Machine Gun Preacher Reviews
Maybe not what you want to see from your comfortable first world armchair, but an excellent depiction of the horror of child soldiers and terrorism in Africa. We who live here know what lurks beneath the surface.
Absolutely makes no sense whether the reviewers would give us a low star. Real, humane, genuine. Best I've seen in a while.
Watch from beginning to end. Gerard Butler is amazing. The message to help these children needs to be heard by all through this truly inspiring film.
I don't understand these scores. This movie is great, truly great. It's not a "Christian" movie… yes the main character finds god and religion becomes a focal point of his life, but this movie is about redemption, sacrifice, horror, struggle, sadness, joy, friendship… I could go on. Gerard Butler is great, and yes if you know the history of the reality in Sudan, the details of what is going on exactly, there are certainly plenty of holes to poke in the story. It is an action movie at times after all… but that's not the point. This isn't a history lesson, and regardless the fact is there are countless atrocities taking place in that part of the world and this movie certainly puts that front and center. Get if your high horses, what do you watch movies for? To be disappointed and not like them? Take a deep breath, not every movie is an Oscar winner, but that doesn't mean they can't be enjoyable and thought provoking, both of which this one is.
The movie itself is decent....the story...everyone loves a based on a true story....Let me say I LOVE Gerard Butlèr...for his looks...not because I think he's a great actor...300 & PS I love you ɓeing his best work....but the ting with this movie...he just does not pull off the Grice or acent necessary...you can tell he has never spent any time in the south & he can not pull it off....he's got the look...but when he speaks on camara...he doesn't do what this character needs
Tells the true story of Sam Childers, a common criminal who found God and went on to do amazing things. While liberties were taken for the movie (of course), it is extremely well done and really shows the impact one person can have. One of the (extremely) few movies that doesn't use the Hollywood template for Christians (evil and/or dumb). Very inspiring!
Not much resonates besides facing the emotionally hard-hitting fronts and feeling the tense thrills as formulaically typical in the action sequences rather additionally branching to the involved facts being more than just grave stakes. Same goes for factual awareness as the story does deliver awareness over dreadful events occurring overseas and we see how a savior progressively builds akin to the narratives between "Schindler's List" and "Hotel Rwanda" in paying respectful tribute in the blessed heroism whilst being challenged. For any attention-grabbing reason would stem from the basic storyline and Gerard Butler's reputable stardom as he usually comes with grips on values amidst moral evolution, part of the fine casting to boost the factual characterization. While some dialogue should've been thought better as uncertainty been sensed upon their momentary delivery, the film's tense, humbly respectful and hard-hitting with a nice cast performing well, proven to be a decent dramatization being successfully delivered as factual presentation that serves to broaden the acknowledgement campaigning for more awareness. Too religious for my taste but the story is really interesting.
This film is a fairly standard action film, only with a moral angle to it and I felt a bit torn about how sincere it was, or wanted to be viewed. I have nothing against the main character, played by Gerard Butler, he certainly seems to have his heart in the right place and it was, if anything, I suppose, reassuring to see someone with a chequered past care so much about the children forced to be in the middle of a violent/bloody conflict in Africa but I couldn't help but feel that somehow it still was a bit disingenuous. Of course I must mention that its based on a true story, that of Sam Childers, who was a former armed drug dealer in America and who became religious and ended up in Africa wanting to protect the kids, which is a nice story I suppose. I guess it comes down to the age old saying 'truth is stranger than fiction' but then also the saying, as noted (I beloeve) in the Bible 'No one is beyond redemption' also applies. Its an optimistic and nice message, sure enough and the film is certainly watchable - a fairly gripping watch at times and entertaining but the dichotomy between the scenes set in church with sermons being spoken and the bloody action/war/violence scenes, it felt a little uncomfortable I suppose. Thats not to say I don't give money to charity, generally at certain times of the year and after natural disasters and the like but it just felt perhaps a little uncomfortable viewing - a bit tacky somehow, even though its an important story to be told and its an important message. Butler does give a particularly good portrayal as Sam Childers, coming across as passionate about the Sudanese. Michelle Monaghan also does a good job portraying his wife, Lynn. Its a good film, an interesting story and its worth seeing but if the story doesn't appeal then, obviously, it wouldn't be for you - i.e. if you think organised religion is a complete con or if you believe that we in the west should stay out of the issues in other continents (i.e. Africa) and that sort of thing then this won't be for you but that sort of thing aside, its a good watch. A thought provoking film I'd somewhat cautiously recommend, yes.
It's a very good movie, Machine Gun Preacher, 2011 directed by a German-Swiss filmmaker, Marc Forster with script by an American, Jason Keller... The story is based on a "Another Man's War" is a 2009 book written by Sam Childers... Michelle Monaghan portrays great and Gerard Butler also well done... Besides, any volunteers over South Sudan should take all my credits...
The Hollywood aspects are entertaining and I was amazed by the true story. I'm not religious but I appreciate that this 2011 movie wouldn't be made in this godless 2022; so I was not offended by the preacher scenes, instead I was inspired. Great acting by everyone.
A pretty generic and bland action movie with some interesting emotional depth. Unfortunately much of the story is so incredibly cliché it ends up being a rather boring film to watch.
So this is a surprisingly good movie. It tells the true story of an Ex Con who finds God, turns his life around, builds a church, and becomes a missionary in a war zone in Africa. The movie is a hard R with sex, language, drugs, and violence. But it is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. We see a man and his wife fight to save their marriage. We see a man fighting to save children including picking up a gun and killing to do it. It is a reminder that some are sheep for God and others are lions. Overall a very good movie, we good acting, and a powerful story.
I really enjoyed it! It reminds me of my early days in the church. A friend told me about it and I have watched it 3 times over the past few years. I need to tell others about it.
These movies, based in reality, are necessary!!! The world needs movies like this. I dare People watch this one, knowing it is a real story, and don t like it. It is impossible.
This is a powerful story of a man's evolution from hell raiser to servant. Listen, if you're looking for an Oscar film, this is not it...but if youre looking for heart and inspiration, you've got it right here. No big budget, no fancy special effects...but a damned good story told in a budget with some darn good actors. Passion project? Gerard Butler is a producer on top of starring.
One of my all time favorite films. It is graphic, but it's also based on a true story of one of GOD'S chosen and redeemed children going on to serve as he is where GOD needs him to. This movie inspired me to watch some of Sam Childer's sermons, and I have to say the few I have seen are amazing. This is one I must keep in my physical collection, though it most certainly is not for children. I would liken it to in terms of graphic content to Tears of the Sun, but this is what real life can look like. Looking into the Lost Boys, and the attrocities committed at the hands of the L.r.a. in Sudan will make your blood boil and thank THE LORD for men like Sam Childers.
