One From the Heart Reviews
There are moments of movie magic, such as Nastassja Kinski’s tightrope walk and Garr’s dance with Raul Julia, but they are brief flashes in the midst of flamboyant spectacle and dull characterization.

One From The Heart straps itself to a neon rocketship of elemental romance rather than taking a boat upriver to documentary-style madness. [It and Apocalypse Now] make a pretty pair, and Heart has things you don’t see in the jungle,

The original cut is as flawed as it is gorgeous. The Reprise edit is utterly clueless — both introducing continuity errors and clipping out context that really worked about the original version's blue-valentine vibes.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t one of those films unfairly panned more for its budget than its actual content (see: Ishtar, Waterworld, etc.) -- this one truly deserved every rotten review that came its way.

Every scene represents Francis Ford Coppola taking a creative risk.

There’s plenty to enjoy here, especially the sparkling emotional openness of Garr, who is a terrific natural dancer and seems always to be dancing, even when she isn’t.

A movie that takes a drastic and original approach to the very notion of character, to the essence of subjectivity in cinema.

…a film-out-of-time, for sure, but it’s a wonderful wallow in fading passion and impending break-ups…

It’s the sheer commitment to artificiality that makes One from the Heart an important inspiration for the modern musical, even while it stares backward.

This story being negligible, what we're asked to respond to is Coppola's confectionary artistry. The movie is very pretty and sometimes eerily charming, but the effects don't have any emotional meaning in terms of characters.

Unfortunately, in all his zeal and desire to make a new kind of picture, one of the finest filmmakers of our day neglected to come up with an interesting story about interesting people.

And yet, despite the drabness and confusion of its premise, One from the Heart is impossible to look away from.

It's attractive and fascinating but at the same time full of false notes, erroneous choices, and corniness. But it couldn't be another way in a film that has as its theme or obsession to declare its love to cinema. [Full Review in Spanish]

Coppola surrounds his lovelorn characters in a dizzying virtuoso display, but he knows what all this cinematic excitement adds up to: escape.

Perhaps next time Coppola can open his heart without losing his head.

A great big beautiful bore, ornately directed by Francis Coppola, with little charm and less meaning.

Razzle-dazzle gimmickry and photographic techniques dwarf the trivial story.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Dec 11, 2007
A hybrid musical romantic fantasy, lavishing giddy heights of visual imagination and technical brilliance onto a wafer-thin story of true love turned sour, then sweet.

A flawed film, to be sure, but one certainly ripe for reexamination some 20 years on.
