Orange County Reviews
Not gonna lie, this almost feels like a parody of cliché raunchy dudebro comedies and California surfer bro culture of the early 2000’s. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it feels like they play the most frustrating tropes of the era straight, like the forced 2nd act breakup, the main character getting shamed for being justly pissed off at everyone who caused all the conflict to start with cause “family over everything”, and the main character rejecting his great opportunity that he fought so hard to get the entire movie just cause “what he thought was special he had all along” cliché. That being said, the casting is solid and the humor was pretty decent, albeit a bit hit-or-miss. Not exactly a great movie, but certainly an entertaining time capsule of the early 2000's surfer bro and raunchy comedy cultures of the era.
I think this story can relate to us all. Everyone has had a moment in their lives that influenced who they have become. We all have friends and family in our lives that are just a bit dysfunctional. This is a story about. A young man finding who he is in a much funnier enjoyable way than anything you can read in catcher in the rye.
Funny suburbia meets the classic Chevy Chase style with plenty of twists and turns A great blockbuster rental. 🍿
Here’s a wild and crazy concept: the high school counselor calls the Stanford admissions department and says, “we sent you the wrong student’s transcript.”
A very fun and funny film!
Probably best as a time capsule to return current viewers back to their coming of age around the turn of the century
Typical teenager movie that is for the ages of 18 and under, this movie didn't have any relevant new thing or idea that we won't see in another movie about a teenager wanting to go to college! Yes, he ends up not going to college and appreciates his family which is nice, can't say it isn't but not something new or creative from this type of movie!
It had been a long time since I had seen this and unfortunately wasn't as funny as I remembered it to be, reminding me of a lot of the high school coming of age comedies coming out around this time. Decent pedigree with regard to the names in this cast and Jack Black even got some chuckles out of me. 5.5/10
A fun and funny in-and-out movie that has a great Jack Black performance, a strong supporting cast and good pacing. Yeah its about as substantive as a familiar college essay, but the pleasures comes with how easy it is to go along with.
This was very nostalgic to the late 90s early 2000s comedies I grew up on . Also was a half decent movie in itself. 3.1
It has its moments and is relatively funny.
Orange County is an okay film. It is about a guidance counselor who mistakenly sends out the wrong transcripts to Stanford University under the name of an over-achieving high schooler. Colin Hanks and Jack Black give decent performances. The script is a little slow in places. Jake Kasdan did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the humor and drama.
It is quirky, has a great sound track and has awesome comedic acting from ALL actors. It is probably the best coming of age movie I have ever seen because it shows the power of an idea to change a life but does so in a very funny way. Probably the most even playing field of acting talent I have ever seen in a comedy ever.
I went with 2 stars on this movie I have not seen this movie in a while I might see this movie again. I have seen this movie a few times I seen this movie in the movies with a friend I have not seen in forever. Kind of silly 90's teen comedy Jack Black plays the dead beat brother of a boy going to college for writing kind of funny, kinda boring it's alright.
This movie always made me wonder. If your a writer that writes a story about your life. Then what do you write about after that?
One of my favorite movies ever! Pessimistic teen, Collin Hanks, learns to embrace the crazy of his loving friends and family. This movie is held up by its hilarious supporting characters. Jack Black, Catherine O'Hara, John lithgow, Leslie Mann, Chevy Chase, and Lily Tomlin are just a few in a star studded supporting cast. Combine that with an undersold and underrated comedy, and BAMB! Cult classic.
Great cast and soundtrack. The story is quite simplistic in design and robs the film from achieving some individual style. Black is very funny in a weird supporting role. I was shocked at the talent involved here, but they must been connected to land most them in little roles. This is an okay filmin doses, but the filmmakers don't have a clear understanding of the material and it's a bit messy. Okay in the end but not a great comedy. 19/04/2019
Orange County picks up some points picking at what US domestic livestyle has devolved in to... drunk, divorced, cheating parents, druggie siblings and friends, social banality (that carries on to college) and of course, the need to get in to a good college. Hanks does a decent job playing the straight man against a mess of a movie. Much of the cast seems dumb and only partially aware of what is going on around them. Not sure what the cameos were for. Jack Black had some funny moments, but geez he should NOT be in his underwear in a movie... at least they were not obviously stained. The craziness was way over the top and WAY too conveniently timed (all stoners converge, in your underwear, on the Stanford interview). For convenience, there was some sort of moral lesson thrown in.... like how Steven Segal blows up an oil rig and then preaches about nature or native culture or something. I can't really recommend the movie, but it had a few laughs.
Is this the most underrated comedy of the 2000s? An endlessly funny, fully realized universe that subverts its subjects and setting, all while clearly loving them. Almost like they were making a satire of turn-of-the-century teen life without denying its power ("Butterfly"). It has surprisingly strong things to say about idolizing your dreams, under appreciating what you have, and realizing the love you have for the family and friends who drive you crazy. An underappreciated and ahead-of-its-time teen comedy.
