Open Range (2003) A Contemporary Classic Western (11,658 – 14 Feb 2005 / 30 Apr 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) The cowboys Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall), Charley Waite (Kevin Costner), Mose (Abraham Benrubi) and Button (Diego Luna) are conducting their cattle herd through the fields of the West. Boss and Spearman have been friends for ten years, and they have a special affection and friendship for Button, Mose and his dog Tig. Boss requests Mose to return to a small town nearby and buy some supplies for the rest of their journey. Mose never comes back, and Boss and Charley decide to check what happened to him. They find Moses beaten and arrested in the jail by the corrupt Sheriff Poole (James Russo), accused of fighting against the men of a powerful local rancher, Denton Baxter (Michael Gambon). Boss and Charley bring Mose to the local doctor, Barlow (Dean McDermott), where Charley falls in love with his sister, Sue Barlow (Annette Bening). They return to their camping; they are attacked by Baxter's men and Mose and Tig are killed and Button is seriously wounded. The two old cowboys return to the town looking for justice. "Open Range" is one of the best contemporary westerns, with the characters very well constructed and an engaging low-paced story having action, drama and romance. The performance of the cast, highlighting Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner, and the direction of Kevin Costner are magnificent. I believe in the future "Open Range" will be considered a classic in the genre. Today I watched this film again and it continues excellent. My vote is nine. By far one of my favorite westerns. Great cast, Costner's and Duvall's tremendous chemistry make it a classic. A little predictable, but so what. Gunfight scene at the end .. one of the best.

All Time Classic. The cinematography and direction of Costner is first rate across the board. The lush green plains, the framing/camerawork, shootout is all breathtaking. You can see the influence of John Ford, Tombstone, and Costners other Westerns he directed all over this. The shootout is excellent and really does a great job capturing a frantic, chaotic, and realisitic Western shootout. Defintely worth the buildup. It's a very visually heavy film. The editing and pacing overall all excellent too. It can get a little bit slow in the middle and a bit muddled with setting up the budding romance with Benning, saving the kid, and the war with the Rancher but the payoff is just first rate. Yeha the romantic ending is a bit cliche but it's so well done that if your a sucker for a happy ending it's hard not to resist. Everything else is really good. Duvall is the standout amongst an all star cast. Costner and Benning are really good actors with great presence but they don't have the best chemistry if that makes sense I feel. But it works well. The villian is really good too thanks to Michael Gambon's acting. I wish we maybe would've gotten a bit more backstory and development with the boy and Mose but it works well still. I was kind of torn between a 4.5 or a 5 here. It's really right on the fence for me as it doesn't really break any new ground or have some deep meaning. It's just a really well made first rate western and there really isn't nothing wrong with that and despite the R rating it's on the family friendly side for the most part despite the shootout but it's honestly nothing too terrible suprisingly. It is intense though at times. Everyone should give this a try once.

"Open Range" is a masterfully crafted Western that pays homage to the genre's classic roots while delivering a fresh and compelling narrative. Directed by and starring Kevin Costner, alongside the legendary Robert Duvall, the film tells the story of two free-grazing cattlemen who confront a corrupt land baron in the American frontier. Duvall's portrayal of Boss Spearman is both commanding and nuanced, embodying the steadfast principles of the Old West. Costner's Charley Waite, a man haunted by his past, provides a perfect counterbalance, showcasing a depth of character that resonates throughout the film. Annette Bening adds grace and warmth as Sue Barlow, bringing a touch of romance and humanity to the rugged landscape. The cinematography is breathtaking, capturing the vast, untamed beauty of the frontier with sweeping vistas and meticulous attention to detail. The film's pacing allows for deep character development, leading to a climactic showdown that is both intense and satisfying. "Open Range" stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of Westerns, offering a story rich in authenticity, emotion, and timeless themes of justice and redemption.

Something of a throwback western where the good guys are flawed, but honorable killers. I loved everything about it. It's a little too long or would be five stars.

Oversteps mass killing with bodies dropping left and right. Too much vengeance for so few wounds on the heroes.

Apr 19, 2024

One of the top five westerns of all time.

"Open Range" is a wild west adventure that left me feeling a little lukewarm. While I'm not the biggest fan of westerns, I decided to give this one a shot. The film had its moments, and I must admit I did enjoy the romance subplot - it added a nice touch to the otherwise predictable and thin plot. However, my patience was tested by the extremely slow pacing. This movie dragged on for what felt like an eternity, and I couldn't help but check the time a few times. A film like this could've easily been condensed into a more digestible 90-minute duration. Michael Gambon's performance as the villain was a standout, bringing some much-needed depth to the story. Despite its flaws, "Open Range" managed to keep my interest, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea. If you're a die-hard western fan, you might appreciate it more, but for me, it fell short of being a truly engaging experience.

The best Western since Unforgiven, which was the best Western in decades. Duvall gives one of his best performances, which means it was damned special. Not a masterpiece, but beautifully made, well acted, and the gun fight scenes seem the most authentic in film history. Quite a movie.

Boring and didn't even remind me of the western charisma... maybe this movie could be an Oscar winner...I wouldn't be surprised to see it there

Reawaken the Western past. Great western in the vein of Unforgiven.

An absolute old love letter to classic Western films. Kevin Costner and Robert Duval shine throughout this predictable, but enjoyable Western.

Wow, I was so looking forward to seeing this movie. The first 3/4 had a great story, photos, and relationships between a small group of cattle drovers reminiscent of the late 1800s. Then comes the cattle barren; owning the town & marshall and dominating all. The townspeople cower knowing who runs the country. Of course a shoot out is inevitable... One that makes The OK Corral look like a picnic. Rarely is a gun reloaded, yet bullets fly and all of the "bad guys" die while townspeople wander all over the street. If you follow the dialogue it is one cliché after another. What a let down 👎👎 This movie had such promise, what a let down 👎👎

Just the best cowboy movie ever made.

Jun 16, 2023

One of my favorite westerns of all time. Some of the best shooting scenes ever filmed in a western, set against a rock solid plot, with a beautiful romance, and an appropriately harsh representation of the relationships between men on the frontier. Really incredible

This is a truly smashing film. Flawless entertainment. Beautifully shot, brilliantly acted and one of those few films that you can revisit time and again and still enjoy it as much as the first time.

In Montana in 1882, "Boss" Spearman (Robert Duvall) is a seasoned open range cattleman, who, with hired hands Charley Waite (Kevin Costner), Mose (Abraham Benrubi), and Button (Diego Luna), is driving a herd cross-country. Charley is a former Union soldier who served in a "special squad" during the Civil War and feels immense guilt over his past as a killer of both enemy soldiers and civilians. Boss sends Mose to the nearby town of Harmonville for supplies. The town is controlled by ruthless Irish immigrant and rancher Denton Baxter (Michael Gambon), who hates open-rangers for using his land to feed their herds. Mose is badly beaten and jailed by the town's corrupt marshal, Poole, after defending himself in a fight with some of Baxter's men. The only Harmonville inhabitant willing to openly defy Baxter is Percy, the livery stable owner. Boss and Charley become concerned when Mose does not return. They retrieve him from the jail but not before Baxter gives them an ultimatum to leave the area before nightfall. Mose's injuries are so severe that Boss and Charley take him to the local physician, Doc Barlow. There they meet his assistant, Sue (Annette Bening). Charley is attracted immediately but assumes that Sue is the doctor's wife and chooses not to stay the night even after being invited. After catching masked riders scouting their cattle, Boss and Charley sneak up on their campsite, disarm, and humiliate them. At the same time, other riders trash their camp and shoot Mose and Charley's dog Tig dead. Button is badly injured after being shot in the chest. Charley and Boss vow to avenge their friend... Rotten Tomatoes consensus states: "Greatly benefiting from the tremendous chemistry between Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall, Open Range is a sturdy modern Western with classic roots." Roger Ebert gave it 3.5 stars out of 4, calling it "an imperfect but deeply involving and beautifully made Western". Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film 4 stars out of 5, writing, "Duvall gives his best performance in ages" in a "tough, muscular, satisfying movie". In particular, the gun fighting scenes were intentionally filmed in giant wide shots and were praised for their intense realism by a number of critics and yet were the reason the film earned an R rating. Kevin Carr of FilmThreat.com said on the gun action in Open Range: "After The Matrix redefined action in the late 1990s, every crummy action sequence tries to repeat the power of 'bullet time' often with little success. The action in Open Range is filmed real time, grabbing the audience and showing them that when this kind of stuff happens in real life, it happens faster than you think it would." A review on Moviola stated that the film has "one of the most exciting final gunfights ever filmed". "Open Range" is a fine western directed by Kevin Costner with a solid ensemble cast shot in the beautiful scenery of the Stoney Indian Reserve in Alberta, Canada and the excellent cinematography adds so much to the film making it feel like a western made in the good ol´ days. The film has a classic storyline with revenge as the main pillar, but not without emotional and moral doubts balancing out the structure. The characters are truly believable, then again it´s hard to fail with that when Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall are playing the main characters. You really care about the characters. Nice to see the lovely Annette Bening in a supporting role. There´s also a good balance between being a western, emotional engagement, repentance, love, comradery, revenge and justice. "Open Range" is engaging and very entertaining , but also amongst the best western made in later years to my mind. Trivia: The film won the 2004 Western Heritage Award, and was nominated for a Golden Satellite Award, an M온라인카지노추천 Movie Award (Diego Luna), a Motion Picture Sound Editors Award as well as a Taurus Award for stunt artist Chad Camilleri. It was #48 in TimeOut London's "The 50 greatest westerns" list.

This is a good old fashioned Western film. The plot is a little slow to build up initially and the main nuisance I found with it were the scenes featuring torrential downpours, in which a lot of dialogue is spoken, as the noise of the rainfall definitely made it harder to follow the dialogue. I thought Annette Bening gave a good performance as the main female character, Sue Barlow, while both Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner also gave good performances. There are some nice landscape shots and there's some pretty decent, sometimes thought provoking; if not insightful, dialogue (some of which is spoken away from said rainfall, I'm glad to tell you). The final 'showdown', as it were, was very good - real edge of your seat stuff. I found it quite tense and engrossing, so I enjoyed the film for the most part and so I'd recommend this film to others.
