Outlaws and Angels Reviews

"The innocence or the darkness, which are we?" Josiah asks; Outlaws and Angels goes too heavy on the latter, to its own detriment.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jan 9, 2017

This particular revenge tale isn't an example of incompetent filmmaking, just sadly misfocused storytelling. Life in 1887 wasn't easy, but at some point, there has to be something more to say.

| Original Score: C- | Dec 31, 2016

...a vicious portrayal of The Wild West...

| Original Score: 14/20 | Oct 24, 2016

... has some evocative touches considering its shoestring budget, but little compelling drama along the way.

| Jul 30, 2016

Unfortunately Mollner isn't able to handle intimate, quiet scenes as well as he does action set pieces or special effects shots.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Jul 20, 2016

A nasty macabre cult Western.

| Original Score: C+ | Jul 18, 2016

Francesca Eastwood does her daddy proud as the gunslinging heroine of this bloody, revenge-fueled Western more reminiscent of a Tarantino splatterflick than one of Clint's classics.

Lugubrious and talky, JT Mollner's debut feature is also unrelievedly nasty and absurdly pretentious.

| Original Score: D- | Jul 15, 2016

Mollner's delivered a strong, surprising, powerfully unsettling debut.

| Jul 15, 2016

The film is formidably committed to its down-and-dirty mission to erase the myth of the West, though its bloody excesses long ago ceased to be shocking or revisionist-they're the new norm.

| Jul 15, 2016

In a sea of grimy indie Westerns, especially ones that started with the same genre canvas, "Outlaws & Angels" is a thoroughly ugly example of when "Tarantino-esque" is the most generous compliment.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Jul 15, 2016

Virtually every character has a dark side, and every victim has it coming. That gets old, too.

| Jul 14, 2016

"Outlaws and Angels" can't overcome its distractingly showy camera moves or its tendency toward scenes that drag on interminably.

| Jul 14, 2016

It seems another member of Clint Eastwood's brood is ready for stardom.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jul 14, 2016

"Outlaws and Angels" isn't perfect - Murray mumbles into his beard way too much - but Eastwood sure is at ease with a cowboy hat and revolver. Clearly, she's studied with the best.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jul 14, 2016

The main problem with Outlaws And Angels ... is that it lacks either a sense of authenticity or a streak of playfulness to give shape to its relentlessly ugly worldview.

| Original Score: C | Jul 14, 2016

It doesn't take long to realize that "Outlaws and Angels" is going to feel as long as the conquering of the west itself, with Mollner incapable of finding rhythm for this intentionally odious movie.

| Original Score: D | Jul 13, 2016

No amount of style can compensate for the aimless ugliness of the story.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 13, 2016

[Director] JT Mollner must have watched a lot of Sam Peckinpah and Quentin Tarantino...He shows off a more than passing knowledge of their love of violence and viscera. But he missed out on any of their humor, poetry and artistry in this... tedious slog.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Jul 13, 2016

A vile, nauseating and incomprehensible pile of saddles-and-spurs gibberish sane audiences will undoubtedly avoid at all costs.
