Our Friend Reviews

Feb 25, 2025

Mix of drama and tender moments, simple happiness and betrayal. I don't normally enjoy tearjerkers, but this one is a good one. The actors are quietly good. I recommend.

A hard look at cancer & how it affects people in different ways. A subtle, strange, & touching character dynamic. Powerfully acted, especially from Affleck. Well shot & scored. Hopeful yet melancholy & just a bummer throughout.

This movie is done so well. Honest, raw, gently taking the viewer through the journey whilst constantly reminding us of not only the family’s anguish but also that of the friend. As a result I’m totally invested in becoming The Friend when I’m needed. It’s definitely worth the watch.

Sometimes movies on real life with mundane struggles are a bit boring. Somehow they managed to create a movie that was so full of emotional ups and downs, making the viewer re-live that life. Highly relatable movie if you have ever had someone succumb to cancer in your life. The actors' work was admirable - they let the viewers fully immerse into the souls of the main characters without questioning the genuineness of any blink or gesture.

Heart-wrenching true story of love and devotion.

A beautifully well written story based on a true story that will bring you to tears

Touching, realistic and overwhelming. I don’t think the back and forth added much to an already convoluted plot. I get where the director was going, trying to stitch the pieces together in the end. However, it didn’t lead to much catharsis’ or a sense of relief, the reward in the end was as fleeting as some of the backstories. With that said, what a journey through the lives of three people. They performed it excruciatingly well. Dakota and Casey do much of the heavy lifting but it’s Jason Siegel who portrays the willing friend that ties them together that is at his career best.

Omg, this movie hurts

The movie works precisely because it isn't trying to find deeper meaning in any of this. The terminal cancer isn't some convoluted metaphor or lazy lesson for the audience, it simply is what it is and Segel's character's choice, while given the proper consideration, isn't over analyzed.

Initially I wasn't into it. Slow in some parts and messy time jumps was not effective for me. After learning the backstory of this film, I appreciated it a bit more. A writer's tribute to his wife is touching. I wish the film did it more justice.

Likes: were definitely how it followed the the story written by Mathew Teague. The emotion this film makes you feel are very strong. Dislikes:thought Dakota Johnson's acting was questionable in a few scenes

Great Film..........

I thought this film was quite touching at points but not entirely original, although its based on a true story, so its important to point that out. Casey Affleck gives a pretty decent performance as the father and its a thoughtful film to an extent - showing how he reacts to the situation he faces with his daughters. Its not one of the most memorable films about terminal illnesses, parents with such circumstances, that I've seen but its not bad either. If it sounds of interest, I'd say its worth watching but don't expect too much perhaps...

Our Friend is a well done movie with a very moving story about marriage, sacrifice, suffering, and love. Yes it really does hit on all of those. The timeline and all the jumps of everything is a little wonky to be honest and I think that will throw some people off. It jumped around a bit but that doesn't take away from what the movie is about and what it shows. Such a beautiful soundtrack, amazing acting from everyone, and a very powerful movie. It is so heart warming and heart wrenching at the same time.

I'd like to see Our Friend reorganized into a linear timeline. I'm not being hyperbolic when I say this may be the most fractured, disjointed plot I have ever followed (which isn't itself part of the plot, as in Tenet or Memento). Every other scene felt like we were going from some moment between 2005 and 2014. It became comical at one point. It's a tough subject that has been done before (terminal cancer), but here we have Dane (Jason Segel), a loyal friend who, somewhat strangely, takes up the mantel of providing in-kind support for the sick Nicole (Dakota Johnson) and her family. Segel and Casey Affleck, who plays Nicole's husband, Matthew, each have their own charming moments and both give a range throughout. I also might be a little tough on the film because it pulled a bait-and-switch on me with New Orleans, beginning the movie there, only to set the vast majority of it in Fairhope, Alabama — that being said, I didn't actually know any of it took place in NOLA when I threw it on. This was a tough one to rate. It's touching, and a borderline tear-jerker, but that comes with the subject matter. The ending is satisfying, I suppose. Our Friend didn't deserve its box-office flop, but I don't think it's something you'll fall in love with either.

An absolute gem of a film. As I was watching it, I found myself asking more and more questions about the characters and how they related to me or someone I know. The main actors are great, and it's essentially a story about loss and friendship. And just when you think you are fine, the final 10 minutes won't leave a dry eye in the house.

The Friend Honestly the first 45 minutes weren't that interesting, and more of a setup. After that, the movie was a mixture of sad and fun moments as the Dakota Johnson's character spent her last days. All the characters were solid with their emotions, especially Casey Affleck's character, who again showed such raw emotions. He was just as great as he was in Manchester by the Sea. Besides the first 45 minutes, my other problem was the character Dane. He had potential at the beginning, but then the movie didn't focus that much on him anymore, making the ending not that impactful. But overall, it's still a solid drama comedy. 8/10

The story is sad, of course, but the story-telling just lays on unrelenting layers of sad. Well done, but just too much sad.
