Mamma Mia! Reviews
Plot stinks. Acting and singing is even worse. Abba doesn't deserve this butchery
This movie is, without a doubt, one of my favorites of all time. The cast, the soundtrack, the storyline, everything is perfect. This is a must-watch!
Literally one of the greatest movies ever. I’ve probably watched it more than a dozen times and still enjoy it every watch. Cast, Songs, and Filming is all so on point!
I saw Mamma Mia!, the live musical, in person which was the best show I’ve ever seen. That deserved 5 stars. Watching this version however, I believe they should have just cast that cast rather than these Hollywood actors who cannot sing. I felt second hand embarrassment watching them cringe-sing, like Pierce Brosnan and the lads (oof), although they are beautiful people and the sets are lovely.
I absolutely love this movie! Takes me back to my younger days. Just a feel good show.
My go to film. ONE OF THE BEST FILMS IN HISTORY!🩷🩷
This is a sweet one! Honestly, ABBA is not a band I listen to even occasionally, but all of the performances were fun to watch and, considering we're talking about a musical, that's what matters. As curious as I was to know the answer to the mystery, I didn't end up rooting for anyone in particular and, to tell the truth, I wasn't interested in knowing the story of any of the daddy candidates. And look, the script was pretty biased in terms of screen time, right? It was clear who was the favorite (and it wasn't for daddy of the year). I found the "I love you all" ending with the bonding built in a few hours to be forced, but it wasn't something that bothered me or took away from the film's merit. Anyway, Amanda Seyfried is adorable here and her chemistry with the iconic Maryl Streep is delightful to watch. And can I say? The fact that all of the characters get a happy ending is simply refreshing!
A great movie to lift you up. Love the cast <3
I recently saw the broadway version and I was not impressed. Unfortunately the movie adaptation doesn't help it in anyway. Frankly I find this story just dumb and easily fixable and I have no clue why people like this at all.
Amanda Seyfried is an angel and everyone is having so much fun singing ABBA! Director Phyllida Lloyd’s jukebox musical romantic-comedy Mamma Mia! (2008) is tons of fun. Lloyd never lets her cast take it too seriously as the entire is just dancing around and launching into these iconic ABBA pop songs. Catherine Johnson’s script is playful, funny, and heartfelt with a simple and sweet plot of a girl wanting to meet her birth father, so she invites her mom’s ex-boyfriends to her wedding. Hearing all of these wonderfully written, beautifully sung, and super catchy ABBA songs again is always a treat. Mamma Mia! has aged well with its campy tone and strong performances from a delightful cast. They just look like they all had a blast filming Mamma Mia! Amanda Seyfried is incredible in Mamma Mia! as the heroine Sophie Sheridan. Her lovely singing tone is heavenly. Her powerful voice really carries and she does several fantastic renditions of classic ABBA tunes. Her acting is as endearing as ever with a natural sweetness that lets you care about Sophie finding her real dad to walk her down the aisle. Amanda Seyfriend is charming, gorgeous, and boasts a captivating vocal performance as well. I’m happy they chose Seyfried as Streep’s daughter for really convincing casting. Meryl Streep is excellent as the independent minded mother of Sophie named Donna Sheridan. I really have grown fond of Streep’s singing here as she actually impressed me hearing her emotional versions of ABBA’s slick pop songs. Pierce Brosnan is fun as the nurturing paternal figure of Sam Carmichael, giving it his all to try and sing as well as he can. Colin Firth has a pleasant manner as Harry Bright and a pretty soft singing voice. Stellan Skarsgård looked like he had a riot playing sailor Bill Anderson, and obviously Sophie’s blonde and blue eyed father, considering Amanda Seyfried’s looks compared to the other two brunettes. Julie Walters is crazy as Rosie Mulligan with a very playful and rowdy performance. Christine Baranski steals all of her scenes with her magnificent singing voice as Tanya Chesham-Leigh. Dominic Cooper is nice enough as Seyfried’s handsome love interest Sky Rymand. Editor Lesley Walker really lets us hear and see the whole performance of each song without obnoxious cuts away from the performers. Cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos captures the lush beauty of this Greek island in stunning wide shots. I like the sweeping camera movements to show us everyone and the natural landscapes. The more vulnerable dramatic scenes in close-ups felt appropriate. John Higgins’ bright lighting and the upbeat dance choreography by Anthony Van Laast and Nichola Treherne is excellent. All of ABBA’s songs by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, Stig Anderson, Agnetha Fältskog, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad all still hold up beautifully. Ann Roth’s costumes are really colorful and keep in line with relaxed island fashion. In short, Mamma Mia! is simply an entertaining tribute to ABBA with a fabulous ensemble led by Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep.
Ghastly, corny stuff! With Abbas melancholy thrown in! A waste of acting talent. Yuck! Watch "Buona Sera, Mrs Campbell" instead!
One of my favorite when I was a kid. I really like how the character’s act and they have great voices when singing. I think I liked this movie the way they had musical scene’s in it, bringing a good impact to the movie. Worth a watch, you will truly enjoy it. This is also the reason how I met my all time favorite pop group ABBA. All their songs are from ABBA, basically this movie was a based from a pop group ABBA. It was great, the way they act through the song’s, you can really feel their emotion’s by them singing it, Truly great! If you love this movie, you will definitely will love ABBA. So watch the movie and listen to ABBA!
My friend showed this to me and it actually brought a smile to my face! While I typically don't gravitate towards musicals and while there could’ve been a bit more focus on the main character instead of the supporting characters, this one was executed quite well in a few scenes with its dancing sequences and musical numbers. I liked seeing Piers Brosnan as one of the possible fathers, always a good presence on screen for the audience. Meryl Streep also did well and I’m surprised at how well her and her friends moved in certain maneuvers for being their age! Dancing as an older woman can’t be easy on the bones and muscles but they did it enthusiastically and convincingly in many parts!
Que filme maravilhoso, as músicas do grupo ABBA, essa ambientação nessa ilha paradisiaca da Grécia, os personagens, a bagunça e confusão com os 3 pais, Mamma Mia! é uma experiência muito boa.
A.S.A.S. = Abba Songs Always Slap. This star-studded musical movie is purely vibes, which is not a negative when the vibes are IMMACULATE! Full of Abba bops and heavily saturated shots of Greece, this is the perfect watch for a relaxing summer day. Amanda Seyfried is in her bag when cast in film musicals, as is Merl Streep because she is Meryl freakin’ Streep! It’s fun to watch the potential fathers—Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth—sing along to varying degrees and bounding on a boat. Some of the choreography feels like it lost some of the stage sauce in its film adaptations, but its hard to complain when its performed over pure Abba heat.
A simple story told using ABBA's hit songs. You can tell the entire cast had a blast shooting this musical. Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters are cast perfectly! Just a fun movie to watch on a rainy day if you're feeling blue.
“A mother. A daughter. Three possible fathers. Take a trip down the aisle you'll never forget.” I mean what don’t you love about Mamma Mia? I love ABBA. The Mamma Mia storyline is *chefs kiss*. The soundtrack is everything. 5/5 stars.
Since I was young, I've absolutely loved "Mamma Mia!" — it’s been one of my favorite movies for years. The songs they chose, all ABBA hits, are so catchy and fun; they perfectly fit the story and make me want to sing along every time. The entire cinematic experience is stunning, especially the vibrant, sun-soaked scenes in Greece, which now tops my travel bucket list because of this movie. The cast is phenomenal, with actors like Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried bringing so much life and charm to their roles. The choreography is another highlight; every dance sequence is so energetic and perfectly matches the joyous vibe of the movie. Honestly, I don’t have a single bad thing to say about "Mamma Mia!"— it’s the kind of movie that makes me feel happy every time I watch it, and it’s definitely a musical masterpiece in my eyes.
Just re- watched since we luv the music and wanted something lite. Guess I forgot how cringey was the acting. Would comment on the story line if there was one that made sense....
