Prince of Darkness Reviews
The film's pacing is deliberately slow, but at its core, Prince of Darkness is a thought-provoking movie, to say the least. It nicely blends religious beliefs and scientific theory. The existential dread that slowly takes over the church setting and infiltrates the characters’ psyches is profoundly unsettling. Without giving anything away, the final scene will both make you jump and leave you pondering what lies on the other side.
Beautifully shot and acted, but dreadfully dull in too many places.
Starts off a bit slow and a bit formulaic, but at the end of the day your left with a good memorable original horror film that you will never forget.
The dialogue is risible. I usually love 80s horror synth soundtracks but there are moments where it really doesn’t work here. Certainly not a scary film. Can’t say I cared about any of the characters. While I’m a big fan of The Thing and a few other John Carpenter films, this one has no redeeming value whatsoever. Casting the rock singer Alice Cooper as a homeless man is distracting. It was meant to build up mystery and intrigue but it’s as silly as a low budget children’s 온라인카지노추천 show.
This is for me one of John Carpenter's finest works. Honestly I don't get why some people dislike this movie. The story is great and original , the atmosphere is creepy, the effects are insanely stylish and well done. I love this movie and John Carpenter is one of my favorite directors. His movies after in the mouth of madness are definitely not good but everything before included in the mouth of madness are top notch.
Not a movie everyone is going to jive with. It can come off as either strange and boring, or as a deft experiment in mood and a slow building dread, treading in some fascinating ideas on the metaphysical and supernatural. It's really a little of both, and only works precariously if at all, but it's John Carpenter doing his thing. Worth watching more for the vibe than for a riveting story.
Legit one of the most effective low budget horrors of all time.
A great old fashioned horror starring the great Donald Pleasence.
One of my favorite horror movies. I've seen it at least five times. The future communication thing is a great idea and very scary.
Contains some of Carpenter's most potent imagery. I also like the attempt to physically contextualize evil and while the success of that attempt may be debatable I don't think the originality of the ideas can be.
1987's 'Prince of Darkness' is the second part of John Carpenter's 'Apocalypse Trilogy'. SYNOPSIS: 'A group of graduate students and scientists uncover an ancient canister in an abandoned church, but when they open the container, they inadvertently unleash a strange liquid and an evil force on all humanity.' Films like this don't really resonate well in the modern day and this is the case here. This is a very odd spin on demonic horror and you'll question everything you see. Something for nerds maybe? Who knows! Will quantum mechanics save the day? Probably not. This isn't the director's best film by a long way but he certainly knows how to instill a feeling of the worst ominous dread from the film's long and arduous intro. Pleasance does what he does best. And mainly in Carpenter's films. The rest of the cast are disposable and fodder for some fucked up deaths. It's certainly a journey with controversial ideas which surely upset anyone who's religious. Expect the unexpected. Get worse! I came for Carpenter, I stayed for the absurd. 6/10
I'm torn on how i feel about this movie. there's a half of me that really enjoyed and there's a half of me that was just meh on it. the concept is a very unique spin on demon possession and religion horror. Donald Pleasence of course knocks it out of the park and i kinda wish he was in the film more. this was my film i've seen with Victor Wong in it and he did amazing, i loved his performance. The side characters on the other hand are probably the weakest thing about the film, for a John Carpenter film this movie has terrible dialogue and most of it comes from the side character. the humor that they try to throw into here is just bad and doesn't fit the vibe of the film at all. this movie also has the problem that i've had with most John Carpenter flicks so far, there are plenty of times in this movie where i'm kinda bored and waiting for something to happen or speed up, especially in the third act. There are a lot of scenes that could have been trimmed and probably would have made the experience better. overall i thought this movie had very very good moments and also very very weak moments which is leading me to saying it's just ok. maybe it'll grow on me the more i watch it.
One of Carpenter's best horror films of the eighties, a Masterpiece of tension and Fright
Not his greatest or worst horror movie.Decent cast that at times captures true horror, and other times not so much.Still a fun watch.
this is so stupid yet so fascinating
Quite a bit of '80s cheese, but overall, I was into the imagery, which I thought was creative and also inspired later writers/directors of cult classics we weirdos love. Interesting viewing.
Otra joya indiscutible de Carpenter, la cual considero que está infravalorada, mostrando que se pueden hacer buenas películas sin costos ridículos. Una maravilla de su trilogía apocalíptica..
John Carpenter apocalyptic nightmare "Prince of Darkness" where people of faith & science find themselves trapped in fight for their lives in a nightmarish scenario facing a force beyond their control.
The imagery is striking, but the plot, which veers between ridiculous and incomprehensible, is stretched way too thin. There is a cameo from Alice Cooper though.
Look, it's not too bad a film. There are plenty worse going around. What I find amazing about John Carpenter movies is what he is able to deliver on such a small budget, and this movie is no exception. It's a neat idea behind the movie, acting is passable (you even see Alice Cooper as a ‘Street Schizo'…that's the description of the character in the credits🤣) and visual effects are adequate considering the budget. The plus is the movie is not overly long and doesn't dawdle along at a snail's pace. Pretty creepy atmosphere throughout and plenty going on after the initial set-up of the story. Probably best watched over beer and popcorn when you and your buddies are in the mood for something that won't challenge too many of your brain cells and you want to watch something with varying degrees of dagginess, campiness and creepiness…the unholy trinity of ‘ness' of the Horror genre…yeah I just made that up…
