Peggy Sue Got Married Reviews

It's not Coppola's usual territory, and he overplays the Capra card a little, but he has fashioned a thoughtful, rewarding tale - even if he doesn't use a DeLorean car to get there.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 1, 2025

Peggy Sue Got Married is a thoughtful and warm comedy that will only get better as you age.

| Jan 11, 2025

A Back to the Future for adults, this excellent film marks an acting threshold for Turner and a return to form for Coppola.

| Original Score: 4/4 | Jul 27, 2024

What if Jesus had thwarted crucifixion? What if Peggy Sue could go back in time and not marry her adulterous husband? The same predicament, really.

What lingers are the quieter, actorly moments...

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Apr 19, 2022

In arguably the most humanistic work of his career, Coppola forgoes the epic in favor of the personal.

| Apr 23, 2021

...an affable yet somewhat forgettable endeavor predominantly dominated by cookie-cutter elements...

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 24, 2020

Even if it falls apart a bit at the end, it is basically a well-crafted and entertaining film. But I cannot help but be distressed by the fact that... the female time-traveler is passive in and little enriched by her re-exploration of the past.

No masterpiece, but it at least imparts an important perspective about nostalgia.

| Jul 30, 2013

The film often soars into the imaginary heavens of delight but then just as quickly sputters and crash lands due to Coppola's leaden helming.

| Sep 28, 2012

This prom-night balloon of a movie floats easily above the year's other exercises in '50s nostalgia. If you dare reach for it, it will land smartly in your heart.

| Dec 14, 2008

A charming little comedy grounded in an irresistable performance from Kathleen Turner.

| Dec 14, 2008

It's grave, lumbering, arrhythmic, and bloated, an emotional hogwallow of catchpenny insights and easy sentimentality.

| Dec 11, 2007

The movie has many lovely moments and just as many dead spots, but its strengths make this atypical film from Francis Coppola a worthwhile viewing experience.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Dec 11, 2007

What makes this treatment unique is that the jokes aren't so much derivative of pop culture, but are instead found in the learned wisdom of a middle-aged woman reacting to her own teenage dilemmas.

| Dec 11, 2007

Centering on a female protag (well-played by Kathleen Turner) and dealing with a similar universal fantasy of revisiting your past, Coppola's small-town fable is a wonderful companion piece to Back to the Future, which was released a year earlier.

| Original Score: B+ | Apr 4, 2007

Coppola displays a rare light and comedic touch in this charmer.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 6, 2006

Ignore the ridiculous happy ending of this film, and you have a much more fatalistic exercise in which Coppola eschews easy laughs in favour of the exposure of feeling and the fact that these people's lives, however empty, matter to them.

Nicolas Cage lets the comedy rip. "You mean my wang?"

One of the best romantic comedies of the 80's...."Back to the Future" meets "Somewhere in Time"
