Outside In Reviews

Perfect sunday afternoon film. Had a weep. Love is love. I love the actors, how they portray so much with their eyes.

One of my favourite American Indies. So well paced. Good choice of locations. Food for the eyes.

Edie Falco should have gotten an Oscar for her performance in Outside In. She has got to be one of the best actresses out there now. Stunning subtle facial expressions, where you could see what she was thinking and reacting to. I wasn't expecting much from this film from the reviews, but I was totally blown away by the depth and incredible story and acting. I wish the direction of film would follow the lead of this brilliant movie. It seems the superficial and poorly thought out films are taking over the industry.

The performances feel so pure and real you get lost to it immediately. The tension between the characters feels unreal and gives the bittersweet and hopeful story a true meaning.

This is the type of movie I typically like, so I expected to like it and wanted to like it. But none of it worked for me. Edie Falco is an amazing actor but I thought she overacted here. I didn't find Jay Duplass nearly likeable or charming enough to have the mother, daughter, and the local hottie to be so into him. There were a few nice moments but all in all I found it contrived and stilted and unsatisfying

Very good portrayal of a man's difficulties readjusting to life after twenty years spent behind bars for a crime he did not commit. He falls in love with the volunteer woman who helped, and talked to, him while in jail, and she partly reciprocates, although she's older. Sensitive, restrained and warm portrayal of all people involved. The mood is quite sombre and at times dark; one wonders at first whether the plot is going to branch off into thriller territory with the innocent ex-con turning out to be not so innocent ... but, well, watch it.

One of the best movies I have seen to date. A powerful story of two people searching their way through a complex relationship after a long term in prison and aftermath, makes one compelling film where you are rooting for both to succeed. Truly, remarkable on all fronts...the acting, story and overall engaging feel of the characters and

This a movie of great sensibility. The acting of Edie Falco and Jay Duplass is excellent. Thank you for this gem.

My husband and I stumbled upon this on Netflix. We both found the story unique and compelling, and the acting superb. I was tremendously moved by it.

Reviewed 2.9.21  If mumblecore ever truly was a thing, then this movie proves it's most valued tenets live on.  It starts with a crafty script by two of the cornerstone filmmakers of the genre, Lynn Shelton & Jay Duplass.  (On a side note here, let me say that the film industry and fans of cinema, lost an immense amount of future quality films due to Shelton's unexpected passing. She was a true natural, with a style all her own, and that is rare.  A gem like Your Sister's Sister displays her talent well, but she was likely just getting started.  What a loss)  On the acting front, Duplass comes out from behind the camera to match acting chops with Edie Falco.  Their chemistry carries the film.  The performances are so natural and the dialogue so true, you'd be forgiven for thinking you're watching a documentary. Lord knows it isn't easy getting true indie films produced anymore, and what a shame. For it's laudable projects like these that used to be word of mouth hits. Now they die a fast death on Netflix. Do yourself a favor, check it out. It'll serve as a reminder of what it was like to hit up independent film screenings before comic book movies gobbled up Hollywood and independent theaters went the way of the dodo.

The leads are fantastic, with real chemistry despite the age gap — with a subtle yet charged finale.

Worthy watching. Imagine a movie about adults dealing with life in an emotionally mature fashion.

Not at all your typical Hollywood hype type movie. Very raw. Very real. Absolutely superbly acted. Watched with a friend at home and thoroughly enjoyed.

Quiet film, steady build, huge impact.

Riveting, intimate. Put me into the skin of the ex-con and the older woman who connects with him.

An interesting premise tied together by two powerhouse performances from Jay Duplass and Edie Falco that is beautifully scored. Big on heart, but short on words, 'Outside In' tells a story with visuals and the journey is captivating. Not a terrible date night movie that shows just how being in the wrong place at the wrong time can alter things. Hubby: 6.8/Wife: 8.0 Final Score: 7.4/10
