Miss Julie Reviews
Gets dark and weird as it explores thorny themes of class and power.

It is claustrophobic by design, which becomes oppressive and at times airless. It’s fascinating to watch, though not necessarily enjoyable ...

There are many things worth commending, one of which is the strength of the performances. But as I step back and think about it as an overall piece, I find myself overwhelmingly ... unaffected.

A film which aims to leave a bad taste in your mouth, for Miss Julie the question is whether that's a fatal flaw or an unrelenting examination of the ugly human heart.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 7, 2019
Rife with mawkish histrionics and a thoroughly overwrought script, it's hard to maintain interest in what should be an intriguing watch.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 6, 2019
Unfortunately the static nature of the sets and the cinematography make it difficult for the film to overcome its stage origins, and threatens to undermine the naturalistic conceit.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 11, 2018
In this overly literal adaptation, we know invisible forces are at work only when characters directly address their presence.
| Original Score: C- | Oct 5, 2018
Strindberg's searing insight into human nature is at the root of the film's power. Familiar and recognisable behaviours and illuminating truths, often painful, open our eyes to our frailty and greed.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 30, 2018
Chastain's performance feels too skittish, if not a little mad straight out of the blocks, playing into the hands of Strindberg's chauvinistic portrait of Julie, rather than challenging it.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 21, 2017
The result is decent rather than spectacular.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Oct 30, 2017
The film has a singular focus on these characters and their power struggles of class and gender, but fails to ever feel like it's really going anywhere.
| Mar 10, 2017
Miss Julie, directed by Liv Ullmann whose only concern is delivering an honest rendition of August Strindberg, succeeds in doing just that.
| Dec 6, 2016
Miss Julie's acid dialogue and sardonic twists burn down to the bone of costume drama's fattened arm, its darkness closer to original-series Upstairs Downstairs than to polished one-percenter porno Downton Abbey.
| Jun 20, 2016
Altogether, it is a classy production, but it rarely gets past the outward forms and down to the inner truths.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 11, 2016
Chastain is as brittle and fragile a Miss Julie as ever there was.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 2, 2016
It starts off as a will-they-won't-they as to whether Chastain's baron's daughter will sleep with Farrell. It ends up as a will-they-won't-they ever shut up. Should have been called Shouting Miss Julie.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Jan 1, 2016
Farrell and Morton are solid, but Chastain's sensational - and Ullmann is canny enough to simply let her rip.
Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 18, 2015
In maintaining the period setting, Ullmann hasn't found a way to make the themes feel particularly relevant and, despite the committed performances, the intended naturalism of the play feels too theatrical on film.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 7, 2015
Liv Ullmann's adaptation of August Strindberg's play might best be billed as a midsummer night's sex tragedy. It is on the overwrought side.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 4, 2015
All talents are ill-served by the unambitious handling of the material.
