Patriots Day Reviews

Many Boston-area residents (and critics) felt the movie was made too soon after the event, and the fact that Tommy was a fictional composite character. I understand these complaints, as they hit close to home, but I don’t agree with them.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Jun 23, 2024

Patriots Day may tap into the emotional impetus of the intricate and complex investigation but, despite Berg's good intentions, his highly-detailed production recreates a national tragedy perhaps too soon and without enough perspective.

| Original Score: 2/4 | Apr 5, 2022

Bergs work in this film should not be ignored as he not only provides a riveting film but a respectful re-telling of the events, which concludes with interviews of the real-life victims and heroes of the event ending on a poignant note.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Feb 18, 2022

In the end, I'm glad I saw the film even though the experience brought out raw emotions, causing me to have tears in my eyes practically the whole time.

| Aug 26, 2021

The violence, especially an extended shootout on a residential street is not glamorized. It's raw and tremendously tense.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 28, 2021

We don't have to wait till tragedy strikes before we stand together as one people, it's our designed nature as humans to be compassionate and united.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Nov 20, 2020

Largely works because Berg didn't task Wahlberg with carrying the film.

| Original Score: 3.0/4.0 | Sep 19, 2020

By simply allowing the events to unfold with little to no embellishment, Berg and his team have given us both a terrific docudrama and a tribute to every brand of hero that stepped up during these unsettling and horrifying days.

This easily could have been an unfocused mess, but is instead a gripping drama that never loses its footing. In fact, it seems to gain momentum with every passing moment.

| Mar 27, 2020

Patriots Day is as flawed as it is phenomenal, an interesting experience worth checking out not just for the cinematic experience it produces, but for the conversations it can spark.

| Feb 7, 2020

Patriots Day is an intense but respectful docudrama that serves as both a love letter to the city of Boston and a timely reminder of everyday citizens' undefeatable spirit.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jan 24, 2020

Respect, dignity, and truth.

| Oct 30, 2019

Patriots Day is meant to honor the people and the city of Boston. Besides being a love letter to his hometown, Mark Wahlberg also gives us a solid performance in an exciting movie.

| Aug 5, 2019

Patriots Day is a surprisingly steady retelling of a tragic event.

| Jul 30, 2019

Patriots Day takes one of the biggest modern tragedies and plays it up as an over the top pat on the back to a fictional character instead of real people.

| Original Score: 3/10 | May 24, 2019

It works well enough, but offers few surprises.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 6, 2019

...you'll end up leaving Patriot's Day feeling buoyant after seeing how the city of Boston reacted to the bombings.

| Feb 19, 2019

Patriots Day is not without its flaws, but considering the events depicted took place not even four years ago, Berg, Wahlberg and the rest have done this story as much justice as possible.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 13, 2019

Worthy though the film is in reproducing the events, its protagonists deserved to be better served.

| Feb 13, 2019

This may not the film we need right now, but perhaps the only one we deserve.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Feb 5, 2019
