The Other Boleyn Girl Reviews

Mar 7, 2025

A regularly told tale. Here it is told well with a great cast delivering performances that are trying to keep pace given the squeezing of so much into such a relatively short time frame. Yes, it takes liberties with the original story...but how else do you retell. Certainly worth a watch.

Very good acting from both Portman and Johanssen. An overall good watch. No periodically sound but the execution was very good

Says "costume drama" on the label but comes across as a histo-exploitation thriller. Some of the actors, e.g. Rylance, Johansson and Scott-Thomas provide a modicum of quality and the set designs are uniformly excellent but it's all dragged down by some weak acting (Portman, Bana) and join-the-dots historical narrative. This has an all-star cast but few star performances.

Apparently I just appreciated a soap opera. Thank you wise ones! Seeing how many crappy movies get 3 and 4 stars, the organized attack against this film is quite intriguing. It is available on Tubi for nothing, so if you agree it’s not worth it, you just go back and watch something else. Acting, especially by Portman and Johansson is of the first order, without any elements of melodrama. Color photography and the framing are superb. Every scene looks like it originated in an oil painting from a few centuries ago. Totally enjoyable!

For someone not very familiar with history, this movie only left me with the impression that King Henry spent his days doing nothing but having sex, pregnancies, miscarriages, pregnancies, a girl, pregnancies, and stillbirths.

King Henry VIII (Eric Bana) lacks an heir. Seeing this as an opportunity for personal gain, the Duke of Norfolk (David Morrissey) and Sir Thomas Boleyn (Mark Rylance) persuade Thomas' daughter Anne (Natalie Portman) to seduce the king. But Henry falls in love with Anne's sister, Mary (Scarlett Johansson), instead. When Mary becomes pregnant, she's confined to bed, with charged with Anne keeping the king from straying -- but the plan backfires when Anne seeks the king's affections for herself.

I am very happy that the movie shows us the steps and choices that are necessary in the life of a great person. I like the movie.

This movie was disturbing 😳 and didn't seem believable.

Do not bother with this film if you enjoyed the book. The casting and acting of Henry was wildly wrong - literarily as well as historically - and even the set up to the affairs was appalling. If you want to watch a crap film about the Tudors then go for it… but if you came for a film adaptation of a wonderful book, seriously don't bother. I have just finished reading the book and I am appalled. 1.5 stars because I love Benedict Cumberbatch and the costumes were good. EDIT: have just finished it and i revoke it to half a star because even the costumes stopped being true and this whole film is ridiculous if supposedly a book adaptation. Scarlett's accent is awful and whoever cast Henry VIII should be fired.

Filme espetacular apesar de ser bem resumido. Mas muito emocionante.

Jane Seymour produced a male heir, cleaned up the mess Anne Boleyn made; yet the master manipulator is the most popular of the 6.

The subject of the film and Henry VIII's marriage has been the subject of many films and series. This movie is smooth in telling the story and it does it well.

With all of the dukes, earls, counts, viscounts, countesses and whatnot to keep track of, The Other Boleyn Girl will probably appeal primarily to fans of British royalty and all of the associated hoopla that goes along with it. In a nutshell, King Henry VIII (Eric Bana) is looking to sire a son in order to inherit the throne and sets his sights on sisters Anne (Natalie Portman) and Mary (Scarlett Johansson). The acting is pretty decent and it's undoubtedly a lovely movie to look at, thanks in large part to the attractiveness of its stars, but it takes liberties with the actual events in order to give it a distinctly soap opera-ish vibe. Bottom line? If you like royalty and soap operas, you'll probably love it. If not, stay away.

I found the movie to be very entertaining. I don't know what happened in the past history for the events that occurred but the movie itself was quite good. It did seem like a soap from the sleeping around to the remarry, I think that what ended up happening was the movie was crammed from the time jumping. Overall I enjoyed the movie a lot and would rewatch it again.

A story that focuses more on the Boleyn family rise to power than an actual love triangle that really didn't need to be made.

While the end result is fine enough, "The Other Boleyn Girl" could've been much better considering the spectacular cast and the intriguing source material. The drama portion and the acting are done very well, and the actual story, though very cliché, is still enjoyable enough to watch and keeps you interested at most parts. The props and costume design is great and really capture the time period it is set up in. The entire film, though it can be enjoyable at parts, is also very boring at others. On top of that, this film shows little historical accuracy to the actual events, and trades out much of what happened for a plot cliché. Overall, a good enough film, though it has too many problems to place it any higher than the score I've given it.

Completely mangles the historical record. And chooses as its subject a person who barely left an historical footprint. Should be categorized as historical fantasy. Akin to a soap opera as well.

If you are into historical drama it is for you. Sad what happen to the girls. Hey be a mistress daughter we might get a kickback for your brother and I. (a dignified whore)
