess. Some dynamite supporting performances and an immaculate cast, but wow, the attempt to weave storylines together failed miserably into incoherence, and while there are moments of brilliance (from the cast), it's so poorly directed that they never come together as a story. Case in point- Scott Caan is not a great actor, but neither is he a poor one. His character, though, is a cartoon, and I'm sure he did the best he could with it. Come on, young cop mocking a superior officer by cracking wise about his wife's suicide? WTF, seriously? I found this on a list of movies you may have missed kind of article, and I wish I'd kept it that way. Film is a director's medium, and this guy wasted everybody's time and talent.

Type of Bonnie & Clyde taking advantage of lonely hearts.

A little disjointed. A little overwrought. A little waste of time.

Well, it's like this. Gandolfini had a better script than Travolta. Gandolfini did a lighter version of his mafia capo thing but made it into a cop. John T was there, but he kind of phoned this one in. He was doing the dour disappointed guy routine, but it lacked the real emotion he should carry. I like Leto as an actor just a little bit, not much more than a minor role amount. Salma Hayek in the movie was convincing insane because I used to date a girl like her. Laura Dern had a passable performance. I like Scott Caan a lot because he's not a leading man, he's walking in his father's giant footsteps, and Scott really tries his best to be good at his craft even though he seems to be almost the same actor in everything. Many of the camera angles on period settings were very good, and kudos to the lighting people. They did great. I like movies that don't move at Transformer speed, have a slower pace, and sometimes try your patience. This one did that. The team of Gandolfini and Travolta moved steadily towards their mark throughout the film. I never lost sight of the target, and for me, the film stayed on point. If you want a period cop movie with some black and white and 1940s this one is okay to spend your time with.

_Lonely Hearts_ has no esoteric dream sequences, no flashbacks or flashforwards, no dizzying hand held camera work--and that's one reason I liked it. So many filmmakers try to dazzle us with their fancy tricks. But I appreciated this film's straightforward approach. The subject matter, based on a true story circa 1949, is certainly unpleasant, and the two criminals, played by Jared Leto and Salma Hayek, are absolutely despicable. But the nastiness is offset by the two good cops who lead the investigation, played by John Travolta and James Gandolfini. Both turn in compelling performances. The story, which is largely police procedural with a couple of sub plots, is simple: Two evil people commit heinous crimes, and the cops finally get them. It's rather reminiscent of Bonnie and Clyde. We were kind of interested in Bonnie and Clyde as characters, but we didn't like them and we hoped they would pay for their sins. Same thing here. I have mixed feelings about capital punishment, but I must admit I felt vindicated watching these two scumbags fry at the end. I also understood why Travolta's character quit the cops when it was all over. He had simply had enough. I don't know why some critics didn't like this film. It tells a compelling story very well, with top notch acting and direction. To me, that makes a good movie.

Stop! Before you waste 2 hours watching this, go watch 1969's The Honeymoon Killers, directed by Leonard Kastle.

Intriguing but forgettable.

Really interesting concept, but some of the characters (particularly the cops) were underdeveloped. Hayek and Leto are fantastic and the film is most interesting when they’re on screen

The movie started off a bit slow but oh man did the second half impress me. Jared Leto and the rest of the cast were fantastic and it told a unique story that I’ve definitely never seen before. 5/5

It's a very good movie with very good actors as Alice Krige, Laura Dern or John Travolta.

Story background of a villain couple in disguise of brother and sister was a bit similar to the movie Crimson Peak.

Good film although took me a while to start to get interested and understand what was happening

An enjoyable watch. Some ridiculous moments, but solid throughout. Note: The actual woman is almost the exact opposite of Salma Hayek. Using someone a bit more realistic would've made a big difference.

very confusing beginning. I still do not know who the woman who shot herself in the head and fell into the tub was. The acting at times seemed unconvincing, especially the banter and the arguments between Travolta and Gandolfini. On the other hand, Hayek and Leto are outstanding. Whenever the story turns to detective Robinson' petsonal problems I felt impatient, wanting more of the evil pair. Suspension of disbelief when Hayek and Leto are onscreen. Irritation and disbelief when Travolta and Gandolfini...

good period drama gr8 cast

Noir premises, an honest but not so inspired depiction: fact is, you never tremble in horror, nor in love, nor in awe. Not bad, but too much detached from its lonely heart.
