Make Mine Music Reviews

It’s very much a package Disney movie. Much an mixed bag

A pretty solid package film of several Disney shorts all wrapped together by some pretty relaxing music. Best shorts were Casey at the Bat, Peter & the Wolf, and The Singing Whale.

With reduced staff because of the war, Disney released several anthology films of shorts. Make Mine Music seemed to try to recapture the magic of "Fantasia", but didn't succeed because of the many different types of music used in this collection. Again, the individual shorts are great, they just don't work together in any meaningful way. The Blue Bayou short was cut from "Fantasia" and the music was changed from Debussy's Clair de Lune to Blue Bayou sung by the Ken Darby Singers. The original still exists and is much better! Other favorites of mine include Casey at the Bat and The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met.

Some of the segments can get boring but the segments that work really do work!

Yaaaaa, just more of "Saludos Amigos" but with an even weaker tie in. Cause that's what I want to see with a Disney movie, right people? Like I'm not that big of a fan of either movie, but at least with "Saludos" I understand what they were trying to do and the thing tying them all together make sense enough. That being that the Disney animators went to South America for inspiration for their new cartoons. Did it work all the way though? No, but at least I can see where they are coming from. With "Make Mine Music", however, I can't find anything to tie all the segments together, except for maybe the styles of music that they chose because they were popular at the time. If that is the case, that's a really lazy "plot". There's nothing technically wrong with the movie, the animation is fine, the segments are fine, the singing is fine, but it's boring and unfocused, and it's not as creative or mature as "Fantasia" to get away with it. It's just like "Saludos Amigos" even down to THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. This is, of course, another easily skippable Disney movie for me, which is how I would describe all the package films so far. Oh, but don't you worry. We haven't even gotten to the worse of the bunch yet. For that, check out the next review, it's gonna be quite "Fancy".

This would have been a four star film if the story of Willie the opera singing whale had had a happier ending.

This classic Disney animated feature is made up of many dazzling segments. The best perhaps might be the story of Johnny Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnet, but everyone will have their own personal favourite. After viewing it as a full feature, it subsequently may be best viewed as individual segments (as some items may be too sophisticated for young children) It takes a similar style to ‘Fantasia', but with some lighter sequences. Anyone with a love of classic animation & used to looking at multiply sequenced features won't be disappointed – some sections just get better with several viewings. The shorter musical numbers are well served with lush animation that helps to draw out their mystical, poetic moods. Maybe not as good as its similar partner movie ‘Melody Time' but offers several special sequences.

Not a bad collection of cartoons including Casey at the Bat and Peter and the Wolf.

The Fantasia Rip Off does have its charm

Make Mine Music: ¼ of the compilation era, during the military occupation in WW2. Overall, a swing and a miss, with the exception of Peter and the Wolf.

This movie is pretty boring, but the theme of music saves it

a good collection of shorts

I love classical music. Nevertheless, this selection was awful. with the exception of Peter and the wolf.

Make Mine Music struggles against the legacy of it's predecessor Fantasia and can't seem to meet the same magic that that classic did. However, there is a lot of good animation and storytelling here despite its lack of political correctness. Especially when the film goes abstract it really clicks and the music just resonates with the stories. Where it fails is mostly within the Martins and the Coys, Casey at the Bat and Peter and the Wolf segments. I'd watch this again though; it was fun, artistic, and I felt entertained with its charm.

Somehow Make Mine Music reminded me of Hercules with a zany, comedic, and musical feel to it put with some well-done animation. While I'm not a fan of Hercules, I find Make Mine Music works as it's a collection of separate stories that have their own feel, humor, and charm to them. I adore the Clair de Lune sequence, mostly because of the fact that it was originally created for Fantasia. I wish they didn't put in their own music over it and instead kept the old music attached. Then again, I can understand why as it wouldn't match the tone of the rest of the film. Speaking of Fantasia, the best way to describe Make Mine Music is a comedic version of Fantasia, and it works. It never annoyed me to watch a Disney package film as I always liked to see different and creative teams of artists, writers, and musicians put onto different short projects. The cartoon shorts themselves ranged from OK to great. With a couple being OK, Casey at the Bat has some funny expressions on the characters and some humorously different ways of exaggerating the bodies of the characters. Along with a couple humorous moments in the short, everything else about it is standard. The story of the two hats has its own charm to it with some nice music. The very first one, the Martins and the Coys, while a bit predictable, did have me snickering several times and, strangely, even making me want to dance. All the Cats Join in is kind of like what I said about Casey at the Bat if it was entirely nothing but comedic movement in the characters, and that's perfectly fine with me as it also can be a bit creative at times. I love the animation on the wolf in Peter and the Wolf, along with some great narration by Sterling Holloway. The Without You sequence is also artistically pleasing and also very simple. I do think Andy Russell sings beautifully, and he does sound a bit like Dennis Day. The After You've Gone sequence is practically what I said about Without You if it had more energy to it. The final sequence with Willie the Whale has such talented voicework to it along with some great opera singing and even some drama. My personal favorite out of all of them is the one called Two Silhouettes. There's a way the Disney editors and animators put together something I've never seen before that fascinates me in its technique. While rotoscoping the two real-life ballet dancers, along with some wonderful singing by dear Dinah Shore, there's an effect where both the animated characters and the humans are all like shadows. It almost creates an illusion that they're all either cartoons or real life. Make Mine Music really pleased me, and it's disappointing not a lot of people liked it as it has a lot of great things to offer. At least, to me it does. 3.5/4

“The Whale that wanted to sing at the Met” is a gem.
