Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Reviews

When so many summer blockbusters try desperately to achieve a balance between escapism and quality filmmaking, this movie’s lack of effort to be anything but standardized is insulting.

| Original Score: 1/4 | Aug 18, 2023

While it doesn't really work as a whole, the set-pieces are diverting enough along the way.

| Original Score: 2/5 | May 19, 2021

The only redeeming factor is Ben Kingsley, who seems to genuinely enjoy his terrible role.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Nov 30, 2020

Gyllenhaal is a passable action hero, though his performance occasionally borders of self-conscious.

| Original Score: 1.5/4.0 | Sep 20, 2020

A perfectly fine film, it won't win any originality awards and some of the dialogue and characters are cheesy as hell, but it harmlessly passes two hours.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 4, 2020

Get swept away in time with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. I can't remember when I've had this much FUN watching a film.

| Nov 13, 2019

Prince of Persia is a derivative, malformed mess, with a plot that's preposterous and tediously predictable.

| Sep 16, 2019

I couldn't help but think of other films such as "Pirates" and the "Indiana Jones" series, which covered the same material, and "Persia" paled in comparison.

| Original Score: C | May 9, 2019

Despite all of its messiness, the film is still kind of fun.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 18, 2019

The chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Arteton is incredible that the romantic bantering is believable.

| Mar 3, 2019

While it has a few notable flaws, the sum of its parts adds up to a lot of fun, humor, and thrilling action sequences.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Nov 4, 2018

Gyllenhaal establishes himself as a worthy cinematic action hero, shares smoldering chemistry with Arterton and plays well with the colorful cast of supporting characters.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 8, 2018

Diagnosis: insufficient mayhem.

You could pretty much call it Aladdin Goes to War and get the point. Videogame movies are usually pretty thin on plot, but Prince of Persia is one game noted for its story.

An entertaining blockbuster; exciting, visually appealing, well acted and very respectful to the games. [Full review in Spanish]

far from perfect, but it's fun to watch

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 18, 2014

"Prince of Persia" certainly has some entertainment value, but it suffers in the story department because it continually tries to fill the film with too much action.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 1, 2012

Gyllenhaal might have seemed like an odd choice to top-line an action flick, given his indie leanings and wet noodle persona, but he's surprisingly tolerable as Dastan; a parkour-obsessed oik who grows into an abs-solutely un-flabulous warrior.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Sep 28, 2012

A Jerry Bruckheimer-produced video game adaptation-it has to be good, doesn't it? (Ya, sarcasm.)

| Original Score: 2/5 | Nov 18, 2011

Someday someone is going to make a great film from a video game. Until then we have to be satisfied with being decently entertained without being hopelessly insulted. Prince of Persia manages to avoid doing either, so the wait continues.
