The Pelican Brief Reviews

May 11, 2025

The couple of Roberts/Washington is amazing. The story is so entertaining. One of my favorite of my long gone youth.

I started watching this passively while I was looking at my phone. It has It's moments but it's too long and a little hard to follow sometimes.

What a dud. I was waiting for something to happen in this movie... 'till the end. None of it makes much sense, this thing cannot make a choice between a non-functioning chase movie, and a non-functioning thriller.

Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts are electrifying in this slow yet superb thriller. There's something about 90s thrillers that's so comforting and entertaining, and The Pelican Brief is no exception.

Excellent adaptation of Grisham’s novel that stays true to the story line for the most part. Great performances by Roberts and Washington. Even though this one is a bit old it still shines.

Good casting. Good source material. Need more thinking movies like this.

It's a basic Grisham novel turned flick, worth a watch.

Great story with an amazing slow pace with endearing atmosphere with great performances from everyone

This is a reasonable crime thriller film, adapted from the novel by John Grisham. It looks quite dated now (it was released in 1993) and my main criticism of it is that its a bit too cheesy/sentimental at times, in a slightly eye rolling kind of a way. Julia Roberts plays the main character, Darby Shaw - her performance is ok but I did feel she played up a little to the vulnerable female type role but then if thats the script then thats the script, I suppose. It did seem a little cliche and dated but there are still, regardless, some decent action type scenes. Its fairly entertaining and the conspiracy angle of it interested me - overall its an ok film but no more than that really, so I wouldn't expressly recommend it as such, no.

The Pelican Brief has a committed leading duo, a suspenseful story, faithfulness to its source material and even some really good cinematography but the overlong runtime, a few scenes that unnecessarily drag on and characters that aren't really that interesting make it a decent but weaker John Grisham film adaptation when compared with the likes of A Time To Kill.

This is a twisty, political thriller about the assassination of two Supreme Court justices and the Tulane Law School student who figures out who had the motive to order up the killings and then becomes the target of the killers. There's lots of suspense and a great Washington D.C. setting featuring all the monuments, I just wish that I had been able to understand the exposition better since it's maddeningly complex.

I used to be a movie critic and film milieu interviewer, going to film festivals and such...Point being, I know the biz and that explains why I am surprised that this film was so disliked by the critics. "The Pelican Brief" remains one of my all-time favorite legal thrillers; I think it's taut and the timing is spot-on. I would rate it 87% fresh (it's not a perfect film). This is in my humble opinion the best film version of a Grisham novel.

Long winding political bureaucracy plus conspiracy drama, bit too blunt to my taste

The two leads aren't enough to keep viewers' attention in this overlong thriller.

Great conspiracy movie !! The audience don´t know who the badguys are.

The movie start to become interesting and intriguing until the middle of the movie when they explain what is happening. After that mark things begin to happen and you want to see where things will end. Ending is cringe inducing. Overall watchable, but not in the same league as other Journalism Dramas "Fucking PBS"

This political intrigue/legal thriller based on the Grisham novel features Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington in a plot that kicks off with the assassination of not one, but two, U.S. Supreme Justices. Pakula then spends the next two plus hours making this plot seem more and more plausible. The cast has many recognizable faces but in a tightly plotted thriller nearly everyone, aside from Roberts, are playing pretty predictable and unimaginative roles. I loved John Grisham books growing up and this numbered among my favorites. The blank VHS with the handwritten label, "Pelican Brief", peeling off was watched quite a bit as well. 7.5/10
