Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Reviews

May 16, 2025

**** this bull****, I'm getting out of here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil soars with stunning visuals and Angelina Jolie’s commanding presence as the dark fairy, but its cluttered plot and uneven pacing clip its wings. The expanded lore and Michelle Pfeiffer’s icy Queen Ingrith add intrigue, yet the film tries to balance spectacle with heart.

I'm choosing to review both films in the Maleficent franchise together, as they have both been released, and this gives me a chance to discuss them simultaneously. The series features Angelina Jolie in the titular role of the iconic character, Maleficent. Disney films always manage to capture my attention and let me relive my childhood, and these films are no exception. While some critics have been harsh on the live-action adaptations, there are indeed moments that evoke a sense of nostalgia and warmth, allowing viewers to reconnect with their inner child. That said, the screenplay does have its shortcomings, with some dry patches that transform Maleficent into a more sympathetic antihero. This shift in characterization can make it challenging to see her as the malevolent figure she was initially portrayed to be. I hope that a third installment will delve deeper into her character arc, allowing her to embrace her darker nature rather than presenting her as a misunderstood sweetheart, which detracts from the essence of Maleficent. I found Elle Fanning’s portrayal of Princess Aurora somewhat surprising; she doesn't quite embody the princess archetype as one might expect. Instead, she comes across more like a sidekick or a stepsister, which isn’t meant to be a slight against her talent. It’s simply a reflection of how she presents the character, which feels a bit flat and lacking the regal presence typically associated with royalty. In comparison, the first film is certainly better written than its sequel. I appreciated the cinematography and the world-building in the original, which captured the essence of the character beautifully. As the franchise progressed, I enjoyed watching Maleficent's descent into darkness. However, the second film hinted at her potential for evil but didn’t quite deliver. I want to see her fully embrace her role as a dark mistress, even if she isn’t technically a queen, and channel that powerful presence she embodies. As for Prince Charming, he should be a captivating, larger-than-life character in this franchise. Ironically, he feels more like an afterthought. While Harris Dickinson stepped in as the prince, I believe Disney missed a trick by not bringing back Brenton Thwaites. Dickinson, although talented, doesn’t quite fit the role, and his longer hair just didn’t work, making him come off as somewhat silly. Throughout the franchise, we’ve seen Diablo evolve into a human character, adding depth to his role. However, the introduction of Pinto was a bit perplexing. I'm still unsure of the character's gender; if Pinto is female, the shirtless look is confusing, and if male, it seems more fitting. Regardless, Pinto is a cute character, one that I’d love to see as a plush toy, although it’s disappointing that the marketing didn’t capitalize on this. In conclusion, both films are enjoyable and worth revisiting. I believe the franchise should continue, but it needs a stronger screenplay to develop the story further. It’s time to explore a new direction that empowers Maleficent, gives Princess Aurora her rightful narrative arc, and brings back the prince to fulfill his role in the story. Overall, Angelina Jolie remains the standout casting choice in this series.

WARNING SPOILERS I love angelina and this amazing cast and crew and I love the visuals and beautiful images, but it has mutiple endings, multiple storylines that you have to add up on your own. I am sure in someway to them it was a completely an amazing storyline, I am just a critic, It had so much potential but it was more of an extravagant movie visual art show. Love how beautiful the characters are, all of them ✨️❤️

This film is the sequel to Maleficent and follows Aurora and Prince Philip as they plan to marry. However, when a conflict arises between their mothers during a celebratory dinner at the castle, the king is cursed into a deep sleep. This event ignites a war between humans and fairies, with Maleficent and her fellow dark fae on one side, and the evil queen on the other, determined to wipe out their magical realm. Aurora, with Philip's help, must find a way to stop the queen before she destroys their home and wipes out all the magical creatures within. Overall, due to legendary battles, a magical and heartfelt story, breathtaking visuals and a star-studded cast , this movie is quite good, and even though this feature can feel a bit lengthy at times and it's titular character is underutilized, I still think that this was a solid follow-up that concluded the series well and I thoroughly enjoyed Disney's take on the red wedding and had a lot of fun with it.

I watched this on DVD recently. I saw the first movie and loved it, giving it a glowing 5 star review, so my expectations of this one were sky high. Sadly, my hopes were dashed, and I found this disappointing in almost ever respect. It still has big budget special effects, and an 'A' list of acting talent, but it lacks the most critical ingredients. The story is dull, dark, protracted and unappealing. I became very emotionally attached to Maleficent in the first film, gripped by the sense of injustice I felt for her. In this film, she's just a vengeful witch I don't care about, who is presented almost vampire like in some scenes. Towards the end the film develops into a kind of fantasy war movie, which I found very peculiar. When the credits finally rolled, I was relieved it was all over. As a Disney PG rated film, I feel sympathy for the hords of children who will have been subjected to this film as a cinematic treat. It's hardly suitable for children at all, other than as a punishment for bad behaviour. In summary, I did not like this movie and can't recommend it.

Both the 1st film and this one are incredible, I surprisingly liked the second one almost more than the first which I didn’t think was possible, they are both very well done and a new (better) spin on the sleeping beauty story line.

The sequel to the 2014 live-action interpretation of Sleeping Beauty, starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent. From the title, I thought this might be a course correction from the original film by making Maleficent the antagonist. This film doesn’t do that and continues the narrative from the first movie by having Phillip propose to Aurora. The true antagonist of the film is played by Michelle Pfeiffer, and she does play a great menacing villain. However, the writing for her plan is not well done and creates many plot holes. Most of the plot, including the introduction of others of Maleficent’s species, served no other point than to set up a big CGI fight at the end, instead of developing character arcs. Hard pass on this film.
