Palo Alto Reviews
Good acting, but a movie full of morally corrupt, unlikeable characters— every single one with no conclusion to any of the story arcs. Really depressing too.
if you get the vibe you get the vibe if you dont get the vibe you dont get the vibe. it cant be taught.
Great direction! Gia Coppola is a gifted young director, for sure. Obviously, she comes from good stock. I was impressed by many elements of the film. The acting was great, the story was very realistic, but what impressed me the most was the direction. You got the sense that Gia Coppola knew exactly what she wanted to do throughout the picture. She had a precise vision and she executed it perfectly. It was nothing flashy, she wasn't trying too hard, she just made every frame count and it all helped to tell a very interesting story. There are shades of The Virgin Suicides with Palo Alto in the sense that it's a serious teen film. I immediately got that wonderful feeling that we cinefiles get when watching real cinema. This is quite the debut for Gia Coppola. Palo Alto is a very good film. I do recommend. 90/100
As a teenager myself I loved this movie. Its such an interesting portrayal of mental health with all the characters, and how they each individually struggle with their own issues and I think its a perfect representation of high school.
I personally LOVED this movie! As a teenager myself it was nice to see a movie that was actually similar to real life instead of overdoing everything and making it extreamly unrealistic. Everyone that I know hates this movie but it just has a special place in my heart and I re-watch it atleast 1 every week <3
WATCH SOMETHING ELSE INSTEAD. No likable characters. No likable actions by any characters. Boring. No redeeming social value. You will wish you had done something else. Anything else. You have been warned.
The mostly naturalistic performances combined with the compelling coming-of-age and slice of life ingredients make for a relatively absorbing and economic feature. It appears Gia Coppola already has the strides of an auteur director.
It rlly good y'all need a reality check this changed something in me when I was 14
There was something off about this whole thing. It felt like there was a lot of wasted talent in a very mediocre story. I didn't like the unbelievable way that people acted and behaved in this. The closest thing to true life was James Franco trying to hook up with an underage girl. I frankly thought that Franco hooking up with the underage girl was the most interesting aspect of this movie(because of his real life downfall). I would not watch this again.
its art. people tend to claim its unsatisfactory or has no plot. no sh@t Sherlock that's the idea. you aren't meant to know the plot. you get what you see and that's life. it encloses this concept and truth of never really feeling satisfied or obtaining every aspect to everyones perspective, but rather overall brief insight on their lives equally showing how fu(ked up they are. like life, you never know the full story or full truth about anything, isn't that what unanswered questions mean? and plus if they had a narrative it j would've portrayed abilities of moving through unreliability.
The plot is pointless and James Franco is creepy af. Luckily my life is pointless too so this was not a total waste of time.
A meaningless film about privileged youth, made by privileged youth, starring privileged youth. I'm really glad I watched this, because now when people ask me what the most boring, pointless film in history is, I have an answer <3
Dumb movie starring James Franco and Emma Roberts. I wanted to watch this because of just the name Palo Alto. I like Palo Alto since I was there for a long time and it's just the dumb teenager things. It's a weird movie. If you're not from the Silicon Valley you won't get it. But for me I get it but I just don't care. The writing is very bland and forgettable.

I really disliked the movie. The characters were very stiff especially the dynamic between April's mother and April. Plus at times the dialogue, especially at the start seemed like the characters were trying to be too cool or edgy that made no sense with the context of the situation. Plus the ending was not satisfying and very boring.
I mean it was ok, but I just couldn't get into any of the characters and didn't really care what happened to them by the end of the movie. The film features a lot of shitty teenagers that just don't "get it." Based on a short story collection by James Franco this movie is about a group of teenagers that are seniors living in Palo Alto and going through a lot of drama. We have two friends Teddy (Jack Kilmer) and Fred (Nat Wolff) that are stoners, but Teddy is actually a decent guy who likes art, but is easily influenced by Fred. Fred is a wild dude and just does what he wants. He's definitely the kid you wouldn't want to hang out with in high school since he's trying just a bit too hard. We also follow April (Emma Roberts) who has a bit of a crush on her coach at school Mr. B (James Franco), but she's seen down by her peers for being a virgin. The movie follows Teddy and Fred going to a party where eventually Teddy bonds with April, but doesn't make a move on her since he's drank too much. Later that night Teddy and Fred get into a car accident which leads Teddy to have to be on probation for 12 months. Then basically the movie kinda of shows how Teddy realizes who he really is, Fred does more shit head stuff and April and Mr. B start a relationship that after hearing about James Franco real like this shit hit just a bit too weird for me. The movie get's really messy near the end of the film as well and while it ends ok I didn't like the characters. It was strange since this isn't a coming of age movie really as I don't feel like anyone, but Teddy actually learns a real lesson (April to a lesser extent). Fred kinda ruins the whole movie for me. The film also tries just way too hard to be indie and artsy. For most people this one's a skip.
It has some interesting stuff here and there, but none of that stuff ends up doing cohesion. Everything feels so unnatural for several moments, compilation of situations that lead to little or nothing. Meh. It was entertaining at some points. And they were brief, yes.
