Perfect Blue Reviews
I had been hearing about "Perfect Blue" for years. I had seen it on countless lists of "Best Anime Films". After all these recommendations I finally watched it, and I can confirm, yeah, this film really is that good. Despite hearing so much about the film, I never heard what the movie was about. The story is a psychological thriller. It was incredibly ahead of its time as it tackles topics of fandom, celebrity and this new thing called... "the internet, that's very popular right now." The film puts the audience in the shoes of Mima, making them question what is real. The music, animation and voice acting are all awesome. In the end, I am a big fan of this film...but not like a crazy fan.
Perfect blue is a fantastic Satoshi kon movie it has amazing story Amazing animation, and amazing characters and it’s my favorite Satoshi kon movie and my rating is a 10/10
I found the plot slow and confusing at times, but overall it was an incredibly intense and surreal movie. I'd definitely recommend it for anime fans.
Mima quits out of moderately successful girl group Cham to begin a career as an actress. A stalker doesn't agree with the choice and her more mature image and starts to threaten her and the people she works with. This starts to blend with Mima's own doubts and while the bodies pile up it becomes less and less clear what is real, what is the show Mima stars in and what is in her head. This psychological thriller is an absolute classic of Japanese animated movies, up there with Akira and Studio Ghibli. It has an average score of 4.4 out of 5 on Letterboxd and I can see why. You don't have to be a typical anime-fan to like it; it works very well as just a thriller. It is has absolutely zero stupid slapstick jokes with the O-mouth faces and none of the characters is shouting all the time, so if you're like me and that is something that prevents you from liking a lot of anime, this is the movie to watch. It is also very well animated, with great action scenes, a great performance by Junko Iwao as Mima, and is a good critique of the Japanese idol system and its almost compulsory, in my opinion creepy innocent schoolgirl image. It would make a great double bill with The Substance. My only critique is that I saw the big twist coming from miles away.
This is a very unique and thought-provoking anime film. Horror anime isn’t a very common genre, but I’m starting to question why, as the interpretive animated format is perfect for this kind of psychological torment. This movie in particular tells a compelling tale full of twists and turns that will really unsettle you. The parallels that the movie draws between Mimi, her fictional counterpart, and her manager are deep and well thought-out. Each scene will have you questioning reality more and more, right along with the protagonist. I found the ending to be slightly underwhelming and require a few too many levels of digging before it feels consistent with the movie’s themes. But regardless, this film will take you on a ride and leave you thinking, so I would recommend it.
Its truly impossible to understand people who don't consider this movie a masterpiece...
a must see animated feature!
7.2 - Good thriller but a bit of a mindfuck.
Visuals were good but it's not for normal person It's disturbing movie
Have you ever come across an anime that leaves you spellbound? For me, Perfect Blue from 1997 was that anime. This cinematic masterpiece delved deep into the horror genre, taking us on a thrilling ride of suspense and terror, while also exploring the possibly complex inner world of musicians/artists and their struggles after their careers come to an end. The movie is a must-watch for anyone who loves psychological thrillers with a touch of horror.
had no idea anime could be good and for adults, took a gamble with this one and it was pretty, pretty good. highly recommended
Rarely does this kind of psychological thriller stick the landing so well. The themes are all perfectly articulated (neither too subtle nor too obvious) and the ending is both emotionally satisfying and convincing.
This was a 3,5 for me. Didn't really know how to feel. It looked really beautiful and the aestethics were on point. The plot at least for me was kinda confusing and I'm really sensitive towards sexual assault portrayed on screen but overall it was fine. It has an important and realistic message so if you like Japanese animation and are fine with sensitive themes on your screen give one this a watch!
An absolute masterpiece, RIP Satoshi Kon
Fun, creative, suspenseful! Satoshi Kon is a master animator that keeps you guessing what's happening. There's twists and turns. If you haven't seen his other works, I highly recommend Paprika and Millenium Actress TW: Sexual Assault is a big part in two scenes.
This was crazy! Totally more crazy than I thought it would be. Really good and intriguing, but confusing.
The high cost of fame: stress, loss of identity and privacy, intrusive fans. The plot was made in a realistic tone that has no qualms about showing it in a visceral and raw way. Be warned, it is for an adult audience.
I love this movie so much 😭 one of the best anime movies I ever watched if you like the old, weird anime, it's definitely a perfect movie for u
