The Opposite of Sex Reviews

Aug 4, 2024

Ricci character is obnoxious and unlikable, or whatever. The rest of the cast is great. One star for the beauty of Ivan Sergei!

Dede is 16 years old and her stepfather has died She moves in with her gay half-brother Bill to get away from her mom But she ends up seducing Bill's partner Matt Dede is also pregnant so she pretends the baby is Matt's Both of them end up stealing $100,000 in the process To make things more dicey an ex-student of Bill's and also Matt's ex accuses him of inappropriate behavior He tracks down both Dede and Matt with the help of his sister, Lucia to save face Christina Ricci, Lisa Kudrow, Johnny Galecki, and Ivan Sergei make quite a cast This is one of Ricci's spicer roles, this was a showcase for her moving into more adult areas as an actress She attempts to break the fourth wall being the snarky narrator yet she has no heart of gold This turns into a chase film and there's no denying there's quite a number of eye brow raising moments when it comes to the dialogue being so casual, some racial slurs, and stereotypes So yeah today lots of this wouldn't fly as it was pretty provocative even 25 years ago Even it's anti politically correct attitude feels jarring But director Don Roos' script is funny with lots of zingers Weirdly Ricci's character disappears through half the film Half of this is funny but so serious so the tones are a bit more conflicting Most want the opposite of sex; it can be destructive, crazy, dangerous even kill But there are pros as well as cons particularly when it comes to our emotions Ricci is really good here; it's just that the material needed to be balanced better

The best filmmaking debut ever from Don Roos!

some of the worst dialog i've seen in a long time. No wonder it killed its studio.

Superbly written & unpredictable dark comedy features Ginsu-sharp dialogue. Ricci is deliciously wicked & Donovan is stoically sure, but it’s Kudrow who gives her career-best performance - easily the film’s acting MVP. #nitrosMovieChallenge

Christina Ricci grows up in this movie, she's a long way from the Addams' Family mansion!

Christina Ricci is really great and darkly funny. The film is a blast, and gleefully amoral.

Don Rooss' first ever theatrical film. With Christina Ricci, Martin Donovan, Lisa Kudrow, Lyle Lovett, Johnny Galecki and Ivan Sergei. A satirical look at sexuality, AIDS and LGBT relationships all of which were a phenomena in the 1990s. Ricci plays Dede Truitt, a teenage girl who is the opposite of sweet sixteen, she runs away from her mother and manages to seduce her brother's boyfriend Matt (Sergei) and wreak havoc on his life. Great performances by Lisa Kudrow, Lucia is the opposite of Phoebe Buffay, Galecki is charming as Matt's grunge looking flamboyant boyfriend. A must see for anyone who lives satire and jabs at sexuality.

Fun and Funny unpolitical in correct movie. Hilarious roller coaster ride.

Time has not been particularly kind to this movie. I absolutely loved it when it came out. However, a recent revisit felt more than a bit forced and blunt. Christina Ricci's meanly sarcastic and deadpan performance is what makes this movie work.

Christina showed so much promise in this excellent movie that was way ahead of its time in relation to the whole gay thing. Lisa Kudrow is amazing.

Witty dark comedy with a terrific script! Excellent acting, which s harder in comedy than in drama. A movie worth watching--hilarious.

One of those cases where the protagonist is so pretentious and unlikable, it makes the whole experience kind of difficult to sit through.

Outrageous and blase all at once.

It was ok. Back when Christina Ricci was smoking hot. Aside from her lounging around in bathing attire I don't recall a lot of this movie. Not remembering a lot doesn't help it's case but I recall it being ok.

Watching this again on Netflix now and this is such a great 90's film. I love both Christina Ricci and Lisa Kudrow so the two of them in the same film makes it so good! Well recommended.

Kooky comedy with a lot of different characters.

Lisa Kudrow shines in this movie. Christina Ricci played the role that she always plays. A very good movie that I haven't seen in a few years.

Written and directed by Don Roos (who did the screenplays for Single White Female (1992) and Diabolique (1996)), this grew out of another film Roos was working on that was ultimately abandoned, a frustrated Roos let it all out into this angry but hilarious black comedy, which showed a couple of actors playing against type. It's good fun as well with a good plot and some hilarious dialogue. Dede Truitt (Christina Ricci) hails from Louisiana, and runs away to Indiana to live with her gay half-brother Bill (Martin Donovan), who lives with his boyfriend Matt (Ivan Sergei). Bill is grieving over his late boyfriend Tom (Colin Ferguson), and Tom's sister Lucia (Lisa Kudrow) still visits. However Dede infuriates everyone by having a sexual affair with Matt, and becoming pregnant, Bill's life is in tatters, and then Matt's ex-boyfriend Jason Bock (Johnny Galecki) turns up to cause trouble and ruin Bill's reputation as a teacher. Then Dede steals Tom's ashes, holding them to ransom, while she and Matt runaway to Canada to have their baby, but Bill finds them. It's a clever comedy which also manages to be quite touching as well. Ricci is brilliant as the tartish Dede, who wrecks havoc on her loved ones. We all have teenage angst when we're growing up, but not like this!! It's a shame Roos hasn't been able to grow on the success of this film.
