Primer Reviews
You want to challenge your intellectual self a little?, watch this. The subject has been jaw-boned to death, but this one offers an unique angle of approach. Refreshing to say the least. You will have to watch it more than once, believe me ... Stunning movie
I don't think I really understood the movie I just watched. I just found it weird and confusing as to what's going on especially near the end. Yeah I feel like this movie that probably better then this rating I just couldn't get it but it was interesting.
This is a time travel story that hasn't been done before which is saying a lot because that convention has been done to death
Two scientists accidentally discover the secret to time travel. They wanna make money. I've been looking forward to this film for years. I just kept putting it off. After viewing, I wish I'd put it off forever. I've heard many say this is the best time travel movie ever. If they mean it makes more of an attempt at scientific explanation than most, maybe. But I found it boring. It features obfuscation instead of mystery. The viewer is left attempting to fill in the gaps instead of being provided with intriguing clues. Being a low budget, there are sound and lighting issues that interfere in the experience. There are some shots that seem more at home in a found footage film. Here are my favorite timey wimey movies I think are vastly superior to Primer. Aporia Lola (2022)(and low budget but vastly superior to Primer) The Infinite Man (ditto about low budget) About Time The Navigator (1988) Slaughterhouse Five Timecrimes Time Lapse Coherence
Not for me unfortunately. After 30 minutes, I decided I had enough of this movie. There's absolutely no emotions, nothing that would make me like any of the characters and the whole story is just too complicated and moving too quickly. The movie itself feels like a high school project, probably because of the budget. If you're smart and understand time travel and mechanical engineering, give it a try, otherwise I wouldn't bother.
This is the most intricate and mind-bending time travel movie I’ve ever encountered. It demands your full attention, and you’ll likely find yourself eager to watch it again—or at least dive into a YouTube explanation—to fully grasp its complexity.
Man, you need a PhD to understand this movie. Or at least a whiteboard. I’ll admit that I looked up an explanation afterward and appreciated the film a lot more once I really got it. The story is told in an interesting way: extremely subtly and conspicuously. You’re learning a lot but it mostly feels like you’re just dropping in on random parts of conversations. But looking back, every scene is intentional and stuffed with little details that won’t make sense until the end of the film (or perhaps the start of your next viewing). I love the casualness and down-to-earth performances; they really feel like random desk jockeys working on a side project. The narration gives a feeling of inevitability to everything, ironically so by the end. For once, this is a time travel movie that actually makes sense, eventually. It’s not easy to understand, but it is consistent and self-contained, something which I really appreciate. My only major complaint (once I understood the plot) is that it feels like it ends just as it’s getting going somewhere. It’s got a short runtime to begin with, but it ends without exploring many of the doors that it’s opened. I would have preferred a bit more climax or conflict, but then it’s just over. But regardless, I really enjoyed the technical nature of this film along with its detail-driven story and simplistic directing. I’d definitely recommend it, but get your notepad ready.
There is a lot of scientific dialog in this movie. The acting I think is what hurts the movie the most. It's so robotic. No emotions. They discover time travel and dont seem to care.
The film is hard to follow not because of any clever or deep writing, but instead because the editing is utterly terrible. The characters spout technical jargon for too long without serving the plot or theme. All the dialogue is dry and dull, never giving us the slightest reason to care about any of the characters. This movie won't stir any emotions in you, it won't inspire your imagination, it won't make you reflect on life, and it won't even make you uncomfortable. Its storytelling style is woefully incompetent.
I loved this. I wish I hadn’t known it was about a time machine beforehand, as it would’ve been great to figure that out early on. You notice changes in the background, but it’s impossible to catch all the details in one viewing. The dialogue, acting and pace were good enough to keep me interested. Go into it prepared to focus, as there are no exposition dumps to make things easier. The plot and story are solid, but you’ll need to pay attention to keep up. It’s refreshing to be see a film that assumes you have a brain.
Very entertaining albeit quite complicated story telling. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but felt like a needed a tour guide. I'm also not convinced everything quite checks out, but who cares. I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't like the solutions served up too easily
Absolutely one of my favourite movies!
Mind bending, well thought out and well executed.
a little hard to follow
At first I thought it was a very ambitious and creative film, where it's incredibly small $7,000 budget created a difficult viewing experience. Later... a 20 min explanation on YouTube made me realise it was actually a brilliantly crafted, scientifically accurate depiction of time travel that I didn't understand at all...
Amazing film with a $70k budget but a billion dollar concept. Time travel is my favorite genre of sci fi & this is one of my favorite flicks. The realistic feel, with a terrifying outcome, makes the future pretty scary.
"Primer" left me scratching my head and contemplating the mysteries of the universe, but not in a good way. This film is so complicated that I needed a flowchart just to keep up with the plot. The acting was decent, I suppose, but it's hard to tell when the characters themselves are about as relatable as quantum physics. The camerawork was impressive, I'll give it that. The visuals were crisp, and the cinematography was on point. Unfortunately, the beautifully shot scenes couldn't save this movie from its convoluted storyline. As for emotional attachment, I might as well have been watching a documentary on string theory. I couldn't care less about the characters and their time-traveling escapades. This film made me feel dumb, and not in a fun, mind-bending way. If you're up for a cerebral challenge, "Primer" might be your cup of tea, but for me, it was a perplexing puzzle I couldn't wait to put down.
once you understand the movie, you just see a masterpiece
Its not perfect but it is the most complex mind bender I've seen in decades. The number of parallel timelines crossing over eachother would take a slideshow or graphic to truly comprehend. For such a budget oriented film with a not so well known cast, the overall outcome is astonishing to say the least. Very impresssed. 9.6/10.
The reviews seemed to praise this film so I gave it a go. Didn't understand a word or follow any plot. All I got out of this was two dull guys building a machine and keeping it in self storage. Something about dopplegangers but I wasn't sure what. Boring, grey and didn't make it to the end.
