Mayday Reviews

The film's strong message was overshadowed by a poor story. It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen but I didn't enjoy it. This one is better left unwatched.

A dark, surreal fantasy movie. Interesting premise, great acting, gorgeously shot.

Not a particularly exciting film with some good bits. You follow the main character who opens the film in a sad life being bullied by a bad man, there's a power cut and main character runs downstairs, into the breaker board, then climbs into an oven, which drops her into the sea. This bit was quite cool, because now we're on an island with some sort of quirky 1940esque sirens who are luring men to their deaths in storms or shooting/stabbing them slightly offscreen to presumably save on trouble for the filmmaker. With this it's got quite an exciting and not often done sort of twist but it throws it all away because the film just loves itself too much and assumes it can carry far too much. You've got complicated group dynamics, main character not wanting to murder men, co-protagonist being a bit of a nutter, main character wanting to murder men, female solidarity, female division all loosely tied together in a sort of wandering storyline where tthere's dollops of "does this make sense or do I not understand *the art*" The camera work is pretty good, beautiful, and a lot of the acting from the main characters pretty excellent. Sort of worth a watch if you're doing the ironing and there's not a re-run of Corrie on the tv.

A transfixing feminist fever dream that takes the viewer to unexpected places. The setting, direction and performances are all top notch.

Mayday has a promising and interesting start, only to somehow unravel into an almost musical about a war between boys and girls. Not really sure what deep truth they were trying to communicate, because the film definitely isn't fun.

The dancing with the men and the chics in the water was super stupid. Makde the movie super stupid.. did someone just want to try and make it a partial musical?

Terrible acting. I thought it was going to turn into a porn movie during certain scenes.

As a right wing gun owning conservative cis man I must say... I liked this movie. I don't see why people are connecting feminism to this film. People have completely missed the point if they think it's about man hating and that is an incredibly shallow interpretation of the movie and which itself is almost the complete opposite. Spoilers... It's about a woman dealing with abuse (probably a rape) and escaping into her mind where she meets different characters representing parts of herself and this is how she is coping with what happened. One character (Marsha) is technically man hater and attempts to make our main (Ana) the same as her and almost succeeds. It's important to see though that Marsha isn't a person, she's an emotion, Ana's hate. Ana's is trying to figure out how to direct the pain from her experience. She has a hate associated to what happened but she is also conflicted as well, and Marsha almost convinces her to be swallowed by the hatred but Ana realizes she can move past it. This is probably a better message that is being overlooked. "In the dark I can still see the stars." Not all men are bad... or in a whole, not all people are bad. She has a boyfriend that is caring and loving towards her and she almost loses him to the blind hate, but she makes her way back to see that he is not bad. She also grows and is stronger and more confident personally to finish out the film. The fact the people are misinterpreting this film is the exact problem which society now and why probably people won't grow like Ana. Subgroups of humanity are not all fully bad.

For a man hating feminist movie I kinda actually liked this and I caught onto the mythology behind it on my own, that never happens ! 3/5

Such a great exploration of this moment in the developing feminist consciousness.

Disregard the bad reviews. The film is refreshingly different. Not a romance, not a war movie, not a mystery or a sci fi. First of all, enter the fantasy. This is a movie on par with the Wizard of Oz. It's not so much about feminism than self-determination (which is feminism). It's great.
