My Cousin Rachel Reviews
Mourning gowns, black satin, and lace veils add to her half-Italian allure amid secret letters, charismatic storytelling, and smitten heirs.

Rachel Weisz is amazingly inscrutable...

On balance, both screen versions of My Cousin Rachel are of comparable quality. Where this new version improves upon its 1952 predecessor is in the character of Rachel.

[A] sophisticated exploration of the consequences of an active and complex female sexuality in what polite society designated to be a woman's timid, matronly years.

In any event, the British still do these things relatively well, in their sleep, as it were. This is probably Michell's best film since Persuasion (1995).

Practically a must see for any fan of Du Maurier's lit adaptations.
| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 17, 2020
Weisz is, of course, the stand-out in an impressive cast, able to convey so much more ambiguity in one glance then the story itself seems keen to apply.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 30, 2020
The movie is stunningly photographed, deftly acted and masterfully structured by Michell.

It's all so much melodrama wrapped in a mystery told through handwritten letters and askance looks across lavish feasts, and if you're into this sort of thing, My Cousin Rachel is much less stuffy than one would expect.

In its own way, it's all very handsomely done, with Olivia de Havilland as the enigmatic Rachel and newcomer Richard Burton as the nephew.

This film uses an engrossing love story to pierce the heart of the literary femme fatale archetype to its very core.

It's worth checking out for Rachel Weisz' performance and beautiful production values.

A borderline anticlimactic end doesn't quite deliver on the impressive constructions of My Cousin Rachel's first two acts, but a stirring epilogue provides an effective capstone to this nuanced thriller.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 2, 2019
It's worth a watch in theaters, but I would just caution to expect for a very heavy, and thought-provoking film. Even then, you're probably still not ready to watch it.
| Original Score: 8.5/10 | Jan 30, 2019
A film of wonderful performances and a did she/didn't she story that had me on the edge of my seat, along with their rather cavalier attitude to candles when in the presence of muslin drapes and white cotton nighties.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 10, 2019
There was a lot to like about My Cousin Rachel, as the story kept me guessing and it was beautiful to watch. The gorgeous sets, well done costumes, and especially the acting of the background characters...
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Nov 9, 2018
My Cousin Rachel really is prototypical claptrap. It's possessed of such a flat and minimal conceit that is so telegraphed, it's beyond satire.
| Original Score: 1/5 | Nov 3, 2018
In a film that is all about beguilement, Weisz is perfectly cast as Rachel.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 23, 2018
While we are left scratching our heads as to whether Rachel is trying to kill Philip, it's more disappointing that she doesn't succeed.
| Aug 23, 2018
The film becomes expectedly wooden and melodramatic.
