The Mule Reviews
Lovely film. A little gross at times, but that doesn't take away from the plot. Also, Leigh Whannell was in it, so it's an automatic 5/5
it is better than you might assume from the summary, but John Noble kind of ruins every scene he's in. having him be the big bad guy just doesn't click, it's neither funny or ominous, and he has very fake teeth. he was not really any good as denethor in the first place, and generally is unsettling in the wrong types of ways (creepy old man vs drug lord). the rest of the cast, including another notable LotR alumni: Hugo Weaving, do a perfectly serviceable job for what the script gives them, which is not much. the film seems like it will get funny to start, but around the 30 minute mark i was already sensing it run out of ideas. more establishing scenes in the first act that didn't begin instantly with the smuggling operation would probably have done quite a lot for this. the movie isn't really funny. it's also not a terrible watch, but it feels like it's got one foot in comedy and one in thriller, which leaves it with a generally inconsistent tone. i can't help feeling that this would have been much better if it leaned further in one direction.
Honestly i thought the movie sucked, the cartel was trying to hard to act too aggressive it seemed like their organization was ran by low iq individual that couldnt run a gas station let alone a cartel it was a constant pointless pissing contest between cartel members and earl was constantly under intimidation like hes being forced to do the runs like hes not here voluntarily. Also the power change in the cartel was weak and unnecessary how many cartel leaders get taken out by their second in command out of fear of going to jail in mexico in their home turf which really doesnt make sense especially because we seen the dea saying they werent getting any real busts so you got scared because a couple dime bag dealers got raided but No thought that theres a snitch somewhere in the cartel. Typically if your safehouses are getting hit one right after another someone is talking that isn't a coincidence then we fall back on the competency of the cartel members.
Excellent movie, exciting and engrossing.
Horrendously bad movie. Really have to question the good scores given. Where you guys having a laugh?
With a decent premise and a solid cast this is a dark comedy that provided a few laughs and some general entertainment but was generally not that funny, really rather repetitive in areas and tends to drag in areas. It does however have a good score/soundtrack and an okay payoff.
It's hard to believe this was written by the same person who wrote SAW and INSIDIOUS. Then again, when a script is developed into a Hollywood movie it goes through so many professional re-writes that it's mostly not the same script that was originally submitted. That being said, The Mule suffered the most amateur writing mistake: A Passive Protagonist. The Hero literally has no desire other than to not shit himself. That's his only goal in life. And that is why we end up with a film about some loser that gets kicked around in life and ends up on a hotel bed for 2 weeks trying not to shit his pants.
Consistently funny as well as smart, The Mule is far from an easy or pleasant watch, but somehow you'll be satisfied in the end.
Absorbing, droll Aussie retro-nostalgic black comedy / thriller set in 1983. Incisively written and impressively cast. Angus Sampson is a standout as the titular fall guy.
Great movie & great performances! Angus Sampson provides a performance well worth international recognition.
An intriguing Australian drama (some comedy, but not many laughs), but it was always going to be hard to keep the tension up when it's basically 100min of waiting for a man in a room to go to the toilet! A truly disgusting scene halfway through leaves a bad taste in your mouth for the remainder of the film. Not horrible, but not particularly enjoyable either.
I laughed out loud several times. If you like darker comedy and a couple of twists and turns then it's definitely worth the watch.
