A Political Character Drama Classic. The acting is phenominal across the board. Filled with witty and sharp dialouge that is powered by Chastain's incredible performance. One of the strongest I have ever seen from her if not the most. Everyone else is really good but she just dominates. The music is solid but really needed o be a bit more catchy perhaps and can blend quite often but it's used well overall. Everything else is really good. The direction is really strong with stellar performances and great framing/camerawork. This is a political story about the battle for a gun bill and the personal drama of a woman at the center of it. It does a very good job mergin Sloane's story with the political background battle going on. Where this struggles (I use that term lightly because it does a remarkable job overall) is that this can get VERY VERY bogged down in the weeds of political lobbying. Rules, procedures, following multiple senators plots and where the vote stands on top of Sloane's character is almost impossible to remember every single detail this throws at you. It throws SOOOOO much at you so quickly it's difficult to retain. At 40 minutes in I thought we must've been WELL over halfway because of just how much this had thrown in the unfolding battle. Shocked the crap out of me we weren't even close to halfway. It's not boring at all and it's riveting to watch a trainwreck of a person unfold while learning the inner workings of lobbying. This defintely expects you to know a thing or two about lobbying already before going into it though. If your not into politics already this defintely isn't the best film to start with to learn. If you are a fan of any actors in this, the director, political movies or interesting character studies this is something to check out. This isn't for everyone though as good as this is.

I had to rewind several times to catch up with the snappy Sorkin-on-Ritalin pace. (Watching 8 years later it was nice to see Jake Lacy & Alison Pill, stars from White Lotus (money, class, & greed) and Picard (loss of all freedom to jingoist autocracy) Venn diagram overlap is the US political body.)

One of my favorite movies of all time

First, Jessica Chastain's performance is, as usual, beyond reproach. Strong and Lithgow ably render what is required of their one-note characters. Unfortunately, Stuhlbarg, who can make any role come to life, no matter how low-budget the production or how poorly written, is limited to shouting obscenities and threats, a half-note character. It all comes down to the writing. The plot and setting are interesting enough, but the dialogue (mostly monologue, actually) is high-velocity, dense verbiage that might impress the viewer if he had time to follow the thoughts. Sorkin on steroids. Better luck next time, Skippy.

Great movie , tight and tense with twists throughout . Jessica Chastain deserved to get a golden globe or Oscar for her performance.

Took me alot of years to see this because i thought it wouldn't be any good but i was wrong. It was actually good. Had some weak parts but nothing that would ruin the movie. Jessica Chastain absolutely killed it in this and played an incredibly intelligent, yet flawed and internally chaotic person to perfection.

Concerning the technical aspects, this 2016 film is top notch¡ªfast-paced story, crisp writing, and excellent performances esp. by Jessica Chastain, who has carried the film on her shoulders. Nevertheless the issue that it addresses¡ªgun rights, which is a very important one¡ªisn¡¯t presented with nuance. Clearly it champions gun control, but it demonizes those who support gun rights as the dirty ones, the rich ones, the powerful ones, and their side as the principled, the powerless. (I may argue that in the real world, it¡¯s the other way around.) The world, or let¡¯s say the United States, even on this single issue, is more nuanced and more complex than that. This reality makes this film a wasted opportunity.

A formidable presence on camera, Jessica Chastain shows that she knows how to embody a good character. Very well balanced film, with very firm and winning dialogues, and a perfect plot twist!

She meant to be defeated to win, in front of those old guys, with unexpected help from a young guy, who should be anonymous.

Really good performances, particularly from Chastain! Beautiful to look at, and I like the pacing of the film. The message and motivation for the MC is really murky and doesn't really get resolved at the end. Worth watching! 3.5 stars

An unexpected ride. I was glued until the end and oh, what a ending.

It was difficult to cheer for Miss Sloane as the heroine. She was completely unlikable and smug. Very heavy handed view of lobbyists and government legislators. Would not recommend this movie. Chastain has performed better in many more movies.

Watching this again after a few years. I am thinking there are a few great movies about politcal intrigue and, in this movie; the murky world of lobbyists. I am thinking about All The President's Men (personal favourite) but wonder how this movie would have stacked up had it been released at the same time. A young Redford and Hoffman strutting their capable stuff, what could go wrong? And we all remember it. But I think Chastain's strong performance is nuanced, energetic and credible with a strong supporting cast. So questiion. Will Chastain garner the same level of recognition from this demanding performance as aforementioned, Redford and Hoffman?

I love you Jessica Chastain, but this movie is a huge stinkbomb.
