Prince of Darkness Reviews
While the film’s heady concepts don’t ultimately amount to much in the film’s otherwise exciting conclusion, they make for an interesting journey of discovery alongside Carpenter’s somewhat forgettable cast of characters.

The pitiful villainy at play within Prince of Darkness only points to humanity’s fundamental weakness: the fragility of our mortal bodies and our inability to face that truth.

This take on demonic horror is truly a strange bit of cinema, but a welcoming addition to a long list of talented work. Come for Carpenter, stay for the weird.

[John Carpenter's] images are superb but his ideas are even more unnerving.

I love the immediate sense of ominous dread that Carpenter effectively builds from the elaborate opening credits itself, beginning with John Carpenter and Alan Howarth’s atmospheric minimalist score setting the tone of the movie.

All in all, Prince of Darkness isn't in the top echelon of Carpenter films, but it's still a taut, terrifying affair anchored by a tour de force performance from Donald Pleasence.

Expect the unexpected from Prince of Darkness.

Close to a decade's experience in horror pays off, with Carpenter working the audience with jump-scares and revolting demises like an old pro.

John Carpenter seems to be hovering between cold-eyed mechanical fear-making and horror camp.
| Oct 5, 2018
It all feels so small and inconsequential; words that definitely should not apply to a film seemingly about the End of the World.
| Oct 5, 2018
It's deeply strange, awash in good ideas and filled with scene chewing performances from the likes of Donald Pleasence that still today seem more iconic than silly.

''Prince of Darkness'' is a real tour de force, and a welcome return.

It may not be a perfect film, and that cliffhanger ending is an obvious tease. But it's highly effective nightmare fodder, with a bonus side of skin-crawling repulsion.

Carpenter cria uma atmosfera de tenso palpvel, merecendo crditos tambm pela ambio de tentar combinar o puro terror com um elemento curioso de fico cientfica.

Met on its own bonkers terms, Prince Of Darkness proves satisfying.

Still holds up as a creepy and atmospheric gem...

[Blu-ray Review] An elegantly photographed, legitimately frightening tale that does not shirk away from its controversial concepts. The high-def release of "Prince of Darkness" receives my full, unequivocal recommendation.

Carpenter's vision of collective spiritual unrest

Carpenter spends so much time turning the screws on the next scare that he completely forsakes his actors, who are already stranded with a shoddy script.
| Mar 26, 2009
Sometimes this doesn't make much sense, but it's pure Carpenter, a low-budget attempt that he controlled from conception to completion.
