With one of Lars von Trier's most tedious and provocative works, he gives us his first true epic, and one that takes place all in one room. Nymphomaniac Vol 1 is a grueling but incredibly intriguing character study, with incredibly skilled writing and great performances from the cast. This may not be von Trier's best work, but it introduces us to some of von Trier's best written and most layered characters and leaves out on a shocking cliff-hanger that left me wanting more.

One of my favorite movies after 2000. Thoughtfully made, deeply meaningful, not to mention darkly humorous and delightful to watch.

If you you view the film as some kind of twisted allegory for von Trier's career, as has been suggested by many a critic, it works and despite the film's near absurd level of extreme sexual content the whole thing is more moving and funnier than I ever expected.

Deeply troubling for someone who believes in Love. Prepare to have your thoughts and emotions played with in a sinister manner forcing you into absolute apathy.

Possibly the most boring film I have ever seen. I avoided watching it for years, figuring that it was basically a sleazy exploitation film masquerading as art. When I finally acquiesced, I discovered that I had been right.

If it was just pornography, it might've been interesting. However, Lars Von Trier insists on prudishly punishing his audience with didactic pseudo-intellectualism. You can practically hear him laughing derisively as critics praise his "art". Like the worst one-night-stand of your life, only Von Trier is allowed to receive pleasure tonight.

I loved everything about this. I know I'm in the minority, but it really think this is a masterpiece. Great film Von Trier!

The ending is pretty deflating but keep in mind this is only the first half of a very thorough character study rife with uncomfortable scenarios between the various characters. It's not a picture I would enthusiastically recommend to anyone I suppose but I couldn't turn away from it due to the brazen deep-dive into these taboo kind of subjects.

This movie was a different experience for me. It was a pure drama in a poetic way. The girl telling the story and accusing herself in every condition and the man justifying her actions. It was a like a good conversation. The rest of the conversation will be in Vol. II which I will be seeing soon. Overall, a good watch and would ask others also to try this movie.

Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), bloodied and beaten, is found prostrate in a dark alley by Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard). When she refuses an ambulance, the erudite good Samaritan takes her to his apartment, where they exchange stories about her sex addiction and his passion for fly fishing. Filled with self-hatred, Joe looks back on her life, primarily as a young woman (Stacy Martin) desperately seeking sex in order to either find pleasure or mask her pain. Other than the annoying graphics periodically thrown in that disrupt the narrative flow, Lars von Trier's beautifully shot and executed film is yet another emotional punch to the gut from the infamous Danish provocateur. Be warned – this is not for all tastes.

It's quite good, it's absolutely much more than just sex and nudes. The drama of the story is beautifully merged by the performance of the actors who play at their best.

It's porn with a better story than "step-sis is stuck in her jacket".

Sometimes I feel like watching a movie, and sometimes I feel like watching a film. If you are in the mood for a sort of "Room with a View" except with raw sexuality including some disturbing scenes, this will be right up your alley. Definitely not for the P.C. or squeamish type

A visceral and controversial depiction of sex addiction, it's provocative, explicit, darkly humorous, intelligent and thrilling movie. Its solid cast and script make it for an engaging albeit not easy watch.

Lars von Trier likes to shock. But when you're not easily shocked, there's not much left to see. And honestly, unless your entire film repertoire consists of Disney and Lifetime movies, you won't be too shocked.
