Monkeybone Reviews

Dec 21, 2024

This is definitely in my top ten films, it’s off the wall insanity with a ton of gorgeous and creative visuals that still hold up. Stop motion never fails to impress me, and the way it’s implemented into live action here is truly incredible.

It has a simple plot, but it’s so zany, I can’t be intrigued by it. Chris Karan’s performance near the end makes this even sillier and canny save it. Interesting and creative set designs and creative at best, a few performances are solid but don’t elevate it to good. Not very funny either. Monkeybone has a fun zone to someone else’s point of view, but it’s reckless and not ashamed of what it wants to be. Whatever it’s going for.

The movie was a very exciting adventure from start to finish

This movie is so bizarre and OTT but it’s wildly creative, sometimes funny (both unintentional and intentional) and the cast it giving it’s all

If films are rated based on the quality of the film divided by the quality of the cast, Monkeybone would have to end up in the bottom 10 of all movies ever made. Right now, I can't even think of another film that's comparable.

This movie is crazy and F*ckin' trash! I can't believe Brendan Fraser act in this garbage!

Henry's and his funny imagination character style.

Monkeybone has a unique & creative look, with a story that could have been really entertaining. However, it relies so much on juvenile humor and the comedy falls flat on its face. I still have no idea for which age group this movie was intended. I guess it goes to show that spending a lot of money on production design and visual effects doesn't make a movie great.

A goofy, super weird, off the wall comedy that is what “Cool World” tried to be. It’s not for everyone, but it’s gonzo, punk rock, disturbingly Freudian milieux is realized in its fantasy world. Unfairly maligned and poorly marketed, (it was marketed as a kids film, when it probably should have been rated R), this is a masterpiece of surrealism and intentional idiocy; both satirizing and revelling in the shock-cartoon craze of the late 90’s. Add in a great supporting cast, and committed performances from Fonda and especially Fraser, and you get an unforgettable, (albeit imperfect), alt-comedy film. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. It’s not for everyone, (in fact I’d say avoid it if it looks like something you’d dislike), but cinephiles and comedy fans will find more than enough to pique their interest.

State of the art efx for the early 2000s, a little all over the place. A one of a kind story line with stellar slapstick but becomes a bit overbearing and only has one gear.

Good movie, might watch again, but hard to recommend. This is a weird movie. Not only do you get a stop motion like imaginary monkey as a character, you get Brendan Fraser acting like he thinks it acts, an other-world for the dead and imaginary alike as well as Whoopie Goldberg as Death. Oh, and Dave Foley naked. The story itself, an imaginary character taking over its creator's body for some nefarious purpose, is actually really good. The execution just isn't fantastic the entire time, particularly the 3rd act. When a movie starts good and ends weak, it leaves you with a poor memory of it. Ultimately, it was an enjoyable, but it could have been a lot better, and there are plenty of better movies to watch.

Strange does not mean good. Absolutely unwatchable.

Monkeybone isn't lacking in stunning stop-motion visuals and, to some extent, originality. So how come the director of classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline as well as the above-average James and the Giant Peach made such a colossal misfire? The rest of the crew aren't entirely blameless, either, mind you. The screenwriter wrote the story for Batman. Because that won't cause this movie to be mistaken for a Tim Burton feature even though he had nothing at all to do with this movie. Brendan Fraser is miscast, the jokes are annoying & uncomfortable, the characters have no memorability or distinct personality to them and as for the stop-motion visuals we are only seeing this movie for...they're only there for about 1/3 of the movie. Most of the movie is Brendan Fraser portraying a stop-motion monkey inside a man's body (how did that tiny monkey adjust to this large man's body so quickly, anyway?). I want to see this beautifully-realised world where comatose people get to stay around until they wake up again, not somebody acting like a lunatic yet having nothing in his performance that makes him stand out than if it were to be performed by any other actor. While I'm glad Henry Selick managed to redeem himself with Coraline and underseen CGI short film (the latter of which is also from Laika, surprisingly) Moongirl before mysteriously stopping making movies and instead attempting to get some other stop-motion Neil Gaiman adaptations off the ground, it's not hard to see why Monkeybone put his career in dire straits. If you've never seen this movie, you're not missing out on much.

I was told this would be a totally unique experience and that prediction was not far off.

It's not just style over substance- it's wasted style, trash writing, stiff/miscast acting, obnoxious inbred titular character, and being a contradictory comedy over substance.
Three little positives I can mine out: the visuals, director Selick's animation, and Chris Kattan's physical comedy.
The film spends most of the time with a fascination for comas and ‘nightmare juice'. Perhaps it should've stayed in either realm and spared us our lives.

I went with 2 stars with this movie very 90's a pretty odd movie from back in the day. The movie was kinda weird but not the worst movie to watch. I seen this movie a few times and I would watch this movie again 2 stars a look of weird stuff happens in this movie.

A movie that is easily described with one word, meh!

See it yourself. Don't believe the bad ratings. This move has superb acting and is very funny. The funniest line has to be when the sister goes into the room where the life support is keeping Brendan Fraser alive asks the Doctor where the Plug is

Bizarre visuals, but everything else is pretty poor.
