Perrier's Bounty Reviews

Apr 6, 2025

It’s not necessarily a must see but it’s a fun movie. Ending is predictable but it moves along at a snappy pace. The acting alone makes it worth watching.

Mar 12, 2025

Feeble Irish version of In Bruges genre without charm or humour, but plus gore.

Aug 16, 2024

An absolute blast of a dark comedy that made me want again when the movie was over.

The dark comedy has a good Irish wit despite a few inconsistencies. A cast this good is worth the time to watch.

Michael McCrea (Cillian Murphy), a perpetual waster, has passed out during the afternoon. He awakes to find two thugs, Ivan (Michael McElhatton) and Orlando (Don Wycherley), staring at him. They remind him that he owes money to Darren Perrier (Brendan Gleeson), a local crime boss. The debt must be paid that night, or Ivan and Orlando will break two of Michael's bones of his own choice. After they depart, Michael goes downstairs and sees his friend Brenda (Jodie Whittaker) carrying a bouquet of flowers. She informs Michael that her boyfriend, Shamie (Pádraic Delaney), with whom she has a rocky relationship, has given her the flowers by way of apologising for his absenteeism. Michael is uninterested, and leaves the building in pursuit of a loan to pay off his debt. Michael heads to Delgado's Pool Hall, a nearby snooker bar, in search of a man known as The Mutt (Liam Cunningham), who provides loans. There, Michael's friend Clifford (Domhnall Gleeson) explains that The Mutt was recently thrown out of the bar after assaulting a man who insulted his snooker skills. Leaving the bar, Michael clashes with two clampers (Ned Dennehy and Glenn Speers), who vow to find him and clamp his car later. Michael goes home to find his father, Jim McCrea (Jim Broadbent), waiting outside. Their relationship is not good, and Michael is reluctant to talk. However, Jim reveals that he is dying of cancer and wishes to reconcile. The two go to a pub to drink, but while there, Michael learns of The Mutt's location in another pub. He abandons his father, promising to talk later. At the next pub, Michael runs into Shamie, who is making out with a girl. Michael is angry and tells Shamie he needs to show Brenda some respect and end their relationship if he wants to pursue other girls. Michael then finds The Mutt, who is drinking with his associate Dinny (Breffni McKenna). He asks The Mutt for a loan, but is refused. Giving up, Michael begins to drink at the bar only to be assaulted by an angry Shamie. Michael overpowers Shamie and demands he break up with Brenda. Storming off, he is stopped by The Mutt, who asks if Michael will join him and Dinny in a burglary. The money earned will pay off Michael's debt, but he won't get it until morning. Michael agrees, and the three head out. The burglary goes off without a hitch, and The Mutt finds pictures that prove the home owner is cheating on his wife. The trio plan to blackmail him out of €30,000. Michael is dropped off and is assured he will get his €10,000 in the morning. Back at his car, he finds his car clamped. Ivan and Orlando then return and drive their truck full speed into the clamped car. Michael flees the scene and loses them, then returns to his home in search of the pistol he keeps under his bed. However, Brenda has stolen the gun and is contemplating suicide after being dumped by Shamie. She locks Michael out of her apartment just as Ivan and Orlando enter, having predicted that he would come home. They begin to beat Michael with a bat and prepare to break his leg. Before they can do so, Orlando is shot dead by Brenda. Ivan runs away to tell Perrier. While comforting Brenda, Jim enters and, noticing the body, tells them they need to properly dispose of Orlando. The three get into Brenda's car and go to an escarpment, where they bury Orlando. Jim comments that the locale is beautiful and refers to its history, commenting that men who lived and died by the sword were buried here. Brenda's car becomes flooded and they cannot get away, so Michael and Brenda spend the night in her car, while Jim stands outside, spending the whole night awake, watching Dublin. At Perrier's hideout, he discusses Orlando's death with four other members of his crew. It is revealed to him that Ivan and Orlando were lovers. Perrier goes to comfort the grieving Ivan, telling him that he is not judgemental about his homosexual relationship and that he will be putting a €10,000 bounty on Michael and Brenda... Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus reads: "It has interesting characters and a strong cast, but Perrier's Bounty ultimately fails to do anything original with them." Donald Clarke of The Irish Times gave the film 2/5 stars.Paul Byrne of Movies.ie gave the film 2/5, judging it to be less funny than the film Intermission. Gary Goldstein of the Los Angeles Times favoured the film, describing it as "A fast-paced and enjoyable if violent diversion that revels in its quirky characters, committed performances and involving twists." Stuart Messham of Maxim wrote "Half comic tour de force and half "urban western", Perrier's Bounty is a 90-minute treat and, in case you hadn't gathered this by now, we recommend it.", awarding the film 5 out of 5 stars. "Perrier´s Bounty" is boringly slowpaced, not that funny and not really working storywise despite a pretty solid cast with the great Cillian Murphy in the lead. This is simply not "Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels"...

Between 2 and 2.5 stars. Sometimes funny, most of the time dull and lacking originality.

Another amazing movie written by Mark O'Rowe. I loved it's seemingly endless witty dialogue and amazingly talented actors(Great performances by Cillian Murphy and Jim Broadbent especially) This was a great take on a tired subject. Crime/comedies usually have a stale aftertaste and seem to all come from the same mold. I thought this film was a successful attempt of putting some silliness in what is often a drab and repetitive genre and it even succeeded in poking fun at itself. An entertaining movie that is bound to give you a good laugh. Would definitely recommend.

I liked this crime/action movie with its wry wit humor and excellent cast. I'll watch anything with Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson and Jim Broadbent in it! And they all delivered here!

Irish-british gangster film peppered with bizarre characters and deep black humor...

Feb 6, 2015

Directed by Ian Fitzgibbon (Spin the Bottle (2004) and A Film with Me in It (2008)) and written by Mark O'Rowe (Intermission (2003) and Boy A (2007)), this Irish black comedy-thriller is as black as they come, although writer O'Rowe describes the film as "cartoon naturalism". Indeed, there is a lot of violence here, but it's very over the top, sort of like what you used to get in old cartoons. It's still good. In Dublin, waster Michael McCrea (Cillian Murphy) owes money to Dublin crime lord Darren Perrier (Brendan Gleeson), and Perrier has sent two thugs Ivan (Michael McElhatton) and Orlando (Don Wycherley) to remind him of the debt he owes. With only a matter of hours to find the money, Michael does a burglary for The Mutt (Liam Cunningham), but nothing goes as planned, he ends up with his father Jim McCrea (Jim Broadbent), who is dying from cancer and wanting to reconcile with his estranged son. Plus, his neighbour Brenda (Jodie Whittaker) ends up with them after a murder goes wrong, and they end up being hunted by Perrier and his gang of thugs. It's a very silly film, but it's a got a good cast, and it is a bit hard to follow in places, as there's a lot of characters and a bit too much going on. It's almost like everything has been thrown into the pot and this is the result. But it does have some good cameos, and it touches on the subjects of mortality and avoiding death.

Excellent. where do i begin?? Like an Irish Lock Stock. Great bunch of characters make up this film. Jim Broadbent doing his own version of old man Tenenbaum. his range of expressions is incredible. I wonder if he enjoyed playing such an irresponsible father as much as i was inspired by 'his way, man'. Great sountrack by David Holmes

After watching too many slick American flicks, this was a surprise Irish caper. But surprisingly not too bad at all. Not 'the fastest funniest crime thriller you could hope to see' as described on the DVD cover ! But not too bad for a rental. Has it's moments..

Review: The storyline was quite silly and unrealistic but funny in parts. Cillian Murphy was the best suited actor for this role but he other actors put in average performances. There is much rememberable moments, but its quite entertaining and unpredictable. I liked the casting of the father (Broadbent) but the girl was pretty annoying, which I think was deliberate. In all, its just light hearted mindless fun that isn't supposed to be taken that seriously. Average! Round-Up: This film was cleverly written so that you stick with the plot to see how it panes out, but its not your everyday blockbuster and you can tell that it was done on a budget. I'm still in two minds about Cillian Murphy, who is brilliant in Nolan's films, but I'm yet to see the same quality in the lower budget movies. I'm quite a fan of Gleeson, who always puts in good performances, and Broadbent seems to have got better with age. It looks like this is the time for the older actors because the younger ones aren't really making a stamp in the movie world like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, earlier on in there careers. I recommend this movie to people who like there Irish comedy crime capers. 3/10.

While not as memorable as Irish comedy greats before it such as Intermission or Adam & Paul, Perrier's Bounty is a enjoyable affair with a strong cast in the likes of Murphy, Gleeson and Broadbent (despite a very questionable attempt at a Dublin accent).

Some great actors try and ignite a sub par script and nearly pull it off. Some entertaining moments especially from Broadbent, could have been a British classic but unfortunately just falls short.

Jul 10, 2013

It was a bit funny, but relies on the old ultraviolence for its comedy. Affa coorse. Good cast, poor plot, and a tad too harsh to really be funny. Not really worth the time spent watching it, I think.

I love these kinds of films! As a rule movies about criminals and cops and oner-liners and people pointing at each other with guns do very little for me. But there is this certain, mostly British subgenre that often manages to be so completelely clever and endearingly amusing that I absolutely love every second of a film based superficially on just the kinds of elements I usually find endlessly tedious. Thank you Guy Richie and pals, you hit a secret sweetspot I have somewhere withing my cognition. "Perrier's Bounty" is exactly the sort of flick I described above. Absolutely lovable. And it has Brendan Gleeson, an actor guaranteed to make a quirky concept like this work. And ever talented Cillian Murphy as a bonus. Silly on the surface but oh so witty and perfectly paced.
