Patriot Games Reviews
I liked this movie after I rewatched it and it’s more of an action thriller than I remember! Sean Bean and Harrison Ford act really well in the movie and you can really feel the fear and intensity throughout it. It is a bit old-fashioned in quite a few ways, however I can see myself really liking this movie if I saw it in theaters back in the early 1990s. The IRA is a fascinating group to study in history as well, being considered terrorists by many but also freedom fighters with a somewhat relatable cause. Nevertheless, here it is personal and all about the revenge which made me invested! Harrison Ford is truly in everything good!
Clancy's novel on the big screen with Harrison Ford...the story and film hold up well after so many years.
1st half was getting interesting but slowly dwindling later on. Not worth the time.
It was pretty good but very dated. Using the models for the boat chase scene was pretty obvious. Also one could see spraying water instead of driving rain during the chase scene as well. Harrison Ford was excellent as usual. Watch if there's nothing else on.
Decently entertaining action flick.
This continues the adventures of the perfect man, Jack Ryan. Somehow he's a hero even when accidentally getting involved in the attempted assassination of a royal in the UK.
For an action picture, it's excessively dull. Yes it cuts the dead weight out of the original novel but what remains isn't remotely engaging. It's a disappointing waste of Ford's talent, who would seem to be the perfect choice to play Jack Ryan but he just isn't given him much to do except look grumpy.
With a solid lead performance by Harrison Ford, engaging action scenes and impressive range, Patriot Games is a competent and fun follow-up to The Hunt for Red October, but also undermines some of the profound nature of that film while also lacking some focus and interest within its plot.
Is Patriot Games a great movie? Nope, it's just great entertainment.
This is one of the more solid spy flicks out there. It isn't dry like Le Carre or stupid like Bond. It plays that balance well. There is also something about 90s movies - they didn't have CGI to use as a crutch, but cinematography tech was good enough to provide something really nice to look at. I find films from the 90s to be some of the most interesting to look at. Additionally, the acting and writing was solid. The movie drags a little at the end, and honestly, I think Sean Bean lost the thread of what it meant to be a political terrorist, but he did make a great bad guy.
Awesome movie- which has aged well. This along with The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games are my favorite Harrison Ford flicks. I watch them all at least once a year.
Entertaining 2nd entry in to the Jack Ryan franchise and well made. Less geo-politics, more big action than Red October.
Over 30 years old and it’s another worthy Harrison Ford picture even if it's dour and humorless Directed by Phillip Noyce Ford stars one last time as Jack Ryan, he is deputy director of the CIA when Admiral Greer is sick An American businessman and friend of Ryan’s is murdered on a yacht, a connection is made between him and drug dealers While agent John Clark goes to Colombia to kill the kingpins Ryan himself has to get past the multiple cover-ups to find the truth even involving the President Red October made a lot of money so at the time the filmmakers were eager to make more Tom Clancy movies This was published during the Iran-contra affair Sean Bean makes for a great villain here too A slick story with a dark tone mixed with revenge Although its a shame Samuel L. Jackson doesnt get as much screentime cause he rules like 'Clear and Present Danger' the buildup is very slow but the 3rd act gets very exciting I was impressed with the action sequence involving a misty rainstorm with speeding boats This was the first film of the 90s to use satellite imaging spying on targets A lot of the politics are sanitized and there's not a lot of verisimilitude but it's not awful good stuff but not a great piece of cinema
Look, I like The Hunt for Red October as much as the next man, but I can't deny I massively preferred Patriot Games when watching it for the first time today. The action is brilliantly tense, the clear-cut villain played with ruthless aggression by Sean Bean, awesome supporting cast, the Ryan family drama is so endearingly heartfelt but what takes the cake is an enraged Harrison Ford pointing at people and delivering his signature right hooks, all makes for some poignant Dad cinema (ironic considering my mother picked this). Not gonna lie, when Ford utters "I will f**king destroy you!" to Richard Harris, I knew I'd found the best Jack Ryan.
A solid action picture with strong acting. Director Phillip Noyce's action thriller Patriot Games (1992) is exciting and heartfelt. I think Noyce brings a grimey style to Patriot Games that lets characters be wrong, rude, or violent. Jack Ryan basically causes a lot of his own grief, just for defending the royals from an IRA attack. Noyce's direction gives us tons of shootouts and deadly encounters as the rage piles on into a frenzy of violence for the finale. Writer Tom Clancy makes an intriguing political thriller with some sympathy to the Irish freedom fighters as well as the innocents lost during The Troubles. Writers W. Peter Iliff and Donald Stewart adapt Clancy with a sterling slickness of one liners, ulterior motivated characters, and ruthless villain's tactics. Harrison Ford makes for a heroic and heartfelt Jack Ryan. His smart CIA strategies and quick to fire action skills make Ryan a compelling lead. I liked how subtle Ford plays his sorrows at his family getting attacked. Anne Archer has chemistry with Harrison Ford as Cathy Ryan, who just wants her man to retire and raise their daughter alive. Patrick Bergin is striking as a determined and passionate IRA leader Kevin O'Donnell. Sean Bean is raving mad as the passionate and frenzied IRA freedom fighter Sean Miller. Thora Birch is cute and funny as Jack Ryan's precocious daughter Sally Ryan. James Fox is stuffy as the royal Lord William Holmes. Samuel L. Jackson is funny as the amiable friend Lt. Commander Robby Jackson. Polly Walker is gorgeous as the fiery redhead IRA member Annette. James Earl Jones is excellent as the suspicious CIA head Admiral James Greer. Richard Harris steals all of his scenes as IRA leader Paddy O'Neil with a fearsome dedication to his Irish people. Harris was a one of a kind actor. Editors William Hoy and Neil Travis give us 117 minutes of character drama and brutal shootouts. It feels fast paced, yet allows the dialogue room to breathe. Cinematographer Donald McAlpine has a grit and darkness to his stunning shots. The smooth panning shots are understated and bring a maturity to Patriot Games. The stunt work is crazy at times with nice sets and bloody violence. Composer James Horner's lovely film score incorporates old Irish sounding melodies for a whimsy and earnestness. Patriot Games has a unique score of pounding action themes and gentle Irish melodies from the master composer James Horner. In short, Patriot Games is a blast with fierce action and fiercer characters.
This was a good story and overall good production. Harrison Ford does a better job as Jack Ryan than Alec Baldwin, but Red October was a stronger film.
Your classic Harrison Ford action movie that leaves you thinking about who really is good and evil.
Technically a follow-up to The Hunt for Red October, though the two have very little connection beyond a title character and a touch of international flavor. Protagonist Jack Ryan has been re-cast as a much older agent: burnt out, retired from the CIA and content in his new life as an instructor at the US Naval Academy. The role has shifted from Alec Baldwin to Harrison Ford between films, and even in the early ‘90s, there was no way to paint the latter as a roguish, physical young specimen. He does get a few moments of exercise, particularly in the events that set the plot in motion, but even here, his limitations are acknowledged and played into the script. Which is awkward, as the two films are set only a few years apart, but here we are. While in the United Kingdom on a speaking engagement, Ryan finds himself caught in the middle of an IRA assassination / kidnapping attempt. Reflexively, he springs into action, killing one terrorist and wounding another. This earns him a commendation from the target (a distant member of the royal family) and a blood feud with the surviving evildoer (Sean Bean), whose younger brother ate the fatal bullet and is left laying in the street. They dance the expected dance - Bean escaping custody, Ford surviving repeated surprise attacks, a climactic showdown with family in the crosshairs - and it's all just fine. Very typical action / suspense fare for the era, with an effectively claustrophobic final confrontation in the corridors of a large country house. There's nothing glaringly bad, but also nothing exceptionally memorable, besides another example of poor Sean Bean's well-earned reputation for grisly on-screen farewells. A lukewarm potboiler that's beginning to show its age.
Another 90s action film driven by a performance from Harrison Ford, "Patriot Games" is a stereotypical action filled drama film. It involves a man trying to do the right thing in an extraordinary circumstance (being in the wrong place at the wrong time) and being attacked for doing so by a terrorist organization out for revenge. Harrison Ford plays a former CIA agent who must protect his family and friends when he foils an attempted assassination and kills one of the most volatile terrorists kid brother in the process. Sean Bean plays the merciless killer in search of the man responsible for foiling the organization's plans and killing his brother and will stop at nothing in order to extract his revenge. If you like big action and revenge type films, especially the many from the 90s then you know what you're in for.
