Patton Reviews

May 13, 2024

This film sets the standard for a good biopic. It takes a larger than life historical figure and focuses on the most consequential time in his life. Films that span a figures whole life feel rushed and a mile long, but an inch deep. Patton focuses only on the Five Star Generals most important ups and downs of the Second World War. Even for a movie that's almost three hours long it feels like it's an inch long, but a mile deep. A good examination of the Generals heroics and flaws. Some parts don't hold up, like the battle scenes pale in comparison to today's film. But the movie is a classic for a reason. George C. Scott gives an amazing for all time performance.

The performance by George C. Scott makes this film excellent.

A thrilling yet disturbing film that mythologizes Patton and the "noble sacrifice" of war. Scott inhabits his character so well that viewing footage of the real Patton becomes a let-down as reality is no match for the super-general Scott created. A unique viewing experience, and one you'll long remember.

George C Scott's magnificent portrayal of General Patton and Francis Ford Coppola's screenplay make for a must see movie. I never get tired of watching this brilliantly made and acted movie!

The film is mostly remembered for Scott's outstanding performance, and while I understand that, it would be unfair to not recognize the brilliant screenplay and Schaffner's direction as well. The film never loses focus and justifies it's extensive running time by seriously examining Patton's character and his actions during the war.

Gen. Patron sure is a hard ass but sometimes that's just what you need during times of war.

If anybody on God's green earth could accurately portray one of America's greatest generals of all time, George S. Patton, it's George C. Scott. Very few 20th century American made movies these days display the home-grown spirit of the proud United States military like this one does.

Simply one of the greatest war movies ever made. Great acting and excellent special effects and war scenes make this an instant classic.

Outstanding historical movie about a great American general. Great performances by George C. Scott and Karl Malden. A must see!

filme legalzinho, a cena de abertura do discurso é muito foda,as cenas de ação são boas, mas o resto do filme é regular, mas eu recomendo o filme.

after reading numerous books by soldiers who were there from both sides, i can no longer view this movie of george patton. bradley wasn't a good soldier by nearly everybody that was there and in this movie he trashes patton as a hothead imbecile. bradley was a mouthpiece of eisenhower who had political aspirations after the war. eisenhower also allowed 2 million german soldiers to starve to death and then allowed the oss/cia to murder patton. we are learning nearly everything you've been taught since WWII is made-up BS.

After watching this masterpiece again finally last night and after reviewing Patton on a couple different platforms last night, and after thinking of it a bit more today while working, I just cannot say enough good things about this film! So very many movies of today and of the past 11 years are just not worth seeing and so many movies are just pushed out as fast as possible without much thought and without much creativity like say Black Adam and yet another CGI based movie released for no reason! 52 years ago, when Patton was released, there wasn't any CGI of course and a director and his team had to be creative on special effects such as Star Wars mastered in 1977! 7 yrs after Patton was released. I appreciate such films that much more now and I just wished the rest of the world did too. Far too many people just do not know a good movie though and maybe do not even know their own backside. Movies like Patton and Saving Private Ryan and a handful of other great war films are just so very rare now, sadly! Sign of the new times though unfortunately as even movie watching has become lazy too! Many will be on their phone but still will say that they "saw" the movie! Come on, who are you kidding?!!! Ask those same people 10 questions on the movie they attended and I am willing to bet that they score only 10 to 20% max! With Patton, it is cinematography at its finest and is a very interesting movie with some great battle scenes too without ANY dumbass CGI! Loved it, 10 out of 10 all day long! Any real true movie fan can attest to this fact!

An All Time Classic. The acting by Scott is phenomenal. Over 3 hours you fall in love with his character with incredible dialogue and embrace his flaws as much as his strengths. As epic as the cinematography and phenomenal battle scenes are, Scott is what keeps this movie focused and grounded. Never does it feel bloated or over the top which is a huge achievement for a epic like this. The editing and pacing are excellent as well. This is a film everyone should give a watch once.

Great performance from Scott. The movie is cowardly and repetitive beyond belief. As Middle of the Road as possible, and therefore meaningless. Make a drinking game out of each time he says ‘Carthaginians’.

An impeccably well written film with a phenomenal and sympathetic performance from George C. Scott with great work from the rest of the cast, Patton is one of the best biopics and war films made. Scott as Patton is remarkable and captures both the unwavering and at times seemingly crazy obsession of the General and the more human side of seeking glory and the humbling experience it takes for him to achieve it. Patton is nearly three hours in length but the film is so well written and the script so brilliantly acted that the running time flies by. The film would go on to win 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Scott as Patton at the 1970 Academy Awards, Scott however refused to accept the reward as he deemed the event as corrupt and meaningless and hated the character of the man he portrayed in Patton.

George C. Scott revels in character while Francis Ford Coppola's screenplay depicts the famous and infamous stunts orchestrated by the titular character. The directing is a bit pedestrian but the strengths of this forgotten character study make it worthwhile.

It is rare that a movie is able to get five stars but Patton surely does take the cake. Here is why; George C. Scott's portrayal of General Patton was so true to the essence of the man that it is hard to find another performer who would have been able to capture the essence of who he was ( even if Patton himself did not sound so gruff in tone in real life! ). Patton also beautifully contrasts Patton the 'hero' and the 'villain' and the inevitable tension inside each of us. It also shows the reality of when ego and ambition can blend well with strategy and when it can't blend so well. The supporting cast to Scott's Patton helped to pull the strands of this movie into one beautiful tapestry. Karl Malden's performance as General Omar Bradley really helped give a counterweight to the at times insufferable pre-madonna tendencies of Patton. Karl Michael Vogler, sadly did give a forgettable performance of Erwin Rommel which did a great injustice to such a giant of combat history. This was a tremendous triumph for Francis Ford Coppola and definitely one of the best films ever to come out of American cinema, perhaps even, the best film of all time.

While very long winded, it perfectly captures the toxic masculine attitudes of this warmongering super general and some of the expertly recreated battle campaigns he was apart of. Definitely worth watching at least once, if you're into WWII stuff.
