Mary Queen of Scots Reviews
Had so looked forward to this because too few historical dramas reach the big screen these days. But what a disappointment. I could’ve forgiven the agenda-driven casting had the dialogue and plot been at least a bit historical or interesting. Not even a hint of Mary’s complexities such as her involvement in plotting against Elizabeth and Elizabeth herself being portrayed as a caricature.
I think time will look very favourably upon this misunderstood masterpiece. There is some incredible casting, some stunning acting performances and as a whole it is a beautiful feast for the eyes. Ronin is spectacular. Spellbinding. Lowden is amazing. A truly stunning film and one which lives with me, and deserves so much more praise than it seems to get. Beautiful. I think it’s excellent.
Entertaining, well-acted
Even if the final 10 minutes are quite compelling, the rest of the movie isn't much more than a elaborately costumed tawdry melodrama.
HORRIBLE!! Cast was awful! Use more Scottish people or English not people that do not fit into the history! Ridiculous! Musician was suppose to be Italian!! I am half Italian. Couldn't they get someone British thats Italian by ancestry with the Scottish ancestry? Gets me annoyed. I love history especially European and British history and I watch period films like most people who love history like I do. Be authentic with the cast!
Soairse is Fantastic! Love Margo but really think that Soirse was the the one who shone through. really cool to see this story play out! love the history and he performances really brought the magnitude to the front of what took place! Well done!
If you like strongly scripted and well-acted period dramas then this is for you. Ronan and Robbie are excellent well supported by Martin Compston and Jack Lowden
A movie that is takes many liberties with the historical content that was not needed. All the actors did a good job with the source material that they were given and the movie does a good job with the similarities and differences between the two female leads characters.
Similar to my feelings towards "The Duchess (Kiera Knightly)". It's a great historical story. It is well acted. But it is deathly dull. Some really interesting themes and it is truly appalling how women were treated in those days. But, ultimately I didn't care. I just wanted the film to end. I mean obviously I didn't want to see the Queen of Scots decapitated. But you can see where I'm coming from.
I loved Saoirse and Margot's portrayal of both women. The film requires patience but, especially as a woman myself, I think it leaves you with a remarkable sense of community with other women.
The great actors can't make up for the untrue and uncomfortable take on history.
I enjoyed this one and the story it told about the battle among the Scots for the throne and alliance with England, especially between Mary & her brother & her cousin Elizabeth on the throne. Great cast helped deliver the story along with the time period and locations, even if not historically correct
I'd recommend to see this movie... but Elizabeth never said a lot of things in the movie. The Queen of England never met the Queen of Scotland. there is no record of that. Elizabeth didn't want any childreen, if she wanted, she would be done with it... but She cared about more being Queen and don't give that to someone else. Also, she waitted for Robert most of her life. Childreen weren't a priority for her. She was a really strong woman for that time and her people loved her for that.
I found this to be quite an engrossing watch. It may not (pretty much certainly isn't) entirely historically accurate/factual but it features good performances from the main cast and some impressive settings and so its watchable from that point of view. I thought it was quite gripping in the scenes featuring both of the distant warring family members and I thought it featured some rather impressive examples of cinematography. Also, I thought David Tennant gave a quite powerful performance, even though you don't see him much as such but moreso in terms of his speeches heard by a crowd of people on more than one ocassion. I feel his voice is instantly recognisable and I'd say him and Saoirse Ronan gave the most memorable performances, although Margot Robbie pulls her weight too. Elements of the plot may be a bit fanciful but I found it quite a gripping and interesting watch regardless. Also, I feel I can't review it without mentioning that there are some sex scenes and partial nudity present. It would be a slightly awkward watch for younger people if with parents and it did add a bit of a salacious element to it, which perhaps wasn't entirely necessary but for the most part its a gripping watch.
I cannot give this no stars unfortunately. Painfully miscast- even those who have no interest in History would see that the actress playing Mary looked like Elizabeth and vice versa. I understand that not everything can be historically accurate for the sake of entertainment and creativity- but this is beyond that. Saturated with woke imagery and agendas, this is not entertainment just blatant and stale pushing of meaningless points. Disappointed to see Guy Pierce involved here- he must regret it- apart from the Paycheck I suppose. Do not waste time on this. Its the worst movie of any genre I have ever seen.
Great movie. Some questionable historical facts(hard to be 100% from 1500's) great movie, a lot of drama. Great characters.
Lindo filme...
Mary Queen of Scots (rental) is a a real head scratcher. A brilliant cast is mostly wasted with a meandering screenplay that seems to care far more about the bedroom habits of Mary than anything resembling the reasons she might be important. The director is a famous stage director but this was their first movie (and giving the inept work...likely will be their only one) using stage techniques did not help the already struggling screenplay. The costumes are fun but often lead to confusion. Racial diverse cast is used in supporting roles but not the major ones making it seem more a weird gimmick than any actual move for diversity. Most of the time you will have only a vague notion of what is going on , let alone why. Mary fails to age for 20 plus years at one point in the film. The final act skips most of what could have made the film worth while. Acting is solid and David Tennant has fun as John Knox. 2 stars out of 5.
I learnt some history, never knew much about Mary Queen of Scotts other than her name. I also never knew her connection to the Queen of England, Elizabeth. This movie failed for me, not because of the acting, but because it sped through all the events that happened. It was so rushed, one moment there was a baby, next moment the baby was 3-5 years old... apply that to every scene.
It's a confused film which really didn't need to be made. Extremely stylised in a way which i don't believe the director (and co) knew how to pull off. confusion over whether they were making a peter greenaway ish film or some netflix historical drivel. this film ends up being a bit of both and therefore will not really appeal to anyone in their right mind.
