Papillon Reviews

What a powerful and emotional movie!

Though I typically like both of the main actors this was one of the most unnecessary remakes I've ever seen. The 1973 original is a classic, beautifully filmed and acted. This version added nothing new and took away the majority of what that made the first one compelling. It's a great story that should not have been redone.

The 2017 remake of Papillon ambitiously revisits the legendary true story of Henri Charrière’s escape from the brutal penal colony of French Guiana. While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the 1973 classic, it delivers a compelling, visually arresting survival tale anchored by two strong performances. Charlie Hunnam takes on the role of Charrière, bringing both physical intensity and emotional depth to the character. Rami Malek, as the wealthy and enigmatic Louis Dega, adds a quiet but powerful presence, making their unlikely friendship the heart of the film. Their chemistry is convincing, even when the film occasionally drags under its weighty runtime. The cinematography is striking, capturing the suffocating heat, filth, and cruelty of the penal system with unflinching realism. The escape sequences are gripping, and the film does well in maintaining the core themes of resilience and freedom. However, compared to the original, it sometimes lacks the raw emotional impact and pacing feels inconsistent. Papillon is a respectable retelling, offering solid performances and impressive visuals, but it doesn’t fully justify its existence alongside the classic. Gritty, well-acted, but not quite essential.

Brokeback Mountain on a prison island. Rami Malek is ok, unlike the Channing Tatum-wannabe.

Papillon the book (and the follow up Banco) are two of my fave ever books. The original movie from 1973 is a 5star classic! But this version..? Meh...

As far remakes it is one of the better ones I've seen when it comes to movies. Wasted too much screen time in the beginning with the girlfriend and all that. Still nothing like the one with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffmann. This actor kind of resembles Steve McQueen., don't know who he is really. Rami Malek, I know who.he is, liked his portrayal as Louie.

Intresting story. At times one starts doubting if he was ever gonna escape.

it's pretty good, but there are certainly some flaws. the reviews regarding the lack of facial hair growth were pretty accurate, but i disagree with "bad old age makeup". personally, the biggest flaw in this film was how often a variety of characters simply stand around gawking, wasting precious seconds, or loudly dumping exposition to the viewer that doesn't feel natural in it's setting. slow pacing and the sense of deprivation and dread are big elements of the story, but we shouldn't still be seeing slow paced conversations and weirdly stunted body acting from the protagonists during their escape attempts or various schemes. with the number of lead characters that do this, i would have to blame the director instead of the actors. imo they would not have done this across the board if they weren't instructed to do so. there's often a feeling that the cast was told to look like they are sneaking and checking their surroundings, but when they did it in a realistic sense the director didn't feel that it was shoved down the audience's throat enough. the people that survive these ordeals are not the ones that take the time to ensure they are visibly being sneaky or that they look concerned enough while sneaking a glance at various things. the viewer should be able to interpret these things from context, but the director gave us no options to figure it out for ourselves and instead went for a very old-timey, stage like presentation for these sequences.

I watched both movies back to back starting with the Steve McQueen version and somehow this version just seemed too hard to absorb. The aging makeup was particularly awful. Perhaps if they'd given the role to Tom Hardy, he might have been able to salvage this movie. A poor remake of a classic. Should not have happened.

I am as big a fan of McQueen as anyone else but this film has a reality and grit lacking in the original. Definitely worth your time !

Worth the watch, especially if you know what devils island is all about. Great cast and story

Solid prison drama focused on a prison break that doesn't romanticize prison life at all, mostly because it is based on a true story.

Smells taste like in scam at a new level of false conviction drama which only needs 90m.

One of those rare movies that is better than the original. The casting is better, the setting was better, and the script is dark, realistic, and filled with emotion. An absolute triumphed of a film.

76%. 1/2/23. Super short and condensed version of the book. Omitted so many of the good parts like him living with the Indians. Also the lacking of the level of detail and description around the events like the conditions living in solitary for years or the time on the sea. Solid movie overall but excitement wasn't there like for the book

While there were more notions and interest in the book, the movie still manages to ensure and entertain into its gossip world that, not only noticed the time and whereabouts, but also summoned a picture that I imagined when I read the book__(despite the drawbacks that follow)
