Nymphomaniac: Volume I Reviews
Joe's process of self-actualization seems contested and inspiring at the same time, and Gainsbourg is really given the screen time to shine.
| Original Score: 83/100 | Nov 23, 2023
Von Trier takes a dark, uncomfortable, and pointedly unsexy journey into the lows of her sexuality, and the result contains everything an audience expects from a von Trier film by way of strong performances, confronting subject matter, and uneven results.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Aug 15, 2022
Lars von Trier makes it easy for us to look past the nudity and explicit sex so we can accept a confident but detached young woman's emotional and physical journey as one guided and defined her addiction.

As it turns out, Nymphomaniac: Vol. 1 is delicately told with both humor and sentimentality.

'Nymphomaniac' is a provocative and visceral film that should be seen as a single piece. [Full review in Spanish]
| Original Score: 7/10 | Jun 25, 2020
Nymphomaniac has an amazingly eclectic cast of weirdos and movie stars acting weird, and their stamina goes a long way toward keeping things sweaty, grotesque, and funny for more than four NC-17-rated hours...

It is a pleasure to watch. It is a very sensual film from the first shot onward: even before the first actor is seen, Von Trier already plays with sounds and images, making a beautiful audiovisual event out of snow melting in a dark, dirty alley.

While there is nothing here as frightening as Antichrist or awe-inspiring as Melancholia, von Trier has created a film more sinister and sinuous.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 22, 2019
It's a well-written, intelligent examination of erotic pleasure.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 29, 2019
It is as if Von Trier has finally come out of the psychological woods and revisited and refined the ideas explored there with a more clear and rational mind.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Aug 7, 2019
But after all is said and done, there is a movie under all that controversy. And as it turns out, it's actually pretty good.

One of the things I love most about Nymphomaniac is its insistence on seeing sex as something that is important.

The bound-to-be-infamous Nymphomaniac epic could well be the most sexually explicit film in mainstream cinema's history.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Jun 8, 2019
It is always provocative, often clinical, rarely titillating. However, the film itself is so much more than that, that it would be unfair to rate it purely on its sexual content.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 6, 2019
I loved it. I knew before it began that I would.
| Jan 8, 2019
There's a predictability to Von Trier's licentiousness, though one has to begrudgingly acknowledge his ability to infuse each sequence with dramatic or philosophical ingenuity
| Original Score: 3/5 | Nov 24, 2018
Misogynist, misanthropic, ridiculous and sometimes painfully obvious. But it's also inventive, entertaining, sometimes hilarious, and, at one point, actually moving.

Nymphomaniac isn't as much about female power as the dialogue occasionally suggests; it's more about being misunderstood because of the things you choose (or are compelled) to pursue.
| Aug 28, 2018
The horrors of sex never make cosy viewing, just as the horrors of sex addiction never make interesting plots.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 22, 2018
This is Nordic-noir sex, enveloped in a film as complex as it is unforgettable.
