Magic in the Moonlight Reviews

Magic in the Moonlight had some potential but gets lost in the middle and was never able to fully recover. Despite those scripting issues, the camera work is impeccable and the performances are endearing.

| Original Score: B | Aug 19, 2024

I found myself happily wrapped up in its setting, its humor, and its simplicity.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 23, 2022

Magic in the Moonlight is a modestly romantic trifle. It’s concerned with location, location, location, and not much else.

Woody Allen's 46th film remains with you after the credits have rolled.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | May 18, 2021

Allen's new film is largely stillborn. With more sadness than anger, one has to report that Magic in the Moonlight is largely devoid of wit, charm or "magic" of any kind.

Despite tackling some of life's big questions this one feels like a trifle.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 1, 2021

I liked Magic in the Moonlight on a superficial level and nothing beyond that.

By the time its denouement arrives, the lack of context and development make me forget that I was watching a movie with some discernment. [Full review in Spanish]

Classic romanticism told with the whimsical humor that is Woody Allen.

| Dec 14, 2019

A surprisingly uncharismatic and uninvolving recapitulation of the kinds of schemes he used in The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Scoop, and a few others

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 30, 2019

The ace up the film's sleeve is cinematographer Darius Khondji... his sun-kissed lenses and evocative colours make the Cote d'Azur magic hour look paradisaical.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 3, 2019

The film charms with its words and entices with its good looks, strolling along, tugging at the heartstrings ever so gently.

| Original Score: 7.5/10 | Mar 22, 2019

A predicatable ending and too many moments that coulda, shoulda, woulda been brilliant helped it falter.

Just go see it. I can't say enough. It's simple and beautiful and brilliant. I can't remember the last time I sat through a film not wanting it to end, and smiling the whole time.

| Original Score: 9/10 | Nov 3, 2018

Its complete lack of connection with Allen's or anybody's reality is startling, which seems to get at the film's very themes of storytelling and the illusions and delusions we hold dear in order to get through our lives.

Sophie has the balls to challenge society and the brains to recognise authenticity in others and even if she's doing something that's not quite to the letter of the law, her winning personality somehow makes it okay.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 30, 2018

Firth and Stone both play magicians whose careers are built on a very willing suspension of disbelief, and "Magic in the Moonlight" requires that too.

| Aug 22, 2018

Even without an unnerving sense that Allen is mounting some sort of defense with his script, Magic in the Moonlight fails due to its overt aspiration to be admired as a reflection on the nature of belief.

| May 15, 2018

What's happened is what happens with all bad Allen films: he's flipped open his typewriter and it's just come out wrong.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 19, 2018

In short, and despite its title, I didn't feel the movie had enough "magic". [Full review in Spanish]
