The Milk of Sorrow Reviews
Brilliant! The cinematography, acting, and screenplay are outstanding. Magnificent performance by Magaly Solier. A gem of a film!
Its Oscar nomination is acceptable considering Solier's performance and the slow-paced visual experience it gives.
Its abstract narrative structure, heavy themes and slow pacing don't make for comfortable viewing, but its visual style, emotional narrative and superb performances prove that there are many good opportunities for filmmaking in Peru.
The most beautiful movie I've seen since long time. Incredible imagery, music, storytelling, and acting.
The Milk Of Sorrow is a wonderful film that might not be for everyone. It's slow and very hands off in its direction. The proceedings transpire with a non sympathetic approach. I felt bad for the protagonist in a real world sense in that i understood where she was coming from, but without all the usual hollywood cues hollywood uses to munipulate emotion from the audience. The underlining allegory of the film is about dealing with old wounds and a destructive past; and how sometimes it may be easier to cling to pain than to move past it. I can relate to that and i can see how it can be difficult to let go of something that has soo deeply scarred you and you people that its essentially changed your DNA. It's beautifully shot, with a wonderful but simplistic sound track. Highly recommended viewing Five out of Five stars.
Puntaje Original: 6.5 A pesar de contar con una poderosa historia, La Teta Asustada resulta visualmente pobre.
Claudia Llosa good performance , very good narrative , offering disturbing images , performances of outstanding Magaly Solier , giving honor to his nomination in Academy Awards Foreign Language Film , a jewel for Peruvian cinema and the world's eyes .
This is an exceptional film, very dry, very sober but filled with details and elements that reflects on both, the social political climate after the civil war that torn the country apart for years and the slow awakening of a young girl to life and it's reality. Carrying the weight of the past and the trauma of having her mother raped while pregnant with her, she is one of the most complex character I have ever seen on screen. This film is marvelously directed, very precise and definitely setting its own rules and its own unique atmosphere. Beautiful hard film to watch.
23/30. Tim Robey (Daily Telegraph): Think twice before ordering chips in Lima. Abstract and detached but captivating.
Intriguing journey of loss and healing of a woman who lose her mother, who was her life-support, and having to lift herself from personal loss and grief, amidst living in a household that celebrates much joy and happiness, contrasting life with the sad and bleak landscape, makes this a hauntingly beautiful watch.
This is a "B" (82marks) movie(Blue-ray disk), which won the Golden Bear at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival. In a critic's words: The Milk Of Sorrow is about a country dealing with old wounds and old divisions, and it's about how sometimes it can be easier to cling to pain than to move past it. And I think this movie is realistically and beautifully shot, a wonderful mix of realism and aesthetics. Is it difficult to make? No, it is just that in a third world country like Peru, any new director with an average skill of film making can shoot a pretty good movie by making good uses of the unexplored cultural fields, political and psychological ones, of Peru. Whereas, in countries like US, Europe and some rich Asian countries where film industries are well developed(or commercialized) it is more challenging to shoot a great and realistic movie of this kind. In this movie, Film making and documentary are both conjunctive here. Anyway, this is a good movie worth seeing.
Gripping film about a Peruvian Woman who has lived with fear her whole life. It is beautifully done and the film shots make you feel that you are right there. The movie gets very slow at times and I found that it took away from the point of the film. It is not action packed but very emotional. Do not watch this movie if you are looking for something upbeat. This is a heavy movie to watch but worth it.
