Pope Francis -- A Man of His Word Reviews
It is, like its own subject, an embodiment of more elusive answers and ethics, but its food for thought has the lasting nutritional value of a Communion wafer.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 24, 2020
The film, like its subject, strips away the adornment and lets his words and actions speak for him.

Harmless enough, though viewers deserve something a little more thoughtful at a time when some Catholics are beginning to wonder if this pontificate will amount to more than a series of lovely gestures.

As biased as it is, it provides enough insight on a man who sees monumental tasks ahead -refugees, climate change, ever expanding poverty- and his reaction is simply to roll up his sleeves and get to work...
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 3, 2020
This cinematic-celebration of the man doesn't ask enough questions.

Pope Francis - A Man of His Word will restore your faith in benevolence.

Even if [Wenders] direction feels more competent than brilliant, he deserves credit for making sure the film progresses with no topic redundancy or unnecessary delays.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 12, 2019
Wenders offers very little scrutiny in general, leaving this documentary feeling more like an empty piece of propaganda offering nothing new.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Feb 13, 2019
Not only is there not enough storytelling in A Man of His Word, but the film is also quick to shy away from controversy.
| Original Score: 4/10 | Oct 18, 2018
Intended by Wenders to be a personal journey with the Pope, this documentary is more about what the man says that it is about who he is.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 11, 2018
In the end, Pope Francis - A Man of His Word will turn out to be an enlightening documentary for laymen... but perhaps more conventional for all those familiar with the words and the work of this revolutionary spiritual guide. [Full review in Spanish]

Nobody can get angry with the Pope and his message, but the sobering audiovisual form that this work acquires irritates even the most believing of the spectators. [Full Review in Spanish]

Wim Wenders gets close to the Pope by pontificating through discourse. [Full Review in Spanish]

Only ever remains skin deep; the filmic equivalent of reading from the prayer book and listening to the sermon, rather than interrogating and internalising the words contained within.
| Sep 24, 2018
It is foolishly unrealistic to expect Wenders to have made any kind of critical or challenging work. The issue is Wenders' inexplicable lack of interest in enriching or expanding the narrative we have come to learn of Pope Francis so far.

You do not have to be Christian, or even religious, to appreciate the man that is Pope Francis.
| Original Score: B | Aug 14, 2018
If you are in any doubt as to the impetus behind the project then look to its title. No film called A Man of his Word is going to draw much blood from the subject.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 14, 2018
It's a gentle, generous-spirited tribute to the 266th supreme pontiff that captures much of the warmth and magnetism that have allowed him to bring his message of mercy to migrants and misfits everywhere.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 13, 2018
Films such as these must show us the less-seen colours of a subject, and to this extent, Wenders succeeds.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 13, 2018
Francis emerges as a charming, gracious figure but after a while, his words all start to blend together.
