Critics Consensus

Peggy Sue Got Married may seem just another in a line of '80s boomer nostalgia films, but none of the others have Kathleen Turner keen lead performance.

Kathleen Sachs Chicago Reader What if Jesus had thwarted crucifixion? What if Peggy Sue could go back in time and not marry her adulterous husband? The same predicament, really. Dec 27, 2022 Full Review Richard Corliss TIME Magazine This prom-night balloon of a movie floats easily above the year's other exercises in '50s nostalgia. If you dare reach for it, it will land smartly in your heart. Dec 14, 2008 Full Review Pat Graham Chicago Reader It's grave, lumbering, arrhythmic, and bloated, an emotional hogwallow of catchpenny insights and easy sentimentality. Dec 11, 2007 Full Review David Parkinson Radio Times It's not Coppola's usual territory, and he overplays the Capra card a little, but he has fashioned a thoughtful, rewarding tale - even if he doesn't use a DeLorean car to get there. Mason M This was a really quite delightful film. It was far more than just any old fun 80s comedy that any other directors would've made with this concept. Francis Ford Coppola gives this film a great amount of emotional depth in its characters, very skillful use of music, and simply stunning photography. Peggy Sue Got Married easily could've been just another film, but great writing and directing make this a very enjoyable watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/05/25 Full Review Susan R It isn’t very funny is the main problem; little good dialogue, not very interesting characters or lively scenes. Turner was in semi-agony most of the time; fainted with the horror of being queen of the reunion. Oh please. Cage was one-note stupid; sounded like his tongue got in the way of the words he was trying to push out. He was touching now and again. The concept sounded good, if familiar, but it never got fleshed out properly. - Pace is - well - leisurely. Her grandad and his club were cool, when we saw them briefly at the end. It seems Coppola doesn’t do comedy well. Peggy Sue Got Married is a pastel, which is not his metier. Lindinho... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Arrigo M i'd pick a different actress for the lead but the movie is great. it is indeed verisimilitudinous, it felt honest all throughout. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/08/24 Full Review Chris M An opportunistic Peggy finds herself back in time where she clashes with her own selfish (and horny) persona and rewrites history when she coerces 3 High School virgins with the power of her beaver. -LADIES, this one's for you; enjoy the fantasy. -GUYS, skip this one unless you want to see an emasculated Nick Cage. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/24 Full Review Mateusz C Warm but bit pointless dull story, it feels like it could have much more in it, its not like its not any fun, but could be way better Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
