Take a journey with maverick musician Neil Young in this personal, behind-the-scenes doc as he cruises the coast on his recent solo tour. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker and Young's wife, Daryl Hannah, Coastal offers a glimpse behind the curtain of this unguarded iconoclast, as he navigates a return to the stage post-Covid -- from his everyday observations on the bus to his candid, wry banter with his audience. The illuminating film also features songs rarely, if ever played live, performed in breathtakingly beautiful theaters.

Peter Sobczynski RogerEbert.com The only thing that “Coastal” manages to accomplish is something that I would have usually thought impossible—it makes him come across as a bore. Rated: 1.5/4 Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Poppie Platt Daily Telegraph (UK) [Hannah] somehow takes one of the most interesting men in rock and turns him into a figure with all the substance of a cardboard cut-out ordered on the cheap. Rated: 2/5 Apr 17, 2025 Full Review Bob Strauss San Francisco Chronicle The documentary could have used a little more excitement, but “Coastal” leaves us with a lingering notion that we’ve seen something special. Rated: 2.5/4 Apr 15, 2025 Full Review Stephen Silver Living Life Fearless It's way, way more interesting when Young is on stage than when he’s off it. Apr 25, 2025 Full Review Sean Burns North Shore Movies "The mellowest of hangout movies. I found myself admiring its cozy willingness to be boring.” Apr 19, 2025 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk Coastal isn’t going to convert a bunch of new fans to the ways of Neil, and even long-time supporters might wish for a bit more action and possibly a few different songs. Rich D I admire his talent and I knew the material, but I think he is so much better with a band. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/25/25 Full Review John H What a guy! What a journey! What a movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Rob L A very quiet and intimate look at this iconic and treasured musician. We loved everything about this film, from the black and white style, cinematography, and close-in but not crowded feel. Not a lot of time is wasted on crowd shots or reactions, In fact, the crowd noise is barely there in the mix. The music is of course transcendent. My partner is younger and really never followed NY's music, but came away with an appreciation of both the music and the absolute 'presence' of Neil. See it in theaters if you can. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Dianna H Neil Young is so talented. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Gary Not a big fan of black & white films. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Steve Zinser Neil is just SO Mellow and Peaceful! Easy to listen to and so delightful! Nice and Easy!
