Seeing Ambulance Blues live was incredible. I got mildly annoyed that a lot of the guitar playing shots were of Neil Young's face. I would have rather have seen what he was doing. "Mellow My Mind" on 6-string banjo was badass too. And the jams on "No Hidden Path" and "Like A Hurricane".... great stuff.

If you like Neil Young's music you will like this show. If you don't like his music, then what are you doing watching this? The Neil Young fan will appreciate the closeups, the chance to watch Neil Young perform in solo and with his present band and the brief glimpses of Neil backstage. The burning question about this movie: What's with the red phone on stage?

Combining footage from two Upper Darby, Penn., shows in 2007, Trunk Show is a decidedly different beast than Heart of Gold, and all the better for it. Whereas the first film was majestic and slick, Trunk Show is far more intimate, with a purposefully shabby look and off-the-cuff feel. Instead of long tracking shots or swooping pans of excitable audience members, Demme uses a mix of hand-held digital cameras and Super 8 film to capture Young's raw and spontaneous performance. Fans expecting a Last Waltz-like experience, complete with candid interviews, will be surprised, but not disappointed -- whenever Young is performing, it's impossible to desire anything as superficial as backstage antics. Using the "trunk show" theme, Young fills his stage with a plethora of junk yard-like props, instruments, and even a painter (Eric Johnson) who unveils a different canvas for each new song on the set list.
